(S05E05) All right, all you pervs! Calm down, calm down! You've all had a chance to see the promo that FOX distributed to promote this week's show and you all gave me a keypad-full on what you thought. So, just put it back in the place where you usually have it stored and let's move ahead with the review.
So, how about that examination scene, huh? Yowsa! Now that was porn! There was so much sexual tension it was oozing out of the screen. I'm surprised I didn't hear 'Bow-chicka-chicka-bow-bow' in the background -- the usual precursor to an extended sex scene. Not, you know, like I'm familiar with that genre of film. I mean, I've never seen a porn movie in my life. Ever. Hey, don't look at me that way!
Ahem. Sorry about that. Let's...uh...let's get going with this week's review.
Take all of the porn scenes out (which the producers seemed to do since the opening was about 33 seconds less than what was seen on the promo) and this was a good episode that focused on Thirteen. Dr. Hadley has been an enigma since she appeared last season, and viewers have gotten very little information about her other than the fact that she has a life-ending disease. What we got this episode is a dark, inside look at what Thirteen's life has become.
Not good, apparently. After she was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, and after a most recent test showed that the disease was progressing faster, she has decided to go for the downward spiral of destruction. Part of it is her belief that she doesn't have much time left on the planet, but another part is that she is extremely lonely. There is no one she can lean on, no one she can express her feelings to. Even when someone tries to give her a helping hand, like Foreman did, she rejects it. Just like we saw at the end of the episode.
Even House saw trouble with Thirteen and fired her halfway through the show. This was a shocker coming from House. Not because it wasn't justified -- she left during the patient's surgery, never made it to the differential and was found self-medicating herself -- but because of the way he acted towards her. It's rare that viewers see the 'normal' version of House come out on the screen. Yet, he was there as he fired her and pretty much ignored her until she showed some sense of feeling for the patient as well as the diagnosis.
On the lighter side of House we had the return of Wilson to Princeton-Plainsboro. On the surface things are back to normal between House and his best friend; yet, there are things Wilson seems to be hiding. That's why Greg has him followed by his replacement friend Lucas. Frankly, Lucas was under-used this episode as opposed to his previous appearances. In the other episodes he seemed to have more of a presence, an influence, on House. Now that Wilson is back I wonder if House will discard him. Then again, Lucas is so much like House (so they say) that they may continue to remain friends.
Boy, did Wilson pull a few fast ones on House this week. Not only did he make House believe that he was dating a prostitute (even invoking Amber's name when he did it) but he was also "this close" to making him believe he was doing drugs. Oh, and there was the secret Wilson was able to keep throughout the entire episode: Cuddy is adopting a baby (a subject that will play prominently in next episode). As House doesn't seem to like change all that much his response to the adoption and the Wilson dating a prostitute was muted yet disappointed. As he said both times, 'If you're happy, then I'm...'.
Quick mention about this week's case. Neither the patient nor the medical mystery were that interesting. It just seemed like it was placeholder for a look into Thirteen's head and her 'sort of' redemption. If anything, we did learn a new medical term this week -- LAM. This stands for lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Don't ask me how to pronounce it...I'm just a TV reviewer.
Next week on House it looks like the focus shifts to Taub and the aforementioned Cuddy adoption.

As a fan I have a hard time finding fault in "House", the series not the character. Yet once again we get House firing a character only to revoke the firing. I'm a little tired of House threatening to fire people and then not fire them. Not that I want 13 to be fired because Olivia Wilde is one of the best parts of House, and I think the producers know it. They want to give her more to do, but this death sentance they have hanging over her head comes with a timetable it would seem.

FOX really went for the ratings stunt this week! House is a series that rarely shows any kissing much less hot and heavy sex scenes, hetero or otherwise.
Thirteen is one of my favorite characters and it was nice to see an episode that focused on her. She is entitled to try to live life to the fullest for the remaining time she has. The problem is that the most important things in life aren't drugs/partying/stranger sex but family and friends. She is indeed lonely. I have to wonder if she holds people at arms length so as to spare them the sorrow of watching her wither away and die.
The medical mystery this week was stupid. Sjorgen's Syndrome rarely (if ever) causes life-threatening complications. Lupus (yeah, I know this is a running gag) would have been a more believable autoimmune diagnosis. Yet again, poor job by the medical consult for the series.

13 is one of the most boring characters on TV. I am sick and tied of her being shoved down my throat by the shows writers. She is even starting to get more scene time than House himself. Heck House showed more emotion in one look in the baby store scene, than 13 did the whole episode. I was really happy he fired her, but mad as hell he took her back.

"House" seems to progress with each episode expanding characters and story lines. Lucky Thirteen did not dissappoint. Hugh Laurie is wonderful and creative as ever.

I don't think House's reaction to the adoption had to do with him not liking change... I think he was hurt that Cuddy shared something with Wilson that he wasn't included in, and deep down, he cares for Cuddy and maybe saw himself in that moment with her - one way or another.

I wasn't sure that the writers were making the most of House and Wilson's fight by not exploring their relationship in depth even nearing the level promised by last season's finale. The trade-off is getting them back together, which means we get some really hilarious stuff like Wilson's prank on House, which was great fun. Still...
Can we get off this Taub/Thirteen/Foreman kick? If anything, we want to see Kutner/Cameron/Chase! If the former characters are getting all of this screen time because they're about to leave the show, then that's fine, but we have been given only one line in about two seasons that refers to Chase and Cameron's relationship and whether or not it's ongoing.
