(S34E05) First of all: It felt like Josh Brolin wasn't really hosting the show, but just kind of hanging out until Mark Wahlberg and Sarah Palin got their business done. He did a fair job with what he was given, though. Secondly: Fartface. Why? Why would they do that? I'm glad NBC.com didn't post that video, because it was so bafflingly bad that everyone that was in the room with me, watching the episode, was reeling from the effects. Please note that I am someone who still laughs at "duty," so a sketch revolving around the word "fartface" should have killed me. Instead, it just left me a little confused and wondering what stuff ends up on the SNL writing room floor. Anyway, this was a big episode, so here are some video highlights:
Cold Open: There was a whole lot going on in this sketch. Tina Fey, Sarah Palin, Alec Baldwin, and, my favorite part, Mark Wahlberg. I read about his reaction to Andy Samberg's impression of him in the Anne Hathaway episode, and immediately cracked up when he furiously showed up during the open. I really wish they had done something similar for Palin. Palin got to show she's a good sport by sitting there and taking the jokes instead of actually making them. Don't get me wrong, I think she did a fantastic job with what she was given and didn't look like an idiot up there, but they could have let her do something smarter rather than giving the best lines to everyone else around her.Engagement Surprise: Aww, gosh. I absolutely loved this character from the Christopher Walken episode, but it wasn't different enough to make me, uh, re-love it, I guess. At least we learned that smashing through windows is funnier than smashing through paper screens.
Mark Wahlberg Backstage: This was beautiful. Simple in execution, but Wahlberg got the chance to look like the good guy. Wonderfully done. Say hi to your mother for me.
MacGruber: What a wonderful choice of wig for Josh Brolin. This week's MacGruber sketches were better than usual, not including the ping-pong jokes.
Weekend Update: Tim Calhoun! It's been quite a while since we've seen him and, I"m not gonna lie, I kind of missed him. He's pathetic enough to make even the corniest jokes wonderful. Jean K. Jean has been absent as well. I like him as well, but I often wonder if it's because A) I had to put up with over three years of French in high school and B) I grew up watching Kenan Thompson's Pierre Escargot from All That. As for Palin's appearance, I felt the same way about the Cold Open. Instead of doing anything, she showed that she's a good sport by sitting there and taking the jokes. It's definitely the safer way out, but if she had taken a little more risk, man, she'd get some major cred. Also, I was worried that Amy Poehler was going to go into labor, she was rocking so hard. That rap was spectacular.

Tim Calhoun is my favorite SNL recurring character ever, in conclusion and in summary it was nice to see him last night. Was it just me or did Darrell Hammond literally get just 2 seconds of screen time the entire show during the very unfunny NARC school sketch?

It would have been pure gold if Palin had done the rap herself.

I think all candidate's are too scared to do anything and mess up their image...but if she had done that it would have been one of the only things in the news.

You're going to vote for Palin because she can boogey??? That "talent" should really serve the country well.

Thank you Andrew,
Here is the answer key:
First two sentences: Not sarcastic
Last two sentences: Sarcastic as f*#$
But seriously, I don't blame you for not picking it up...the internet does not lend itself to writing sarcastically sometimes...

I think it was great how Mark Whalberg set up the whole I hate Adam all week on all the talk shows. I really thought he was angry and a douche. To show up on the show was pretty cool and hilarious

"Duty"? You laugh at sketches about the military, or people on fire and police duty? Don't you mean "doody"???

No, I'm just tired of the carelessness of the postings - spelling errors, bad grammar, etc. - which seems to be the norm around here lately.

It's obvious that the poster meant "duty" (which sounds like doodie, which is why it's FUNNY). Why would anyone laugh at the actual word "doodie?" You laugh when someone says "DUTY" Like, "I did my duty" (*snicker*). It's called a PUN. Idiot.
Get over yourself and you inability to grasp why puns are humorous to people (or what a pun is in general).

I agree with the fact that the musical guest didn't even warrant a mention. I had no idea who she was they said her name at the top of the show, I had no idea who she was when I saw her, and I still didn't know who she was after singing her two songs I had never heard before and never care to hear again. I went a did a Google search for her and apparently she's part of the current "British invasion" and the next Amy Winehouse except without the drugs. Well, without the drugs but from the look of her she seems to have eaten all of the food Amy left behind.

What an incredibly astute statement of your musical taste. You should definitely write someone off musically because they're heavy. No one over 130 lbs ever produces good music anyway. You should probably just write off that fat "Aretha" person or whatever her name is.

My theory is that the writers have some kind of bet going on how many times they could work a certain word into a skit.
"Five bucks each time 'Fartface' is said? Hot damn, I'm gonna write me a new iPhone!"
And what the hell was up with that sketch at the end with the piano bar in the lower east side?
