(S05E03) You know, I hammered The Office pretty hard last year about its use of Michael. I was worried that Michael Scott was going the way of late-period Homer Simpson: from buffoonish but believable head bee guy, to too-stupid-to-function lesser bee guy. This season seems to be committed to undoing last year's damage. The Michael/Holly storyline has been sweet, surprising, and funny. Further, it's allowed for Michael's character to have some breathing room; giving him his "own" Pam seems to have freed the writers from making Michael so ridiculous that you feel he's less like a mid-manager from Scranton as much as he is a well-meaning sprite from the dimension Ergo.
Now, let's just hope that they don't ruin all that progress by giving Dwight something unbelievable to do like spending the episode destroying a $1200 stroller. Oh, wait...
Tonight's episode was surprisingly strong. I say "surprisingly" because it was yet another episode with Pam doing the fourth-season Three's Company Chrissy Snow routine and only appearing for a few minutes each week via phone. I always assumed that the heart of the show was Jim and Pam (PB&J and all that), and that Michael was the comedy. Tonight's episode showed that Michael could be both.
When crazed whackadoodle Jan showed up and Michael reverted back to the beaten little man we remember from the "Dinner Party" episode, I figured it was going to be another par-for-the course water-treader. We all knew what was going to happen, right? Things like Jan doing something...
1. ..incredibly hurtful (like have the baby and not tell him). Check.
2. ..selfish (like stick the baby with Michael and go take a nap). Check.
3. ..off kilter and weird (like singing "Son of a Preacher Man" at her baby shower). Check.
4. ...jealous and controlling (like telling Michael not to date Holly). Check and double check.
Except that just when we were all ready to give this episode a B- for a solid but nothing special effort, Michael has a Jerry Maguire level epiphany, reverses course from what we expect him to do, and in sixty short seconds every person in America (who doesn't watch CSI or like baseball) is doing an internal "awwww..."
Michael and Holly's long hug was a great moment, organically built on what's come before. Watching a moment like that on TV -- so funny, true-to-life, and touching -- is like eating a Peanut Butter Cup Perfection from Cold Stone Creamery: you feel lucky that you live in a world where something like this exists, and for a brief second all is right with the universe.
Is it wrong to call a solid B- that gets wrapped in one single moment of awesomeness a stellar episode? Probably, but I'm going to anyway.
Other Stuff:
-- Sorry if I made too much of the Dwight thing in my before-the-jump tease. It really wasn't all that bad, just a bit much from him. I don't think the episode needed it. Dwight's a wacky guy, but I don't think he's a "destroy somebody else's property because $1200 seems too expensive for a stroller" wacky.
-- Ass-turd.
-- Man did they ever save a great moment for the end stinger. Pam and Jim calling each other and leaving messages at the same time was a beautifully crafted little piece that showed how hard it is for them to be apart while reminding us how much they belong together. A big screen romantic comedy would use something like this as a centerpiece, The Office uses it as a throwaway. Wowsa.
-- At the same time, though, is anybody else worried that we're headed down the road of more Jim and Pam angst? Yeah, me too. Here, Office writers, let my good friend Zack Mayo from An Officer and a Gentleman express my feelings about a long plotline with Pam and Jim growing apart: "DON'T YOU DO IT! DON'T!" Thanks Zack.
-- "...and that makes Michael... delusional."
-- My wife today expressed how sad she was Angela is cheating on Andy. I gotta admit, the two of them looked an awful like a cute couple when they were dressing up little Ass-turd in the horn of plenty. I mean, I want Dwight to get some (God knows he needs it), but I really like Andy. Where do you guys stand on this?
-- And, uh, yes, I know that I spent a lot of this review complimenting a comedy for its romantic moments. Maybe I have a pituitary disorder, but I love those elements of The Office. I can understand other people not enjoying them, however. Where do you guys stand on it? Too much? Just the right amount? Or do you want it to go full-on General Hospital?
As always, explain to me why I shouldn't be head of the Party Planning Committee in the comments.

Astird works on so many levels: Not only does it sound like "Ass-turd," like you mentioned, but it's also one letter away from "Bastard."

I could be wrong, but the impression I got from Jan's last scene was that knowing how Michael would react to that sort of ultimatum, she pushed him into dating Holly, since it was obvious they were interested in each other. Maybe I am very off on this, since the rest of the episode was nutso-Jan, but that moment seemed peculiar enough to be intentional.

I thought so too! Jan saw the opportunity to get Michael to move on, and stop pretending he's Astrid's father.

I'm not worried about more Pam & Jim separation storyline, so much as I'm worried if they're going to show one of them leaving *cough*Pam* the other for bigger and better things.
Also, I was wary about Holly at first, but so far it seems like the writers are taking their time with her, but in a good way. A female Michael, but smarter. Aww....
Also, Andy may not be a terrible guy, but I think his desperation shows a bit too much by settling with Angela for this long. Angela's not without fault, but still. Maybe there's another trip to "Management School" in his future, if this turns out how I think it will...

A new mother giving the baby to anyone in order to take a nap isn't selfish, it should be required.

I considered that -- especially since my wife and I had a kid last year and certainly she deserved all the sleep she could get. But I couldn't help shake the feeling that the way she just handed the baby to Michael and then slept on the couch... during the business day... just felt selfish and un-motherly to me.
Did anyone else feel that way? Or was I being insensitive?

Gestating and birthing are both seriously physically demanding and exhausting things. When I had each of my kids, I was so tired I felt like I'd been sleep deprived for months. But then the baby won't sleep (which is natural, they are tiny with tiny stomachs and need to eat a lot and need lots of love, etc), and so you aren't sleeping post partum which means you will crash at any given moment.
In regards to the unmotherly - no way. She needs her sleep. I can't stress enough how freaking tired one could be after all that.. but to do it with Michael was selfish because all of her interactions with him (except for when she stopped him from hopping th train) have been selfish.
If Michael had been someone she had any kind of positive relationship, or had he been her mate still, then fine... it would have been completely legitimate

Sure, a new mother deserves some time away and to rest. No one disputes how much hard work she has done. But Jan asking Michael for help when she does not trust him to father a child, be a part of the delivery, or even hold the child is unfair. If she wants help, then she has to let him in.

The reason I thought it was a selfish move on Jan's part was because of how, earlier in the episode, she forced Michael to hold the entire stroller, and was very protective from everyone. Later she just sort of stops caring... I think it was WRITTEN as a typical "Jan" move...
Try not to read too much into it. Just take it as the Jan joke it was.

how bout that "Baby Daddy" conversation with Darryl in the warehouse. Proving yet again that Darryl could easily head a spinoff.

What a weak and entirely too long opening! This episode was just all over the place. Dwight going off doing his own thing, Michael down in the warehouse out of nowhere, the singing... the only thing that I enjoyed was the ending. 2/3 this season for me... even still I'm not really expecting much this season with PB&J apart so much. I was thinking about picking up the 1-4 pack at BB today (since the ex took my previous copies!) but I may just find a season 1-3 and remember only the good times.

Jay I thought the Dwight stuff was pretty ridiculous too.
I'm not going to argue with your self-diagnosed endocrine problems but I generally enjoy the romantic moments of the show. There have been times when it wasn't done well or was stretched too much or whatever, but when they're done well (on this show) they're done very well. Your description of Michael and Holly's hug and Jim and Pam's voicemail is spot on and a perfect example, I think, of when the show pulls at one's heart strings (or causes aberrant release of hormones in some people?)

I thought it was a great episode! The Dwight thing was definately over the top, but not enough to ruin the episode. Plus Dwight almost made up for his ridiculous behaviour with his comments along the way ("Don't hit the fence", "Play time is over".) It was almost like he actually believed he was just putting it through the kind of tests that any good stroller should be able to survive.

Regarding Dwights behavior you hit the nail on the head. He has always done really weird stuff, how is this any more unbelievable than him sitting in the kids room watching him sleep at David Wallace's party?

I want to second the comment about Jan's ultimatum to Michael about Holly. I left that scene thinking "she knows he'll go out with her," and I think that's what Jan was wanting? Jan is so crazy though, it's hard to tell...

Loved the Holly/Michael moment in the end...the tears in her eyes just made it that much better.
Anyone else grossed out with Stanley rubbing his 'sore' nipples or Creed wrapping his foot...ewww....and Jim's reaction to that by turning around just made me laugh.
New mother or not...you don't go to a former job and crawl up on the couch and go to sleep so no, Jay, not being insensitive.
