This isn't going to be the most earth-shattering news of the day, considering it's the most buzzed about show on television and just won Emmys for Best Writing and Best Drama. But it's good news for Mad Men fans: the series is THIS close to being picked up for a third season.
The Hollywood Reporter says that AMC has told Lionsgate that they want to renew the show for a third season, though the terms of the renewal depend on what deal they make with creator/producer/writer Matthew Weiner.
This gets me thinking that as the seasons go by on the show, the closer they're getting to the 1970s. I don't know how I feel about that. It's certainly going to be interesting to see the cultural, music, and fashion changes from the early 60s to the late 60s/early 70s, but those aren't going to be nice changes. The first season of the show was set in 1960, then the second season jumped 14 months to 1962. If the show continues this trend in the third season, then we'll be in 1964-65 in the third season (though I wonder if they'll want to do a season in 1963 to include the death of JFK).
One of the reasons I love this show is because I have a real affection for the style, attitude, culture, architecture, even the fonts of the 50s and the early to mid-60s. I don't feel that way about the 70s, so it's going to be tricky for some fans to get used to that. I wonder if even the most hardcore fans of the show will want to see it end before we hit the 70s, as Weiner has hinted at in the past?
The season finale of Mad Men airs on October 26. Jon Hamm (Don Draper) will host Saturday Night Live the night before.

I'm all for it. Matthew said he would like to do five seasons and end in late 1969, so we can see the whole decade. I just don't know how they would top these past two seasons or if Don would still be in advertising by then. Hate to see Matthew leave.

Ending the show in 1969 will give Pete Campbell a chance to move from Sterling Cooper to the Nixon White House. Seems inevitable, doesn't it?

If AMC were smart they would go ahead and renew the show for the last 3 years and lock all the actors in now before the price keeps going up. I'm just waiting for them to pull a Gandolfini and hold out for some crazy money and ruin it. I'm really hoping they show the moon landing on the final season like they did with other historic events. And the Kennedy assassination next year would be cool too.

Perhaps between elitist critics and only elitist critics. Everyone else is talking about everything but Mad Men.
