This isn't going to be the most earth-shattering news of the day, considering it's the most buzzed about show on television and just won Emmys for Best Writing and Best Drama. But it's good news for Mad Men fans: the series is THIS close to being picked up for a third season.

The Hollywood Reporter says that AMC has told Lionsgate that they want to renew the show for a third season, though the terms of the renewal depend on what deal they make with creator/producer/writer Matthew Weiner.

This gets me thinking that as the seasons go by on the show, the closer they're getting to the 1970s. I don't know how I feel about that. It's certainly going to be interesting to see the cultural, music, and fashion changes from the early 60s to the late 60s/early 70s, but those aren't going to be nice changes. The first season of the show was set in 1960, then the second season jumped 14 months to 1962. If the show continues this trend in the third season, then we'll be in 1964-65 in the third season (though I wonder if they'll want to do a season in 1963 to include the death of JFK).

One of the reasons I love this show is because I have a real affection for the style, attitude, culture, architecture, even the fonts of the 50s and the early to mid-60s. I don't feel that way about the 70s, so it's going to be tricky for some fans to get used to that. I wonder if even the most hardcore fans of the show will want to see it end before we hit the 70s, as Weiner has hinted at in the past?

The season finale of Mad Men airs on October 26. Jon Hamm (Don Draper) will host Saturday Night Live the night before.
