(S03E05) "Suresh. Yeah, he's harmless." Nathan telling Tracy that maybe Mohinder can help them.
Ah, the irony. Those who were harmless are suddenly finding themselves much more dangerous. In fact, the three sweetest characters from past seasons, Peter, Mohinder and Claire, are suddenly three of the darkest characters as tonight's episode began. Especially if you factor in their future incarnations. A lot of critics are decrying the meandering plotlines and again overcrowded cast of this show, but I have to say that by the end of this episode, even those naysayers should be on board this train.
The reveal at the end brought together so many elements from the past and really paved an exciting future for us. I was always intrigued by the promise of more attention spent on the first generation of heroes, including Ma Petrelli and Pa Parkman, Linderman and the rest of the "old folks." It looks like we're going to finally see some of that promise come to light and I think it's going to really add something to the mythology being established here.
Linderman
Looks like there's more to the return of Linderman than just Nathan being crazy. Sure, he's still appearing to Nathan and annoying the hell out of him, but now he's appearing to Daphne, too. And it's established that again no one but her can see him. It does make me wonder how the files got there as it appeared they were in a waiting room.
Linderman told her he's looking at a "new world order" in which people with abilities are afforded a much more important position in society. He wants her to recruit a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He's like the X-Men's Magneto. In the files she looked at we saw Knox (fear-based guy) and Suresh.
Mohinder & Maya
"I don't need your drugs. I need you." What happened to Mohinder Suresh? Now he's killing people? I mean, sure that guy might not be dead but he certainly drug his bleeding body across his lab. And then Maya showed up showing him a picture of the abusive husband he stopped last week. Apparently Mohinder is abducting people now and wrapping them up for later, the way spiders do. And he was such a nice boy, too.
Later, Maya learned that it's really difficult to hide from someone who knows your ability when you can't control it. As soon as she started killing Mohinder and his victims with black-eyed love he knew she was there. But then she let him talk her out of killing him so he could attack her. Idiot. She might as well run through the woods in her underwear with him chasing her and then trip over a branch on the ground.
Peter
Peter's transformation to the dark side is nearly complete as he almost Sylar'd his own mother. As for Sylar himself, Claire's ability helped him to unsnap his own neck. This whole idea of Sylar acting like the hero and Peter succumbing so easily to the "hunger," to the point he'd just snap Sylar's neck and kill his own mother so nonchalantly. This guy has been the emotional center of the series and suddenly he's gone completely insane.
Claire
The new dynamic duo decide they need to track down and save Claire. Meanwhile, Claire is off to defeat one of the escapees, Stephen. And she proves about as unprepared and incompetent as you would expect. He's a guy who makes black holes and turns out not to be quite as evil as she expected. She hooks him up with his family so he can try and reconnect. But then her dad and Sylar show up and screw everything up for her and Stephen nearly puts all three of them into a black hole while he makes his escape.
Hiro & Ando
With Hiro popping Adam in and out of the casket so easily, it does make one Wonder why they dug up the grave in the first place. But I have it figured out. He can see exactly where to grab from and put him in when he can see the casket, but guessing at six feet down is much tougher.
Adam smooth talked his way out of the casket and brought Hiro and Ando to a bar that he said was the go-to place for "Specials for Hire." Apparently it was a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Adam used his poor reputation to get himself almost punched, ducking out of the way so Hiro took the hit and he could escape. Unfortunately, Knox was around and a little sharper than our Japanese dynamic duo and Adam found himself captured again.
These two are so naive, now they want to jump on board with Daphne and Knox. And then Hiro agrees to make a sacrifice by gently stabbing Ando in the heart to prove to Knox he is "badass." Of course, he can learn what he needs to and go back in time, but there's no guarantees there. Doesn't he remember the girl in the diner! They made a whole book about that. He can probably find it at Barnes & Noble if he wants to teleport over there.
Nathan & Tracy
Consumed with guilt over what she did to the reporter, Tracy wants to turn herself in. Nathan talks her out of it saying that God has a greater plan for them. God gave him a new focus and purpose in life, so Tracy proceeded to try and shatter that by saying that it was Dr. Zimmerman in California who gave them their powers. That's her theory anyway, though I'd imagine there's more to it than that.
Angela Petrelli revealed that Tracy, Nikki and Barbara were recipients of a program generating synthetic abilities. Apparently, Nathan's ability was given to him as well, which explains why it's nothing like Sylar and Peter's abilities. What this does mean, is that he could potentially manifest a genetic and natural ability as well. Perhaps the Linderman connection could tie into this. Maybe we'll learn that Daphne is another illegitimate daughter and that's why they both can see him. Of course, I'm probably talking out my ass on this one.
- The "Previously On" narrator now refers to Noah as HRG? I thought that was the name the Internets gave him.
- I'm no longer impressed with Claire's mother holding out her hand and showing us fire. We get it. You're cool. Now knock it off.
- Pinehearst. Claire's not a part of it, but Stephen thought she might be once he realized she wasn't with The Company.
- Keeping Maya alive and in a cocoon is a horrible idea, Mohinder. All she has to do is wake up and be scared. Maybe he has her in some kind of venom-based coma, spider guy that he is.
- Doesn't Sylar have super hearing? He killed that woman who had it. How could he have not heard Noah begging Stephen to make Sylar disappear. Or maybe he did and let it play out anyway for his own nefarious purposes.
- We may not be done with Stephen yet, as we have no idea where the black holes go. At least he's got a lot of stuff there with him so he doesn't get bored.
- No sign of Parkman this episode, save a file picture. Guess he's still following that turtle.
Well, we found out where Meredith had been the whole episode, and the power of the bad guy she went to take down. If she knew about his ability, why would she think fire powers are any match for a puppet master? A man who can control your actions with but a thought? Burn first and ask questions later.
Angela had another vision of Tracy and Nathan dead, Peter bloodied and with a pipe in his head, effectively killing him until it should be removed. Then she encounters a man she knows who says she won't be able to stop him because she won't even be able to move. But who is he?
At Pinehearst, Daphne meets Linderman and reports that she has the team he wanted on board, including Hiro. We learn that she's not necessarily a villain, as she doesn't like the idea of killing, But her next task is going to be her most challenging as she has to bring Matt Parkman into the fold.
She also revealed a bit more about Linderman, confirming that whatever he is, he has no physical form and seems able to come and go at will. As it turns out, the elder Parkman is behind the visions of Linderman for both Daphne and Nathan both. And the guy behind it all, comatose and hooked up to machines is Mr. Petrelli. Ah-ha, there is a plan. Suddenly, I'm back on board 100%. This could get good!

As this episode unfolded it was easy to see the foreshadowing that Arthur was behind Pinehearst, the mind version of Linderman and Daphne’s theft of ½ the formula. I didn’t see the Maury part coming though because I thought he was trapped in his own mind still.
http://vacelts.newsvine.com/_news/2008/10/14/1995091-heroes-arthur-petrelli-lives-but-is-he-an-angel-or-a-monster
And more importantly, I can’t figure out who is the good guy – Angela or Arthur? Or is it a matter of the lesser of two evils? Who do we cheer for? Who are the real villains?
http://redlightnaps.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/heroes-i-am-become-death/
The Claire storyline was pretty boring except for revealing The Puppet Master (Eric Doyle). I have a feeling we are going to see much more of him.
And Mohinder transformation is just getting gross. However, I’m afraid of what he’s going to do to Nathan and Tracy next week.
As for the files on the table, I think Maury put them there before Daphne arrived. I rewatched it twice because I was curious too.

I am just about done with this show after tonight's episode.
There are so many issues with Peter that he should be known a The Plothole. Can he heal himself or not? Why is future Peter dead from bullets while Present Peter survived a nuclear blast? Why didn't Peter always have Sylar's Power? Why does Peter's hunger desire powers he's had since season 1 (so far only attacked family Nathan and Angela)? Hell, now that we know the details of Sylar's power why does he even have the "hunger". I'd always thought Sylar was the product of some kind of Venom-like symbiote or parasite, so his ability being purely power based is stupid... I get that Peter needs Sylar's powers to fight his father but don't we have Sylar for that? I'd have felt better if we found out that Sylar ate the adrenal glands of his victims since we learned that's where powers reside.
Getting away from that milieu for now... I don't mind the main characters getting darker but must that be accompanied by getting stupider? Mohinder becomes an evil Spider Man because he injected himself with Maya's adrenaline? If I was going to test a possible power giving formula I wouldn't base it from her. Why not one of the million bottles of Claire or Adam's blood?
Nathan, Tracy, no Elle, no Micah, Linderman plotline being borrowed from Battlestar Galactica, Claire's uninteresting birth mother, Future Claire becoming HRG 2.0, Daphne being given a ton of screen time but surviving only on the actress' charm and not by good writing, Parkman suddenly being able to see the future, Sylar and HRG as a team, Claire listening to Sylar after the violation she suffered at his hands. All reasons for me to walk away from this show. Also, next week with Puppet Man we get a rehash of the end of the X-files episode with the "Pusher".
Robert Forster being Papa Patrelli is the reason I will be watching next week, but Heroes is off of my season pass. Its looking like this is another series that should have been made in England where they stop a show once the worthwhile story is over.

I'm not trying to bash you, but all the reasons you listed are things that probably will be answered during the season. It's like you wanted the entire season in a single episode and since you didn't get that you aren't happy. If you were really interested in those questions you listed then why wouldn't you watch? They aren't plot holes, they are questions for the season to keep people watching.

"Why is future Peter dead from bullets while Present Peter survived a nuclear blast?"
The Hatian was there to negate future Peters powers. He was not present when Sylar blew up (which makes me ask why didn't they bring the Hatian on that mission?)
"Why didn't Peter always have Sylar's Power? Why does Peter's hunger desire powers he's had since season 1"
Peter absorbs powers, but not enough is known about how. He may only be able to passively absorb one power from someone and TK was it. He may be able to absorb more if he actively absorbs. When Peter gets a power, he basically gets it without an instruction manual. Sylars power allows him to not only gain the ability, but full knowledge on how to use it to its full potential.
"If I was going to test a possible power giving formula I wouldn't base it from her. Why not one of the million bottles of Claire or Adam's blood?"
Yeah, I thought that whole bit was contrived. I mean between he and his father, they worked for years to discover and prove powers and in one aha moment, Mohinder gives himself a power within hours.

rick cokely,
I appreciate the discussion. To answer your questions I'm not looking for there to be answers to a whole season in one episode but these are things that just stick out to me.
They may choose to answer them but honestly I've just lost a lot of faith in the writing on this show. Which also is where my entire last section was focused. I feel like the writing went downhill last season but with the strike I gave them a pass. Now they've had more than enough time to get season 3 together and these things just stick out to me. Time travel should not be the answer to every problem and I feel like the writers have developed it as a crutch.
The main difference between us seems to be faith in the storytelling. I don't have the faith I once did, maybe the missing element is Bryan Fuller as I think he wrote the best episode of Season 1 and his presence has been missing since he started Pushing Daisies last year.

This episode had a loose plotline, but what really turned me off was the Hiro scenes. So Hiro and Ando lose Adam Monroe in a bar, and are later approached by Knox, who we already know to be a killer, and Daphne... and yet Hiro, without any second thoughts, takes the sword that Knox gives him and stabs Ando in the heart because he wants to be badass?! I don't remember Hiro having even met Knox before, let alone trust him... what the hell is going on here?

"Adam used his poor reputation to get himself almost punched"
I think you missed an important part of what makes Adam Adam. He didn't really get punched. He walked in the bar and ordered "the usual" or something like that, which was code for "leap over the bar and punch the person behind me so I can run away."

I quit watching about halfway through this episode. Peter all of a sudden evil? Claire all of a sudden trying to capture villians on her own?
I didn't mean to quit watching, it just sort of happened. I found myself paying less and less attention as the episode went on until I finally just turned it off.
I'm over it.

Well, it wasn't all of a sudden. Last week Peter absorbed Sylar's main ability and with it an insatiable hunger to learn how ones ability works to the point where he could care less that killing someone is the only way to do it.
A lot of people could be spared if these two would just absorb X ray vision from someone. Time to check the Companies files.
Claire has been slowly driven, over the course of the season to get to the point she is at. None of this was all of a sudden.

im disappointed they got rid of the stephen character so fast. a vortex power is soooooo useful with some people and they got rid of him and nobody stole his power as of yet. unless they will say peter was able to steal it while he was in level 5.
anyway her going after the puppet master was dumb.
mohinder is annoying. so is maya always being such a p*ssy.
hrg i never liked and finally claire is realizing hes nothing but bad.
peter/nathan/sylar's dad is behind all of this and things will get interesting but he still isnt any match for his kids if his only power is to hold people still.
parkman has always kind of been boring so i dont miss him.

Btw, we learned that Nathan doesn't have the genetic marker to develop powers on his own. But that doesn't mean other powers aren't in his future depending on how the formula works. (Pretty good judging by future world scenes of people flying everywhere. That would certainly cut down on our fossil fuel use.)
I'm more on board than ever after last night's episode. I love the Jungian path more than a few of the characters are on right now. Having them react differently to their situations keeps the show interesting.

Has anyone brought up the fact that the s-like symbol that has been seen for the past 3 episodes is half of a double helix from Pinehearst logo? There are very few details in Heroes that make me think the writer's have any over-arching story, but this gives me some hope.

how do we know that Hiro didn't stop time and set something up with Ando, and not Actually kill him? No way can he just kill Ando and move on, or kill Ando and then figure he'll go back in time and save him later... He's already said that he can't change the past the he knows. Next week better yield some explanations

Exactly. Hiro literally has all the time in the world to set something up with Ando. Even if the speedster saw it, she seems like someone who would play along.
