(S05E03) "Yeah yeah - the hair. It's one of the many things that makes me happy." - Meredith
This wasn't the best episode of Grey's Anatomy, but I think it got back to a lot of the core reasons that made this show good in the first place. The focus has finally returned to Meredith and Derek, which was sorely lacking last season. This show just doesn't make sense to me when the tension between those two is ignored or pushed aside for one of the bajillion other relationships going on.
Beyond that, there was plenty of humor - another thing that had been lacking. So I'm feeling good about where this season is going to take us and as I said - it starts with Mer and Der.
McDreamy is officially moved in with Meredith now and after getting through one minor conflict (do the roommates stay or get kicked out), it seems like they're doing OK. However, if we've learned one thing about these two, you know they'll be getting into it next week about something entirely different.
That's the real fine line about this show. It doesn't work when they're not together (last season) but at the same time, they can't be together and have everything be perfect either... or else the show would be ending. So the success really rests in the conflict they encounter together and last night's spat was decent, but clearly just a filler.
My guess is that something big needs to happen this season and if we're going to place bets, I'd put my money on Meredith either getting pregnant or getting really sick. Either of those outcomes would certainly create some solid relationship conflict.
OK, on to the rest of the episode. There was a leak. A big one. Water dripping everywhere and flooding, but none of Bailey's ominous "poo water." I'm guessing it wasn't a sewerage line that burst. Normally, I don't like when a patient's story coincides with other happenings in an episode, but this time I liked it. The unlucky Mr. O'Brien and all his misfortunes were pretty funny to watch as the hospital was crumbling around him. Reminded me of a Hurley episode on Lost.
For those that were looking for some big developments between Callie and Hahn, we got let down there. I feel like this whole pseudo-lesbian/bi-sexual exploration thing blew up last season and everyone was all "whoa!" and now it's sort of being forgotten. Think about it - nothing has really happened other than Sloan finding out. Although, once Melissa George pops up, I'm hoping that will change.

I'm hoping that George passes the intern exam this time around because it's old to me. I'm sick of this story. Make him a resident already!
-
With Webber's new teaching rules in effect, I love how it's leveled the playing field. Especially for Yang. No more "defacto specialization" means she doesn't have the answers all the time and Lexie schooled her with headache man. Good stuff.
-
Now that all the patients got shipped off to Mercy West and Seattle Presbyterian, does that mean that Seattle Grace is going to plummet in the ratings even more? I would imagine.
-
Glad to see Dr. Wyatt back. She was one of the high points last season.
-
What happened to
VincentOwen Hunt (Kevin McKidd)? I though he was going to be around longer than just the premiere? There wasn't even any mention of him though. Kind of odd considering everything he did. -
Lexie is a fool. She's picking George over assisting on surgeries? Bad move. I hope this somehow comes back to bite her, because I really don't want those two getting together.
-
I'm not sure I agree with Dr. Wyatt when she said that Yang is scared to lose Meredith to Derek. Regardless, I think it'd be funny if we saw Yang in therapy too.
The one thing that really pleased me about this episode was Alex and Izzie. Clearly, they're going to get back together and it's about time. Now that Denny and Ava and all the other bad choices are out of the way, it's nice to see some of these old original stories popping back up. Like I said earlier, I'm feeling good about where this season is going to take us.

Who's Vincent? Kevin McKidd's character is Owen Hunt. He'll be back later in the season.

Oh, so you LIKED it when they focus on MerDer? That's pretty much when I tune out of the show. I like all the other characters more, and I disagree on Lexie/George. They're all kinds of adorable together, but they either do something with them or stop with the whole Lexie pining over him sort of deal.
George will pass his exam. It would just be unbelievably cruel to his character if he failed.
They're slowly building the Hahn/Callie relationship. It's only been two episodes this season. Patience is a virtue.
Alex and Izzie? Man I was such a HUGE supporter of them in the hey day of the show, but for some reason if they get together now I feel just a bit cheated. They're both so damaged and hurting and alone that we're not sure if they're getting together just to stop all of that or if they really truly like one another. We'll see.
And can I just say? Poor Seattle Grace.

That night's episode was the GA that I have loved. I think this season is full of promise if last night's episode was any indication.
Not saying that it was fantastic... but it was better than it has been.

I was wondering about the military doctor as well. I thought he was joining things. Of course, it is only one episode. I really liked Izzie in this episode. She seemed back to her old self, especially with the whole apartment mess.

This show jumps the shark almost weekly. Now a plumbing problem shuts down the hospital...Please! Too bad show is named Grey's Anatomy. Meridith is the winest most annoying person on TV.

I believe they're building Lexie as someone who will realize she has to choose the hospital and career over her feelings for George at first (and vice versa if George passes his exam and finds out about Lexie's feelings--which I figure both will happen or this is all for nothing), but in the end they'll be together.
My only complaint is how does George end up with all these women? Nice guys do finish last but apparently not in GA's world.
I think this season is getting back to basics--especially by slow-building these storylines. The problem with the last two season have been a lot of hectic and rushed storylines. They need to establish the over-arching storylines and see them through a whole season.

I agree. This season is looking up and it hopefully it gets better. I do like Private Practice over Grey's though. It seems more heartfelt and real opposed to all this melodramtic stuff.

George needs leave at this point. I mean, he's going to pass his exam, and he and Lexie are going to get together (in the Quest video that Grey's did to promote the premiere there was a shot of Lexie kissing him), but I think he should just go. He's the least exciting character on the show - when was the last time he contributed substantially to a plot?
I thought the whole Lexie outsmarting Christina thing was ridiculous - I mean, it would have been ok had they not thrown in the photographic memory. You can tell that that card will be used over and over again randomly, and it makes me not like Lexie's character.

I do agree that this season is attempting to get back to basics, and this episode proved it's taking a few steps in the right direction. But one thing that needs to be done away with is the icicles and floods and many other disasters. This show did fine without a big event like that every week, and it sort of cheapens this show and makes it feel more like ER or something.
What was nice about this episode was the attempt at making these characters more likable again. I hated almost everyone last week, but found myself rediscovering what I enjoyed about some of these people. Derek was the only one who came off as a total jerk this episode, with his decision he made without consulting anyone.

I thought this episode was ok, but not one of their best. I'm sick of the weekly major disasters and undecided on the Meredith & Dereck relationship. When they're broken up I want them together, and when they're together I want the episodes all about them to stop! I am interested to see where the George/Lexie relationship goes.
