She's almost completely covered in ink, she's dating a rock star and she reserves the right to refuse tattoos to anyone. Kat Von D is one tough lady. In season 2 of her show L.A. Ink (premieres Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10PM EST), Kat brings in even more celebrities for some body art and, of course, they all bring their drama -- some sad and some just plain crazy for Democracy.
We talked to Kat about her busy schedule and growing business, her favorite TV shows and why she refuses to tattoo a crazy underwater outer space scene anywhere on anyone's body ... so just don't even ask.
Is balancing work and the show and love getting any easier?
I have a pretty structured life because I'm all, like, OCD about it -- I train in the morning, I go to the gym and work out, get ready, I'm at the shop by 9AM, we film until 9PM and then I tattoo off-camera from 9-midnight ... and then do it all over again. [Laughs]
What's up for season 2?
There's definitely drama -- I think that this season is really the best. It's tricky because it's gotten so huge, so I've hired like an actual general manager who comes in and has to kick a little bit of ass to get us up to speed. So she'll be a new cast member -- I'm really excited about it because I think people are gonna love her.
You set the Guinness Book record for doing 400 tattoos in 24 hours -- is the record still yours?
No, my ex-husband actually broke my record. [Laughs] I love it, I knew he was going to -- I talked about it in my book before it went to print, like, 'If anybody's gonna break my record, it's gonna be Oliver.' He's really competitive.
Will you try to beat him now? How many did he do?
No ... he did 15 more than I did. I don't think I'd want to. It means more to set the record and always be the world setter, so I think I'm happy with that.
Have you ever refused to tattoo someone because you didn't like what they wanted inked on their body?
All the time! It's not so much my opinion about it -- I think it's just more like, Is this person gonna regret it? If they're gonna regret it, it's my responsibility to kind of try my best to guide them. But things that go against my morals I won't do and I don't have a problem saying no to things I think I'm not capable of doing. If I'm not the man for the job, I have no problem telling you who is, you know? But sometimes people come in with a good idea and they see it in their brain a certain way, and it's just like a total fantasy, never gonna happen. So sometimes we have to tell people like, 'Yo, you're not gonna get that crazy underwater outer space scene ... [laughs] on your throat.' [Laughs]
Have you and your new boyfriend, Nikki Sixx, gotten each other's names somewhere yet?
[Laughs] You know, we haven't gotten our names yet, but we got our initials on our ring finger, like under our ring finger, so you don't really see it unless you can see the palm of my hand. It's more of a tattoo we got just for ourselves. We're doing really f***ing great and I'm so happy -- I can't believe it's been almost seven months!
So will we be seeing a lot of him on the show?
I tattooed him on the show -- I don't want to give away what it is because it's awesome! But you know, it created probably one of the most awesome, rock 'n' roll moments in history to me. Just seeing where somebody comes from -- he got this tattoo to surprise one of the members of Motley Crue and, at first, we were all kind of laughing about it, and then it turned into the most emotional rollercoaster, but in a positive way. It's pretty life-changing ... I can't wait to show people that.
Aw, come on -- you can't give us a hint?
He gets a portrait of somebody in the band, but nobody told the guy -- I can't believe we kept it a secret. [Laughs] When it happened, people you think would never cry were bawling ... it was awesome.
The election's coming up - have you had many political tattoo requests lately?
The craziest one I got ... you know The Game, the rapper? He gets tattooed on our show, but after I tattooed him for the show he texted me like, 'Hey I want to get this back piece.' And I was like, 'Alright, cool,' but he wants to get this huge portrait of Obama. Like the whole entire back. And I'm like, 'What if it doesn't work out?' [Laughs] But I thought that was a pretty cool request -- it's not so much whether he wins or loses, it's more about the fact that it's a really interesting time. The candidates are a symbol of change and open-mindedness.
But that's intense!
It's crazy because the celebrities that we've tattooed on the show this season have all really kicked my a** and surprised me with their stories. Like Dave Navarro -- he was probably one of the most intense. I think people are really going to see him in a different light after they see his tattoo and what it's all about. I had no clue that his mother had been murdered when he was 15, and he talks a lot about how it affected his relationships with women. He got pretty intimate -- that's gonna be on the premiere, so I'm excited about that one.
What's your favorite guilty pleasure show?
I don't have any guilty pleasures because I'm not guilty. [Laughs] I don't feel bad! I tend to steer away from watching a lot of reality shows -- I'm way more into like documentary-style stuff. I love Forensic Files and stuff like that. I'm kind of into that whole creepy thing. Nikki is a big fan of that show House so he says he's gonna get me into it, but I don't know. But like Little People, Big World ... that's pretty hypnotizing.
You and Nikki should totally guest star on House ...
Well, you know what? I think we got an offer for it, so something might happen. We'll see.

Jeeez, this girl (or her show) must have hired a new publicist too. She's everywhere, on everything, plugging herself and her show.
I need to get paid to do that.

Kwik hit to say hi,
My names james im 23, i live in a little country called New Zealand, with around 4 million people, great sporting nation, came across L.A ink show while sitting at home on one day, surfing.
Just wanted to say i have great admiration for artists, tattooist, graffitti artists and such, i do alittle tattooing but noting as complex and intricate as some of the work on the show, maybe couple years at school might do the trick...
Anyway, love the show, keep up the awsome work
and Kats smokin hot!
James
