Ratings for NBC's Heroes are falling each and every week. The most recent episode was down 11% from the previous week's numbers.I gotta tell ya, I don't get it. I'm really loving this season, but TV critics left and right have given up on the show. Sure, it's completely ridiculous and over the top, but if you remember the first season wasn't exactly a PBS documentary. The show has always been comic-book crazy, so I wonder if the writers strike had a bigger impact on the show than we all thought. Or maybe people have just gotten tired of the show, not because of any massive drop in quality but just because they're watching other things, not into sci-fi as much anymore, or don't want to follow another show with a continuing storyline and a lot of characters. I don't know, but I do know that the show is a ton of fun to watch, and even if there is a lot going on, it's a great ride.
It probably doesn't help that the ratings for the lead in show, Chuck, are down 15%. Wow, if these two shows go away, what other hour-long shows will there be left to watch on NBC? I'm not sitting through The Biggest Loser or Knight Rider, sorry. I wonder how My Own Worst Enemy will do in the Monday at 10 time slot when it premieres next week?

I have to agree. I don't get it. Perhaps everyone is using tivo and dvr's instead of watching it live. The strike did hurt some shows however. It's political season but like most I am already tired of that. Maybe people are actually watching football. There has been some great Monday night football games on as of late. I can't stand these reality shows! If that's what everyone is watching than that explains a lot about are future. Or....people are simply watching less TV? If NBC dumps these shows I will actually stop watching majority of TV altogether. Maybe that has finally happened with some viewers. Tired of the quick trigger just because it doesn't get huge rating right away.

I completly agree. I HATE reality shows and never watch them. As a matter of fact I rarely watch TV. I typically tune in just to watch my favorite shows, which are very few. On Mon. I tune in for Heros and Chuck and thats it. I LOVE Heros. I enjoy shows wiith lots going on, not just easy mindless programming. I think Heros is intresting and it keeps me comming back. They need to give the shows a chance. With football and all the debates, people may be watching those, after this is all over I bet ratings will go back up.

I think it's a combination of factors, but the biggest being that Heroes just isn't very good.
And I'm one of the few people who honestly sort of liked the second season.

NBC better do the smart thing and both both shows to more sensible time slots. Too many things to watch on Monday!

the first "volume" was the best because there were so many mysteries: how did they get their powers, who are these people, how is everything connected. some of those questions have been partially answered, but instead of re-examining some of those mysteries, the story has become a really boring "let's save the world" plotlines that people have seen before. they should get back to how everyone got their powers.
oh! and they should also kill off half the cast.

It doesn't surprise me.
I've been a fan through the first 2 seasons and forgave them for last years season which was shortened due to the strike.
The fact of the matter is there are TOO MANY characters. Season 1 focused on a core group of characters and didn't stray.
Season 3 is out of control. I will say that the latest episode was a bit better than the previous episodes in Season 3. Episode 1 of Season 3 just tried to do far too much.
They are also recycling storylines far too much. Gabriel going nuclear and exploding? We have seen this before.
They are trying to do too much with it and I think it has jumped the shark. Most people I talk to offline feel the same way.

You know, I think you've got a good point there. My interest in this show has been shrinking and I wasn't really sure why. There does just seem to be too many characters and plot lines running around. I just keep wondering if and when all the plots will eventually run into each other.
My other main complaint with this show has always been that it is too slow. They just don't seem to give you enough carrots each week to keep you going. Maybe if they focus on fewer characters they could progress the plot a little more each week.

I'm not surprised about Heroes. Even though I still watch it (on DVR of course), most of my friends have simply given up on the show. I think it's a combination of last years disastrous season plus the writer's strike that has turned people off.
I think that this season isn't bad, but I find myself not really caring anymore...

My problem with the show lately is the confusion around whose good whose bad combined with the timeline shifts and lastly nobody ever dies making the show not true to its own internal logic.
And the strike delay made me forget almost everything I used to know about what was going on. Skylar was a great bad guy the 1st year, but they should have left him dead.

I have a agree about Sylar and even Adam. Fantastic characters, great bad guys, leave them dead a little longer.

Exactly! It's sort of the same issue 24 had with Nina and Sherry Palmer. Both great villians, but then they were both brought back in the next two subsequent seasons and it strained logic. If they had waited a year and brought them back it would have been much better.
Now, with Heroes, Adam was out of commission for what? Three episodes? Syler never left. Give us a season to forget about them and then bring them back as a surprise.
Sadly, Zachary Quinto has become one of the"faces" of the show and will never be killed or disappear.

just a thought...but could what is causing the decline in Heros' rating be attributed to the success of super hero movies? More specifically in comparision, the movies play more on the action and the superhero's power while Heros (especially this season) feels more like a daytime soap and not comic book action like the movies.

I don't know what show you're watching, the quality of writing is nowhere near season 1 levels. I got through the first two episodes and noticed that writing is still at the level of season 2 (ie not good).

Chuck does not deserve the low ratings. I am hoping upon hope that NBC realizes that it truly has a "hit" show that just needs to move to a better time. Monday nights are too crowded with shows that are targeting the same demos. Not exactly wise, is it?

The first season had a catch - "save the cheerleader, save the world"....which made even having a huge giant cast worked cause there was a focus. There isn't a real focus yet. I think it's all Peter driven this season, but there isn't a memorable catch phrase. It's only been 2 episodes, but they need to really hook onto something soon.
That and also I think it is a political season. People are definitely tuned into the news. On top of that, with the economy on mind, lots of people are following that. News is immediate and people wanna be updated with the latest. TV shows can wait a day or two or even till the weekend. Plus many are switching online. I pretty much switched to watching almost everything exclusively online. So unless if they factor the online audience in and that it's lower when that's combined with the actual TV airing, then we can really say it's dropping. But if it's purely just a matter of its initial airing ratings, well I'm pretty sure every show will start experiencing drop because it's just so much easier to watch on demand.

I've given up caring as well. Season 3 has not significantly improved over the mess of the second season. In addition the series has managed to throw internal consistency out of the window. Whatever happened to "save the cheerleader, save the world". Sylar got to Claire, took her powers, she didn't die as in the paintings and now can't die. Oh and Sylar isn't technically evil anymore. In other words they completely removed any of the original reasoning of the first season. It is meaningless. If they can write that badly and not care about it then I won't care either. Bye bye Heroes, fad that you were. You won't be missed.

As a comic book reader, I think your claim that Heroes is "comic-book crazy" is totally off-base. If anything, I'm not watching anymore because it's soap opera crazy. As others have mentioned, there are way too many characters and too many storylines. Look, we already have the "twins/triplets separated at birth" storyline that is basic to soap operas. The creator(s) is trying to establish a superpowered family dynasty but I don't like any of the family members so there just isn't anything there to really hold my interest.

I like both shows, but I don't watch them live. I have been DVR-ing them because I have been watching politics lately, and also the baseball games. I am sure viewership will increase once the presidential election is over as well as the Fall Classic. Also, Heroes and Chuck are NBC's strongest one hour shows (along with SVU). They need to start promoting these shows more.

I think last season's WGA strike hurt these shows because the writers had too much time off. Too much time means to many revisions to ideas that were good to begin with. My old boss used to say: "Good's worst enemy is even better."
