(S07E07) Things were a little different for the results show this week. The unfortunate injury that forced Misty May-Treanor out of the competition left the producers in a quandary. If they were to eliminate another team, they would be a week short for the planned season. Personally, I would have rather seen an elimination tonight and an extra week tacked on somewhere down the line. Alas, it wasn't meant to be. Much like what we saw when Sara Evans quit the show, they stretched, and stretched, before getting to the announcement. Along with that slow coming revelation, they also managed to have the best collection of music and dance of the season so far.

I'll not drag it out. Nobody was booted from the show this week. The scores from this week will be combined with those from next week, just like with the Sara situation. In fact, it's so much like the Sara situation that I can pretty much just copy and paste my thoughts from that post in October of '06. Back then, I said:
"Really, the dragging out of the decision for what to do about Sara Misty leaving is just stupid. The show is getting great ratings already. It doesn't need to jerk viewers around to get them to keep watching. It's a cheap gimmick. Teasing it before going to every commercial break, and pushing it to the last three minutes smacked of local news, and that's not a compliment."
And it applies just as well today. This time I would add, paraphrasing Len, cheap gimmicks and manufactured drama are the last refuge of bad reality shows. Dancing With The Stars is better than that.
Anyway, getting back to the show, aside from the annoyance of what they were doing about Misty, it was really good. This was easily my favorite collection of musical performances and dance numbers so far. Of course, the highlight was the encore. Rather than a typical choice, they gave the slot to the jive that Maks & Misty didn't get to do Monday night. Edyta stopped by to fill in for Misty. It was a very fun performance.
Derek and Julianne also had a nice performance as they joined Jennifer Hudson. I look like a Motörhead fan, but if you were to dig into my music collection you'd find a preponderance of female pop and rock vocalists, so that one was great in my book. The other musical guest, Kool & The Gang, was right up there as well. The thing that occurred to me during their performance was that the results show needs more of that. They ended up doing a medley of their hits, but I would happily trade a couple of the taped packages to hear three or four of those in their entirety.
Those taped packages were, as usual, mostly uneventful. I didn't get much out of the piece on what skills the celebrities bring to the ballroom, or how dangerous dancing is. The best of the packages featured Brian Friedman, Travis Payne, and Dave Scott giving their thoughts on the choreographers, and the show. Better than usual, but those bits are still the slow spot of the results show.
As to the results, as we already know, there wasn't an elimination. The one thing we did learn was that Rocco & Karina would have been out. Yes, Cloris would have made it through to week four either way. That puts Rocco on the hot seat next week. I don't get why people are voting for Cloris, but hey, that's how the show works. More power to them. I'll see you back here next week for the new 90 minute performance show, and a results show with actual results.

I wish more people would vote for Rocco and the judges wouldn't be so harsh. He's great. Cloris's dance was simply a joke -- and I wish they didn't give her the difficult jive but what she did wasn't even a dance -- so it baffles me why she was safe.
Anyways, it was Derek not Cody who danced with sister julianne when Jennifer Hudson sang and very well if I may add.

The reason why Cloris was safe is that she has a bigger fanbase backing her up than Rocco. Season 2 brought it up with Master P, it's likely a combination of the fanbase and the "Vote for the Worst" crowd that will continue to save her.

Ahhh, you are right seth. I think I've just typed Cody and Julianne too many times. I've corrected that.

I agree Cloris shoule not be left in.It is soooo unfair for the others that are working so hard to be booted out. What the judges say don't really matter anyway its whoever is voting at home keeps people in. It is a joke now.

Well, they combine the votes with the judges scores, so if they would give her 1's instead of 6's then it might be more likely that she couldn't muster enough votes.

I HAVE WATCHED DANCING EVERY SEASON AND I HAVE LOVED IT BUT THIS SEASON HAS BECOME A JOKE. IF I WERE A CONTESTENT I WOULD BE FURIOUS THAT CLORIS WAS STILL ON THE SHOW. I RESPECT HER FOR HER PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS BUT IT IS AN INSULT TO THE JUDGES AND TO THE OTHER PLAYERS FOR HER TO STAY ON. I WILL NEVER WATCH THE SHOW AGAIN. IT HAS BECOME LIKE SO MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT ARE SO GOOD TO START WITH AND THEN BECOME NO GOOD. IT IS A SHAME BECAUSE DANCING WAS A SHOW WE ALL ENJOYED AND WAS SO BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH. IT HAS BECOME A JOKE.

you are sooooo right - I've been thinking the same thing but you put it into words for me. Show is fast loosing me by dragging things on too long and having ridiculous older celebs make fools of themselves and the show.

Like all reality shows that the viewers vote counts, it usually doesn't eliminate the "worst" for lack of another word, due to the popularity and likeness of the star, or just voting because the judges criticize too much. They are not professionals, and due to the short time they are given, I believe they all do a very good job; some better. To criticize as the judges do, is bothering somewhat because they know how long it takes to be a professional and win at the professional level. Some starts aren't dancers and we all know that, but give them a little credit for trying.

I completely agree with you RMCA. One thing that the show definitely underscores is that this kind of dancing is very, very tough to do well. I don't think people give the stars nearly enough credit for what they do accomplish. I think it is OK for the judges to be kind of brutally honest however, because they represent the form of Ballroom, and it's always fun to remember that being a pro entertainer doesn't make you a pro dancer. Come to think of it the reverse is true too!

Leachman is nothing but an old fool. Her sorry dancing ass should have been thrown off in Week 1. Why should the public vote? Let's leave it up to the judges. The whole show is becoming a joke.

I agree with Brett about ABC creating cheap network news type of broadcasting. As soon as the first tease about Misty was announced and they went to commercial, I went to a different show. They continue to drag out everything with this show and if I want the results I can tune into the last few minutes of the elimination show or just check online. They've lost this viewer

I only started watching to see Leachman on the program. She's 86 years old for goodness sake, and still able to perform. In contrast, my 83 year old mother-in-law can't always remember where the bathroom is. I think some viewers take this show FAR TOO seriously. If/when Cloris gets voted off, I'll have no need to keep watching.

My wife and I have enjoyed the show up until this year. Cloris Leachman is a joke and should never have been on the show. Not only is she bringing the show down, but her constant interruptions and antics have made her as obnoxious as Adam was last year. She has been a great actress, but at her age should not be in a dance competition.

I respect the fact that she at her age wanted to dance period. It shows alot of older people that they can be much more active in their lives. However, you should be realistic and after last weeks horrible performance she should be long gone.
