(S34E04) This season so far has been more than a little iffy, but Anne Hathaway managed to make things slightly less painful. Even though the writing still wasn't quite spot-on, Hathaway's enthusiasm brought a light to the show that made even the most irritating sketches a bit more bearable. Honestly, I had my doubts about her hosting abilities, mainly because her good girl giddiness clashes heavily with my black-hearted bitchiness, but I didn't mind her. I'm sure she could even easily make the jump from "pretty good" to "absolutely spectacular," given the right material. Also, she managed to read the cue cards without looking like a complete idiot, which most other hosts have somehow turned into a massive ordeal lately. Mmm, literacy plus natural reading: a combination so deliciously rare, the writers don't even know what to do with it.Here are some video highlights from the episode:Cold Open: "VP Debates": Ahh, the big news of the week! Once again, Tina Fey put on a half-Canadian accent to play Tina Fey and Jason Sudeikis stepped in as Joe Biden. I have decided either they have worked out a super-nice deal with Fey to keep her as Palin, or nobody expects John McCain to win and they're not worried about getting one of the cast members to play her in the long-term. Also, Queen Latifah's appearance was a pleasant surprise, even if it reminded us that the cast isn't particularly diverse at the moment.
"The Lawrence Welk Show": This unusually bizarre sketch set the tone for the rest of the episode. I could have sworn I've seen another SNL or YouTube'd sketch in which some guy freaks out over his baby hands. Yes? No? In any case, baby hands are inherently funny, so I laughed like an idiot all the way through.
"C-SPAN: Bailout": Another hot topic in the news was the bailout -- I mean, rescue. This was pretty straightforward. I liked Fred Armisen's take on Barney Frank, even though it got a little Ted Stevens-y.
"Digital Short: Extreme Challenge": This was hilarious and probably the best piece from the night. I laughed through the whole thing. It doesn't get much better than pinning chairs and screaming at self-loathing referees.
"Mary Poppins": Hilarious idea, but the execution fell a bit short. There was a lot of singing going on in this episode. At least Hathaway had the voice to pull it off, even if the singing wasn't always justified in the scene. I must also commend her for not forcing a song into her monologue like oh-so-many other stars.
"Mark Wahlberg Talks To Animals": The very idea of this was brilliant and I started laughing as soon as the title came up. Despite the fact that Samberg's Wahlberg impression was fantastic, this could have been done so much better, perhaps with stuffed animals instead of real ones. I remember laughing until I cried back when Will Ferrell's Robert Goulet went absolutely mental on a stuffed goat. I guess taxidermy is inherently funny as well.

You forgot to mention the night's worst sketch of Casey Wilson impersonating Katy Perry. This sketch was all wrong and not funny.

Oh my God, the Katy Perry sketch was so bad!!!
And I think they need to get a different guy to play Biden if/when Obama wins the election. He just didn't pull it off in my eyes.

It was bad, but not any worse than Katy Perry's actual music.

Could the baby arm you were referring to be the cloned baby character Rachel Dratch did around the time that cult claimed that it could clone a human?

Best episode and host of the season so far. Yes, not saying much, but it's still something to be commended.
I'm also a big Killers fan, so it was a great episode for me overall.

I was impressed with Anne Hathaway (beyond her hotness that usually impresses me). She read naturally, she sings well, she really sold the Mary Poppins sketch, and her mugging to the camera in the bailout sketch was pretty damn funny.

Yes even with four episodes so far this was easily the best.
Half-Canadian? We don't talk like that, that's North Dakota/Minnesota/Wisconsin.

More than a little iffy? I think the last two weeks have been VERY strong. Aside from the monologue and the dance sketch, I'd give last night's show an A-, maybe even an A. The cold open was one of the best in years, and the Mary Poppins sketch was very cleverly written and acted. (I'm guessing the Katy Perry bit, which a couple people have criticized, was a time-filler.)
I didn't see a review of last week's show, but it was good too. Anna Faris really seemed like part of the cast.

That digital short was terrible, there was a kernel of a good idea but it was weakly executed and was in no way the best thing.

I agree with you completely. The concept of the short COULD have been good, but like always, Samberg (or whoever writes the things) was too busy laughing at his own jokes and thinking that random irrelevance automatically means you don't need to be funny to realize that it went on way too long and not only wasn't funny, but wasn't clever or interesting either. I've never thought the Digital Shorts were funny (and I've been saying it on here for years, you can check) but so far this season they have been so bad they actually made me want to change the channel and never watch SNL again.
On the plus side, aside from this and a few brief cameos in the backgrounds of other sketches, Samberg was barely in this episode which made me happy. Actually, a lot of the cast members seemed to be absent this week. It seemed like the "featured players" Casey Wilson and they guy who looks like the love child of Belushi and Farley were in every other sketch this week after not having much to do in the first three, and that also made me happy.

I'm pretty sure it's original. Sounds a lot like the one they used for "Andy Punching" from last season. It also sounds similar in style to this one, also by Jorma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL4m2AeiKHk

First off - GREAT episode of SNL last night. Hathaway nailed the Mary Poppins bit, and Mark Wahlberg talks to animals was hilarious ('Say hello to your mutha for me alright?')
Tina Fey was great as usual, but half-Canadian accent? Please. It was nothing like that. I've lived in the Canadian prairies my whole life, and the only people I know who talk like they are from Fargo are actually FROM Fargo.
Also - I have never met a single Canadian who says 'Abooot'.

There are some Canucks in Southern Ontario who definitely come *close* to saying "aboot". I can definitely hear a small bit of an accent. But you're right about the so-called "Canadian" accent Palin has -- I only hear that when I head down into North Dakota and Minnesota, and a bit in Wisconsin. Around Manitoba and Western Canada, it sounds more like Northern California than anything (that's why lots of Winnipeggers end up being American news anchors -- no discernable accent).

nope. sorry. the flute video from palin's miss alaska pageant has been floating around for a bit. it's an obvious joke - ANYBODY writing that skit would have the talent portion joke. plus SNL probably had the writers working on it from the second the debates began (the talent portion joke may have been written well before as well). to claim they ripped off a 3 second joke from an untalented group of video hacks in an 11 minute skit is LUDICROUS.

Anne Hathaway was a surprise. I didn't know she had such a nice singing voice (her Mary Poppins was spot on) and she was the most natural at reading the cue cards of anyone so far this season. Maybe she just spent some time actually looking at the script. But the highlight of the show - as usual - was Kristin Wiig. She is a genius! With Amy leaving after the election, maybe Emmy voters will give Kristin her due next year!

Yeah, the doll hands thing was already used by Jon glaser in his "Tiny Hands" web series, which is what you're referring to. Google "Tiny Hands Jon Glaser" and you'll probably find it.

YES. TINY HANDS. THANK YOU. I couldn't remember where I had seen that before and it's been bothering me since SNL last night.
