The evolution of TV Squad

TV Squad logoAs several of you have noticed, we had a decrease in the number of posts recently at TV Squad, and we apologize for any concern or confusion that resulted. Part of that slowdown stemmed from some behind-the-scenes issues, which have now been resolved. And part of it came about because Keith and I wanted to take some time to talk about the direction of the blog with our writers and with our hosts at AOL.

During those discussions, we thought about what people like the most about us: the comprehensive episode reviews and the funny, thoughtful commentary about the shows we love. Over time, the site has become very heavy on the former and light on the latter, and we decided that we need to get things back in balance.

So, starting today, the evolution of TV Squad starts in earnest. Don't worry; it'll largely be the same as the site that you've enjoyed for the last three-and-a-half years, but the content will be a little tighter and a little more opinionated than it has been in the past.

The first change is that, as you may have already noticed, we will be doing a more limited set of episode reviews week in and week out. But that doesn't mean that we won't comment on shows we're not reviewing. On the contrary; this should free up our writers to comment on any show they want, not just the ones they've reviewed past. If someone wants to mention something about Smallville, for instance, they can.

We won't leave fans of shows stranded, though; in the near future, we will have a place for fans to discuss episodes of their favorite shows, whether we review them or not. Any blog lives and dies with its commenters, and we want to make sure that they continue the conversation for as long as they feel like it.

Another change you'll see over the next few months is that we will publish features that go more in-depth than they have in the past. Sure, the lists and other light features will stick around; they're fun and give readers a source of debate. But feature packages such as our recent history of reality TV have been well-received and very satisfying for our bloggers to do; you'll see more of those going forward.

What else will you see? Hard to say. We're going to try some things out and see what works and what doesn't. Like I said, this is an evolution, not a wholesale change. What we hope is that you folks stay with us while we make TV Squad a more dynamic and fun reading experience.

OK, I'm ready for the onslaught (heh). Any comments, complaints, and wonderations should be posted below. I'll answer your questions as best as I can over the next few days.
