(S02E05) "I would like to experience the world of Chuck Bass." - DanOnce again this week, we were treated to a rocking episode of Gossip Girl, which included the usual backstabbing but also Jenny lying, Dan getting arrested and Chuck revealing a deep secret.
As a Chuck fan, I found the episode a little bit awkward but satisfying at the same time. It was uncomfortable to see Chuck at the bottom of the barrel and agree to hang with Dan because he was bored to death. However, Dan the following Chuck around allowed us to get to know Chuck a little bit more.
I believe that Chuck really thinks he is to blame for his mother's death and that she did indeed die while giving birth to him. I think Chuck telling Dan that his mother died in a plane crash was a defense mechanism in case Dan wrote more stories about Chuck. His mother dying while giving birth to him would be a plausible explanation as to why Chuck behaves the way he does and why his father doesn't care much about him. I'm surprised that Chuck didn't trash Dan's story; so I expect it to resurface at one point or another or to have Chuck try to make some life changes.
Serena, Serena, Serena! I don't get her anymore. One minute she is good, the other minute she is bad. I get that she is struggling to find herself, but I think it's poorly done. She goes from backstabbing Blair, to saying that she doesn't want to do something because she'll hurt Blair. I'm glad that she decided to take her gloves off and finally embrace one side of herself. This can only lead to some pretty big and entertaining cat fights between Blair and Serena.
Even if the storyline is interesting, I'm disappointed in Jenny. I always liked the fact that she was daddy's little girl because the show needed at least one character of the sort. I want Jenny to succeed but I also hope that she crashes and burns so that she learns her choices were not the good ones.
Other tidbits of interest:
- In case you didn't know, some of the Fashion Week footage was shot during this year's New York Fashion Week event.
- It's no surprise that Lily has some skeletons in her closet but what about what was in that envelope near the end of the episode? For sure, what was in there wasn't the nude picture. If you have ideas of what Bart found out about his bride, comment below.
- "Can you just spare me the dramatics for one day?" - Eleanor to Blair. Come on, Eleanor! We don't want Blair to spare you the dramatics as it would make for a pretty boring show!
- How about Little Miss J. and dethroned Queen Blair being BFFs all of a sudden? If you decide to really work together, they could be a force to be reckoned with and rule school together.

that picture had to have been from the night before the wedding. he knew (or i thought i remembered this) about her fling with ruphus and if he didn't know on the show, then i think the picture is what proves it.
i'm not a fan of mean serena. much less attractive.

i just don't know about this show anymore. the characterization is so inconsistent.
as you pointed out, Serena can't decide whether she's good or evil. we got a year of good Serena... one episode of bitchy Serena... and then she was good again until the last seconds of this last episode. multiple personalities or uneven writing?
and then there's the whole Dan and Serena thing. i've asked several people and nobody i've talked to can really explain why Dan and Serena broke up. was it really about the rich/poor thing? i mean... he had to use her name to get saved from the elevator? that did it? really? during the previous episode, they were happy and having fun and then during the blackout episode they suddenly were awkward and needing to talk about their relationship. umm... okay.
and then there's Blair. "i'm nice." "i'm evil." "i'm nice." "i'm evil." maybe her and Serena should share a padded cell at the mental institution.
the only really consistent character on this show is Vanessa (who i fell in love with three seasons ago on "What About Brian", by the way) and she wasn't even in tonight's episode.
anyway, i feel like the uneven writing of the characters is killing this show. you never know where it's going to go next and that's not because it's clever. it's because it's random. Schwartz' other shows ("The OC" and "Chuck") are outshining this one in pretty much every way.

I disagree with the comments about the uneven writing. Serena is a 17-18 year old girl. Girls that age are supposed to be inconsistant. I think Serena has kept her and Blair's friendship for so long because they have always been friends. But she's gotten older and is growing into her own person who doesn't care about Blair and her games anymore. Seeing Serena without Dan's influence shows you just how spoiled and selfish these kids can be.
I love the Jenny storyline the most so far this year and I love the fact that her and Blair appear to be on the road to friendship. Dan and Chuck together was also pretty awesome.
One question, where's Georgina?!? I can't wait for her to return.
