Desperate Housewives: You're Gonna Love Tomorrow (season premiere)

Desperate Housewives
(S05E01) "She's back!" - Lynette about Edie

Even if most of the Desperate Housewives fans knew well in advance that there would be a five-year jump in the season finale, many were left wondering what the hell would happen next. One of the questions Desperate Housewives fans wanted answered most was what made Susan and Mike divorce. Luckily for fans, we've got a pretty good idea what broke Susan and Mike up in this week's season premiere.

Personally, I was one of those Desperate Housewives fans who embraced the five-year jump. I saw it as a way to rejuvenate the series, offer new storylines and get rid of the Kinsman twins. The series premiere delivered on all three counts.

The five-year jumped allowed the writers to move each character forward and offer us new mysteries and flashbacks to chew on. It's clear that this season's main mystery will be why someone should be worried about Dave and who that person is. I think the latter is Mrs. McCluskey and that's somehow she's part of the reason why he has rage issues. It wouldn't surprise me if we learn that Dave used to live on Wisteria Lane and that he married Edie to have a reason to move back there and seek revenge. Even if we only saw Dave for about 10 minutes this week, I find his character intriguing and look forward to seeing more of him and his control over Edie.

Other mysteries will be: Susan and Mike's divorce, Danielle taking Ben back and Bree giving Orson another chance. "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow" showed us that Susan and Mike broke up because of the car accident; they didn't deal with the event the same way and didn't understand why the other one didn't feel the same. Even if their breakup is not a real mystery, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds in the flashbacks. It will also be interesting to see how Danielle got her life back on track, how Bree lived without Ben and how she forgave Orson and took him back (it's probably because she felt lonely but there must be more to that story).

I'm glad that the five-year jump allowed the show to get rid of the Kinsman twins because they are not really good actors. However the twin teens who replaced them are not that much better actors. I'm willing to cut them some slack because having the Scavo kids be teens brings new storylines to the series and offers fun scenes between Lynette and Tom.

If you read my reviews last year, you may recall that I was ready to write off Gabby and Carlos because their storyline was boring. Soccer-mom Gabby is fun to watch so I'm happy that the couple was not written off. Juanita is also another nice addition to the cast. I'm looking forward to seeing Gabby go through pregnancies and what happened for her, a former model, to let her kids go fat.

And what to say about Katherine and Bree other than delicious as always!
