Big Brother 10: Season Finale

Memphis and Dan, last two standing in the BB10 house

(S10E29) Which of the Renegades will win $500,000 on Big Brother 10? It's always a toss-up whether the jury pf pre-evicted houseguests will vote on game play or on personal biases. And, as we've seen this season, there sure have been a heck of a lot of personal issues betwixt hamsters! As a person who must like the misery of others, I have to admit that I enjoyed the explosions within the house this season. I know. I'm a mean, cruel person. Mind you, I wouldn't want to be inside the house in the thick of it. But, hey ... I'm just the voyeur here.

I remember the days when the season and the hype about it was 89 and 90 days. This one was only 71 days -- starting a week late in July and ending mid-September instead of the last week. They were down to 13 houseguests this season. But if memory serves, the first season had only 11. Nonetheless, I think this season with actual strangers in the house and no huge "I'm your sister and you don't know it" or ex-lovers was definitely more to my liking. It was certainly a step up from last season's sex ploy for ratings! Short season that it was, it was still annoying to start off the finale with recaps. Argh.

Jerry goes to jury
As expected, Keesha was still bitter about Memphis while April and Ollie were having thorny snits about Dan. Libra, on the other hand, was pretty impressive tonight with wanting to see Jerry enter the house. "He wasn't the gingerly old man you thought he was," she said. Gingerly? That's not quite the word I'd use, but I got her meaning. So did Renny ... and Renny has had issues all along with "the Colonel." Michelle's just all-around bitter and believes the two evil people are left in the house. Say what? She's no one to talk!

Jerry told them that Dan and Memphis were allied all along and played them all. Huh. Maybe some sort of wisdom comes with age, eh? But Renny, as much as she was my favorite to watch, can be just a tad stubborn. She never liked Memphis and Dan had played up to her so much more. So she thinks Memphis is insensitive and conniving.

But then something happened as the jury discussed who done whom wrong, who was evil and was even more evil ... they started talking about who played the game the best. Oh my, there may be hope for all. Michelle's quandary became "who has gotten through with no blood on his hands (Memphis) and who got blood on his hands (Dan)?" I hate to give her credit because she annoyed me so much this season, but she has a point. Is it a better game to lose things and let everyone else do the dirty work? That was Dan's strategy for the whole first half of the season, but he eventually had to start playing to win. Memphis roughly floated along to the end, never winning anything, never bloodying those hands. Which is truly the better player?

Jury interrogation
Libra asked "Father Dan" what he thought his most strategic move was. He said it was the backdooring of Michelle. I don't like the way he did that, but it was the move which kicked his game into high gear. When April asked Memphis why she should vote for him to win, it became apparent that Memphis isn't the orator Dan is and tends to give non-answers. He mumbled something about they were separated at the start and he's a straight-shooter. Um, okay Memphis. Whatever.

Michelle asked questions of both of the boys. Yes, I said boys. On her trip with Dan, he told her that he wasn't alone in the backdoor plan. She called him on it. He was thrown a bit on that one. But he scrambled and said it was his original idea but wouldn't have worked without the support of his alliance. Then she told Memphis that he had an alliance with her that only benefited him and never won any HOH comps. He again answered with a non-answer kind of reply. She was a tough competitor, he wasn't the first to jump aboard the backdoor, blah-blah.

When Ollie asked Dan why he put Monica's name in his promise to the three-part HOH deal, Dan had an answer. It might paint him as conniving, but he told Ollie that he knew he (Ollie) was playing an emotional game and he had to play on that. Next up, Keesha accused Memphis of having no remorse. He told her it was the hardest thing he had to do in the game and he hopes he hasn't lost a friend. He also said it was the only way he could be sure to remain in the house.

Jerry thought that Dan showed arrogance when winning comps. I say Jerry showed a lot of arrogance and mean-spirited reactions when he won! Dan put on his sincere face and apologized. When he asked Memphis if he would have picked him for the final two, Memphis squeaked out again telling him he didn't know because it didn't happen.

Dan and Memphis then addressed the whole jury to plead their case for the win. Memphis said he played the game like a business plan made to the end, was an asset for their game ... and he really just talked a lot without making much sense. Dan the Orator, did better. Sounding like Coach Dan, he gave them a pep talk for his own self -- everything he did was done for a reason, vote Dan!

The jury votes live
Julie Chen, big-haired once again while wearing a slinky black dress, told the jurors they could each say something to the two winners as they voted. Libra was up first and said "Contrary to popular belief, this is not an easy game. When all else fails, I say 'let's go crazy.' Let the best man win." April was surprisingly graceful and polite, congratulating both of them and telling everyone how much she enjoyed and appreciated the experience.

When she went that way with her speech, I figured the explosions are over. Sigh. You know how I enjoy a good brouhaha! Sure enough, Michelle behaved and told them it had been a crazy ride and congratulations. Ollie gave them a "wassup" then gave them congratulations. He said it's been an unforgettable summer.

Renny was the closest to explosive. She went on and on (and on) about making the decision as a business woman, it's important that people don't take the little things for granted, it's good to get in touch with the human spirit in the game and then really loudly -- "That is why I'm voting for this person!" Man, she could have just blurted out that she was voting for Dan, couldn't she? I think she almost did.

Keesha went nice on both them, congratulating them and saying she thought of both of them like little brothers. But then there's Jerry. He said he made his decision based on kindness shown to him and that he would explain later. As things turned out, he never explained later. I'd kind of like to know. All through all the voting, Dan couldn't shut up. I realize he was excited, but he should have realized it's too late to make brownie points. I found it a bit annoying.

The first four return
Of the four, I applaud Brian for mentioning how the jurors attacked people personally so much. Sure, Dan and Memphis trashtalked like everyone else. But the game of April and even Jerry's game were so personally based. When he brought up Ollie's temper tantrum, I would have loved it if they showed the clip with the edited "red-headed Cabbage Patch kid" in lieu of what the hamsters in the house knew what was said. I'm glad Steven called out Jerry for his bad behavior.

Since the votes were already locked in, the ChenBot let them in on how there was no conspiracy, no plant, but that Dan was America's Player for a week and voted Jessie out. We had to endure a window with Michelle saying "I knew it!" and "I said that" over and over again while Jessie thanked America, mentioning that he at least came back as a gorilla ... VOOT! Angie, one of my early favorites in the game, apparently had nothing to say.

And the winner is ...
It only takes four votes for the win. Julie pulled the keys in the order they were put in. Libra voted for Dan. April voted for Dan (really!). Michelle voted for Dan. Ollie voted for Dan (really). And, it's in the can -- Dan the man with the plan won the half-million. Later on, Julie revealed the vote was unanimous with the other three also voting for Dan to win. So I guess it is possible to throw personal feelings aside and vote on gameplay. It makes me even more curious about Jerry's comment while voting. I guess it would have to be the grandfather/grandson kind of moments in the house.

Dan is the winner - maybe he can buy new clothes

America's favorite juror
Sigh. Give me a break. Julie said it was close between the top two vote-getters. Jerry was the runner-up? Sheesh, talk about sympathy votes. After watching the live feeds all season, I would never choose him for the win. The man has a real mean streak about him. And the winner is Keesha? Sure, some folks may have voted for her to win the $25,000 because they thought she got a raw deal in the end. But you know I watch internet buzz -- more voted for her to win because they wanted to spite April. But, alas ... April's nice and polite doppelganger was there tonight instead of the evil twin and we only saw goodness and light from her on the live show. Renny got rooked, I say.
