In what can only be labeled as the "shock of the decade," Richard Huff of the New York Daily News has reported that Tina Fey will return to Saturday Night Live tonight to play Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee.I've gotta tell ya, as far as the surprise factor is concerned, this ranks right up there with fall of the Berlin Wall and the Challenger explosion. I mean, Fey looks nothing like Palin. That's especially true when she's wearing her glasses; I can't seem to see any resemblance at all between the two at all in that case.
But I guess Lorne Michaels thought that Fey was the best person for the job, and asked her to take some time from knocking out 30 Rock episodes to play this woman. Maybe she'll be able to pull off the impression, though I can't imagine how.

I know you're joking, but, and maybe I'm alone on this one, I really don't see a big resemblance between the two. Both are female and wear glasses, but that's about it...

Really? All the go to 'surprises' and you use a national tragedy like the Challenger?

Agreed. That was my immediate thought too. The Challenger reference was off base and in poor taste.

I debated putting in the Challenger reference, and ultimately decided to keep it in. Oh, well. Guess even 22 years can be "too soon" in some cases.

Oh get over yourselves.
Joel the joke was fine. There are people out there making computer games about Tschernobyl and there died more people because of that than because of the Challenger. There's been another shuttle incident since then, and the "teacher in space" program has been completed this year.
You should focus on the positive aspects of space travel and not over-mystify the incident.
Focus on the Iraq war. That's a national tragedy with deaths a thousandfold higher. And people joke about that one left and right.

Jan Hooks kept coming back to play Hilary Clinton, didn't she? Dan Akryoyd kept coming back to play Bob Dole? I don't see how this is surprising in the least.
Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case, you're right. I didn't see this coming at all.

I don't know how you can't see the resemblence. Their facial structures, cheekbones, etc, are all in exactly the same places. There is no question here that Fey's ancestors mixed it up with Palin's, folks.

I actually disagree with you on this. The two do look alike somewhat, but when you throw in a mention about the Challenger explosion I think you really went to far trying to be funny. Shocked you didn't mention 9/11 as well then.

The important thing to remember is that even with Fey, the material will still be as rubbish as everything else on SNL is.

I'm not going to make any predictions, but I expect this to be about as funny as her minute-long anti-Bush rants that would stop Weekend Update in its tracks. Followed by the whooping of the crowd that says "that wasn't funny, but Bush IS a dick."
Oddly, I am a big 30 Rock fan.

I love it that half the commentators don't get irony and the other half doesn't get funny.

I get the irony AND I get the funny. I just take exception to the Challenger jab. I would take similar exception had Mr. Keller used Chernobyl, 9/11, wars, plane crashes, AIDS, famine, or tsunamis, etc., in his post. I don't see humor in these things.
From a purely linquistic perspective, the juxtoposition of the "surprise" examples is odd - Berlin Wall fall = revolutionary, liberating event; Challenger explosion = tragic, haunting disaster. I don't think either one qualifies as a "surprise" - especially in the comedic sense that Mr. Keller intends them.
I'm with Dorv - Mr. Keller is a talented enough writer to have come up with a better example - he had numerous fields to mine for pure comic gold rather than drilling into a tragic nerve. p.s. - I won't hold it against you Mr. Keller.

Yeah and what did Britney do NOW!
Again, you don't get the funny. You take a point in taking offense. So do us all a favor, get annoyed but leave us alone with you being annoyed because you are a rather insignificant minority who's unable to laugh for relief.

I don't get that Challenger is still tragic for you.
I guess next time Rich should rather take another nifty explosion that comes to mind. Maybe the Hiroshima bomb.
Seriously. Seven people died that day. That's the amount of people who get shot in the DC/Baltimore area every day and nobody pisses themselves because of that or that the ban of firearms has been lifted. That's everyday business but when the nation watches a teacher explode in a fiery ball of flames it leaves a scar so deep you can't joke about it twenty years later.
Maybe I should go over to all those Late Show hosts websites and piss all over them for making fun of the Nazis.
I guess all those "Jews running Hollywood" have a better sense of humor than some of the readers here.
