Warning: the following may cause dizziness, headaches, dry mouth, and severe pain to fans of Arrested Development. Ask your doctor before reading it.So everyone seems to be on board for a big screen version of the already-classic FOX comedy. Everyone except Michael Cera, that is. While doing press for his new indie comedy Nick and Norah's Ultimate Playlist, Cera told The National Post that he hasn't heard anything about a movie version of the show, and that "I don't think I would want to see a movie of the series if I was a fan, anyway." He also doesn't understand why people would want a movie if they can watch the three seasons of the show on DVD.
Ouch.
So, is this just a case of an actor not quite thinking something through and something that he will eventually change his mind about once he thinks about it more (or is talked into it by other cast members of the show)? Or does it sound like he's really not interested in doing the show because they had a good three seasons and now he wants to move on and do other things before he's typecast?
If the people behind Arrested Development really want to do a movie they better get on it quickly. Like anything else, the more time goes by the less likely it is we'll see it happen. I'm still not convinced a big screen movie is the way to go. Maybe a TV movie is what they should focus on.

his fate of being typecast was set in stone long before this interview ever took place.
I wonder if its a money thing... you have to think that his bank account (and pay scale) is the one that has increased the most since the show ended. You'ld have to think he would get paid more being the lead in one of his own movies then in an ensemble cast (that cant have that crazy of a budget).

Saying it in my best Martin Lawrence voice "oh hell naw!!" He didn't explicitly say he didn't want to do the movie so I don't get the headline, but I also don't understand his logic that a fan wouldn't want to see a movie of based on the series. Maybe its because Judd Aptow has an iron grip on the comedy market, and maybe its because Jessica Walter in 90210 gave us a serious jonesing for Lucille Bluth. I think the reason Michael Cera doesn't want to revisit Arrested Development is because he can't escape George Michael Bluth.

Agreed! A big screen movie would be a moderate sucess. And as far as the bottom dollar goes, they could make way more money with a tv movie and eventual DVD sales. And possibly even a continuing franchise?
I mean who wouldn't want to see a spinoff movie franchise entitled Gob and Tobias: The European Chronicles?

They should replace him with a lookalike and have it be a running gag through the movie. Then at the end the whole family realizes it's a lookalike.

I really want to see an AD movie but only if everyone from the original cast is on board and excited to do the film. Michael Cera has been working consistently in some of the most critically lauded comedies in years (Juno, Superbad) and he is definitely carving himself a nice space in Hollywood. So, as much as he may have loved the show after so many years and scripts and now success for him it'd be difficult for anyone to get back into the mode of playing a part you've long since outgrown.
If they write something fantastic and everyone else is on board I bet he'll find his way into the project. They may have to pay more for him than they expected but I know that he's got to be eyeing a slot as a possible Ghostbuster since he's a part of the Apatow crew and there are definitely more roles for him out there than anyone else in the AD cast.

Actually, this might make an Arrested Development movie more interesting. Some of their best jokes came from mocking the things various behind-the-scenes forces made them due (such as replacing an actor/writing off their character).

I totally agree with him. Come to think of it, why would I ever want to see another Michael Cera movie since we already have Superbad and Juno and soon we'll have Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. He pretty much plays the same character in each movie.
Okay, that's probably a little low but I couldn't resist. Even after reading this I still really like the guy and I hope he changes his mind. I can understand him not wanting to be typecast. I hope they move on without him if he doesn't come back. GM should be in college at about this time anyway and for me the focus of this show has been Michael and the other adults.

This little bastard will be in the movie considering the show is the only reason he has a career.

Seriously, have the bodysnatchers been over to your place or what's going on with you?
I find myself agreeing to what you say all the time. Eery.

I'm pretty sure Michael Cera is just fucking with people. He knows that there is an audience that wants it badly.

Hey, new fan as of earlier this year. Arrested Development still feels as fresh as a daisy, and a movie would be a wonderful touch. I think if those involved don't do it now/soon, they will kick themselves for the missed opportunity in a few years time.
It's never hyperbole to call this the best comedy of the decade, possibly of all time.

Maybe I'd take his statement as gospel if all his characters weren't various incarnations of George Michael. I really do hate when people try to insult their defining role. George Michael was what made us love Michael Cera...don't forget where you came from, and as a fan of Arrested Development, LET ME TELL YOU, I CANNOT WAIT FOR AN ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT MOVIE!!

It could just be his Canadian humility talking.
Typecast? He only plays one type of character.
