(S01E01) "I knew someone would come eventually." -- Dr. Walter Bishop
This is my second time watching Fringe -- I posted an Early Look review a couple of weeks ago -- and it's just as engaging to me now as the first time. Tonight, I focused more on the relationships of the characters, whereas the first time, I was fixated on the sci-fi paranormal elements. My thoughts:
Similarities to Lost. I admit I was a little bummed when I saw the first scene. A plane incident? Really, J.J. Abrams? Are you that fixated on planes? But the scene truly does work to set the tone for the series. Why? Because you've got all these people trapped in the sky. Something weird happens and their bodies go haywire. The plane lands safely on autopilot, and the agents find the grisly remains of their bodies. It sets up a whole bunch of questions. What happened? Why did it happen? Who is doing it? Where are they now? And how can Olivia and her team make it stop?
The set-up. They've packed just about as much into a pilot as humanly possible. We've got the skewed romance between the FBI agents (which might not be over, even though one of them is technically dead), the "fringe science" around which everything else revolves, a looming government conspiracy with a robotic-armed woman, an emotionally unstable father and a distant son, an outsider who's being reluctantly pulled into a world he'd rather avoid, and Olivia, the glue that holds all of it together. And then there's the cow...
The cow. Did it seem a little over the top to you? I'm trying to decide if I appreciate the presence of the cow, or if it just seems weird to have a cow in the laboratory. Really, it's basically there for comic relief.
Suspending disbelief. I know the show is all about weird science, but I can't help scratching my head over the way some things went down. No, not the dream sequence. I'm actually ok with that. It's the fact that they had this ancient lab up and running at light-speed, even though it had been collecting dust for years (and why was it still there?). Also, how was Olivia able to recover from her drug-induced dream state and spring back into action so quickly? The cocktail they gave her had LSD in it, for cripes sake, yet she was up and lucid in no time flat.
The characters. With her furrowed brow and husky voice, Anna Torv has just the right personality for both her job AND this series. She's tough, but also vulnerable, as her first scene with John shows. Olivia, Peter and Walter are such different characters, and it will be fun to see them form an alliance of sorts to figure out what's going on. Joshua Jackson has that every-guy quality that makes me really like him -- ok, fall in love with him a little bit. He's mild-mannered until things don't go his way, and then he unleashes the fire. In contrast, Olivia seems more even-tempered, not as willing to fly off the handle as Peter. John Noble as the kooky, emotionally scarred mad scientist is fun, too.
What a complete thrill to see Blair Brown again. I loved her in The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, but wow, I'm feeling old, because she's showing some age and so am I. But the fact that her character is covering up something and she's not all she appears to be -- it's intriguing. Likewise, the jury's still out on Homeland Security Agent Phillip Broyles. He seems on the up and up, but is he really...?
The special effects. I'm completely mesmerized by translucent skin you can see through. I don't think it's appropriate for an 8 p.m. show, but is there really a "family viewing hour" anymore? Not really, and anyway, the show moves to 9 p.m. next week. I also love the little 3D location markers between scenes and the pre-commercial visuals of frogs, leaves, apples, handprints and so on. Those are cool, even though they're Lost-like.
Overall, I'm loving Fringe so far and can't wait to see what happens next. What did you all think? Intrigued? Disappointed? Can't wait for the next episode? Couldn't care less?

The show was boring and really predictable. Unless it becomes more character-focused it'll be done soon.

I thought this was a great start to a series that has to potential to fill a much needed/missed niche on TV. I am hooked

I thought they did an absolute horrible job with the translucent skin. Every time they showed it I kept thinking, "if he does have translucent skin, why can't you see any internal organs moving around inside?" I kept looking for muscles moving along bones or lungs inflating or a heart beating or SOMETHING. But alas, I never saw a thing.
Also what did you mean by "Those are cool, even though they're Lost-like."? I thought they were pretty cool BECAUSE they reminded me of Lost.

Were you watching in HD?
I saw organs. Lots of them.
If you don't watch HD, of course your not going to see them.
Watching Fringe in SD = Epic Fail.

Yes I was watching on my 52 inch 1080p TV, thanks.
And I never said I didn't see organs. Just that they weren't moving at all. Which, to me, ruined the whole idea of them being there in the first place.
oh and...
not knowing the difference between your and you're = epic fail.

From what I saw I liked, I missed the first 30 mins, which was the most important part of the show, so I don't know a lot, but I did catch a Lost moment when Agent Dunham went to that place where one of the victims worked and the secretary said something something and good luck...and I was thinking did she mean to say Namaste? I hope FOX puts it up online ASAP.

Nacho - Regarding the Lost-like things, I guess I was just looking for things that would set Fringe apart from Lost. In that respect, some of the little similarities made me feel like they were just phoning it in, so to speak, instead of creating something completely different from Lost, but just as compelling.

They spent 10 million dollars on that?
I hate the main female character, she is useless, the dad and son are good through.
The first hour of the show I found rather boring, it finally started to pick up towards the end and could show promise as a series.
And it's a sci-fi show, but I love how a plane could just land by itself. I think I'll set my car to cruise control and not have to worry about anything.

Recent planes can actually land by themselves, so I don't know why u find it so outrageous.

I understand you had a difficult suspension of disbelief with the airplane. I just thought you'd be interested to see these considering the car statement.

and in the not too distant future you can see how you'd be able to set your cruise control and do nothing. When viewed through the lens of this technology it's not too tough to believe a plane could land itself.

i'm with you on the female lead...she had the same vaguely anxious look on her face the entire episode. except when she got angry, and then she looked like she was anxious and angry. ugh.
the show overall was...ok...but i'm not sure i'll be revisiting it. then again, i didn't like alias...or lost (i was into it for several episodes, but it, ahem, lost me after that)...so i suppose jj abrams just doesn't do it for me.

The 3d text thing has been done before by Heroes. I know you said that it was the first time you'd seen in in your Early Look.

I thought it was amazing!
A lot of Lost and Alias Tie-ins (1 child found unaged, 46 more found since = 47 = Rambaldi, the whole woke from a coma and wrote coordinates - Nadia (Sorry Alias Freak Here!))
I thought some of the acting was kinda strange but i think its that whole building the characters thing that threw that off. I can see this being my new cult following show.

I paused the show a couple of times, and was considering not finishing the episode. the last time i paused it was seriously 30 seconds before the woman (spacing on her name or position) revealed her robotic arm. After that im hooked and can't wait for episode two.

Here in Central California, we never got Fringe! One station that was supposed to carry it showed nothing but infomercials. The other showed "Two and a Half Men" and a couple of other sitcoms. I have no idea what's going on, but I'm very frustrated.

Very good. I'm intrigued. It reminds me of X-Files, Torchwood, and Lost all mixed and matched.
Love the cow and all the other little comedic things inserted to make it not completely drama-fied.
