(S05E01) "Our next film is Medellin - the ultra-violent story of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar starring Vincent Chase in a fat-suit in bad make-up that makes him look like the love child of Jiminy Glick and a case of Twinkies." - Richard Roeper
Ouch. It's been six months since Cannes, Medellin is getting a straight-to-DVD release, and people are still talking about it. One of the worst films of the year. I can't say that I'm surprised. Considering how last season ended and what we've come to expect from Entourage, this felt less like a season premiere and more like just another episode. Vincent Chase can only stay down and out hidden in Mexico for so long before the allure of his almost dead career came calling.
That being said, I would have had a hard time making the same decision. $79 a day got Vince all that? I'm living in the wrong hemisphere. But it had to be done. Six months of living in exile with nothing but Turtle and a beard can't be a forever thing.
There was lot of good stuff going on though. Just because Vince was gone didn't mean the world stopped moving. Eric's agency (The Murphy Group) has really started to take off and now that he and Anna Faris are done, I'm anxious to see what he can do for his newest client Charlie (Bow Wow). It'd be really great to see him take someone from nothing to the top, especially since that's essentially what Vince did for him. As it is, Charlie has already bombed in five screen tests now, including one for Cold Case. Eric is going to need to do something fast to boost his new guy's confidence.
The biggest issue (and it's the same one when Eric dealt with Anna) is how E plans to balance his time between Vince and his other clients. Even though Charlie seems to be the forgiving type, getting blown off for a phone call or meeting with Vince is going to get annoying fast. However, Vince does have some issues. No offers in six months is not a good thing and now that Davies spilled the beans to Ari that Carl was just using Vince to get Emile Hirsch cheaper... well, still no offers in six months then. But this repositions the series right back to where it started with Vince trying to make a name for himself. It's what this show does best, so no sense in messing with it.
Drama's story was by far the weakest sub-plot of the ep. I know his whole aversion to being shot from the right side (his "bad" side) has come up before, but still - not really that funny. However, I did love the cameo from Ben Silverman and I will be anxious to see what the new poster for Five Towns looks like because the last one was great.
More thoughts...
-
I already mentioned him, but I hope we see more of Adam Davies. I love listening to him and Ari argue. And speaking of Ari, it was great to hear him yell again. ("F*ck you Yoko!")
-
Rex Lee got added to the opening credits as part of the cast. Good for him. This show wouldn't be the same without Lloyd.
-
Now that Carl has duped Vince and Ari (and not counting Turtle and Drama's fish/golf club retaliation), what are they going to do to get back at him? Carl, by the way, is played by Kim Coates, who you may have recognized from last week's Sons of Anarchy premiere.
-
Not that I expected to hear anything about it, but I'm guessing that Walsh isn't going to be making Silo.
-
Add this one to Drama's resume: high school swimmer with alopecia on 7th Heaven. You've got to be kidding me.
-
Drama is still dating Jacqueline! Honestly, that's great. The guy deserves a break. That "Tweet! Chirp!" thing needs to stop ASAP though.
-
Do we know that Emile Hirsch is definitely going to make Danger Beach now? What if Davies doesn't give up his client at the cut rate? This could end up being Vince's comeback I suppose.
-
Who's Eric's receptionist? What do I recognize her from? The little old lady?
Overall, a really solid premiere, but like I said earlier - it didn't feel like a premiere. Just another episode of Entourage and they're all solid. The boys are back.

You actually do live in the same hemisphere as Mexico. Unless you're in England?

Hemisphere translates into "half a sphere". You can cut the earth in infinite ways, but for the sake of the argument you chose to cut it at a meridian and he chose to cut it at the equator.
So you are both right and both wrong. If you don't specify what hemi-sphere you mean.
But then again Jonathan is still wrong, because I doubt he meant a cut that separates Mexico from the US. Walsh was on a beach in Mexico, wasn't he? (though it looked like Hawaii to me due to the Lost footage I saw in the past).

the equator is MUCH farther south than mexico. so it's still wrong...but anyhooooo...good episode - the 'high tide' issue will most assuredly come back - maybe turtle gets a screen writing credit after lawsuits are threatened?

Good episode. I am quite excited to see how this season will play out.
Wasn't Vince flat broke at the end of the season - how can he even afford $79 a day?

Yep. Great episode. Maybe the best season opener so far.
It's great to see these characters develop and now I have no idea where its going to end up by the end of the season.
P.S. I hope we don't see Billy. That is a very tired storyline.

Even a huge flop can make a few million...look at Gigli! People will buy a film just to see how bad it is. I liked the episode, but didn't love it. Happy to see Rex Lee getting some credit, he's one of the best characters on the show. I hope Billy Walsh is out of there, he was an annoying character and obviously a bad influence on Vince. I was hoping Drama would be fired for his stunt, cause an out-of-work Drama is a funny Drama.

Vince won't be cast in Danger beach but they will steal his new title of High Tide thus creating a big problem for our guys.

So this is what that lazy a$$ Silverman is doing with his time. Better enjoy it while you can pal. NBC has been very generous in not kicking your useless carcus to the curb. So far ...

Not sure I'm up for any of those 3 poll answers. But I agree with one of the other commenters that the whole "High Tide" thing will probably become an issue.

Maybe my tastes have changed but I really didn't find it that funny. Ari had a few good moments but that was about it.

Women are so dissed in this episode that I was offended. Every one of them was a thing to be screwed or, in the case of the receptionist, insulted as a Golden Girl. Entourage used to balance the 'he-man women haters' schtick with smart women like Carla Guguino and Debi Mazar. This episode lacked balance...
And was anyone else pissed at Vince's hedonism? If he's such a great actor, he could have gone back to NYC and done play on Broadway and proved his worth. Laying on a beach and waiting for a great role is egoism to the nth degree!
One last thought, the DVD porno in the car was disgusting. Are all men so base or just the Entourage men? (I know, it's just a comedy, but really...)

Turtle watching a porno in a car? And you act surprised?????
I think you need to take a chill pill. It was one episode without a strong female (unless you count the one that told Drama to chill out)

I love that Rex Lee's inclusion in the opening credits is a superimposition on the "Roxi" club. Cute, to say the least, and much better than Perry Reeves replacing "Cinerama."

Does anyone know what song was playing when Vince rode away from the beach after talking to E for the first time? It's a reggae song that's been stuck in my head all week and I can't find a title anywhere
