The show Ghost Whisperer is no stranger to major changes in its status quo. They wrapped up their first season by having Jennifer Love Hewitt's Melinda Gordon lose her best friend Andrea (Aisha Tyler), only to have to deal with her spirit to launch the second season. It made for an emotionally powerful episode and a tragedy that drove Melinda into that new year.Michael Ausiello, who is generally pretty spot-on with his rumors, dropped a pretty big bombshell of some possible happenings early on in this upcoming season. Now I've already admitted on this very site that Ghost Whisperer is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I've had the joy of growing up with Jennifer Love Hewitt from her days on Party of Five and she's still just too gosh-darned cute to stop watching now. And dammit if the writers don't know how to pull the heartstrings in almost every episode, too. But now ... well, we'll talk about it after the jump.
If you came over here, then you know you are now in the "Spoiler Zone." It's your own fault if you don't want to know. The rumors are that Melinda will be losing another someone close to her, and no I'm not talking about Cathryn Manheim's character or her kid. She just might become a widow. That's right, her faithful and loyal husband Jim, played by David Conrad, may be the next major character to die.
Now, I'm not under the impression that the formula of Ghost Whisperer has become stale yet, because it's driven so much by human stories. But obviously someone is, because this is a major change to the status quo. Jim has been Melinda's rock throughout all the craziness she's had to endure and with Jay Mohr's Professor Payne also taking a sabbatical to try his luck at his own show (again), Melinda's looking to have to tread those murky waters alone.
I would imagine that Jim would be a recurring ghost, and I could even see him refusing to go into the light because he insists on staying with Melinda. I'm not sure how long such a situation could be milked, but it could make for some interesting television. In fact, the possibilities story-wise for such a move are pretty great, but to lose Conrad and Mohr at the same time pretty much leaves Manheim's Delia as the only support structure Melinda has.

I'm not gonna lie - I would be very sad if Leo from Relativity - I mean, Jim - were killed off.
But, it could make for an interesting set of circumstances.
A little bit like that James Caan/Sally Field movie from the 80s, the one where he died, and refused to leave her side. I loved that movie.

Wow- I've heard this rumor for a while now- but seriously, they pull that, I'm probably done with the show. They can't kill off Leo- uh, Jim- it'd just be too much. Even if he sticks around in ghostly form (as this would kind of kill the whole baby story line unless she manages to quickly get pregnant and then he's gone).
But, on the flip side, it does seem like she'd need some ghostly help from someone to deal with what's below the town- it just better come from somewhere else.

What is up with that? Is the actor looking to leave the series? Dude, you kiss Jennifer Love Hewitt in every episode, if you don't want that job I'll take it. Now if that's not the case, and its merely for plot purposes and shaking up the series, its still a bad decision. The show is not the same without the loving Jim to comfort Melinda every time she gets freaked out or having trouble convincing a ghost to "step into the light". I admit, I can't believe I actually care one way or the other. What's next, they going to say, Melinda herself was a earthbound spirit the whole time and just never crossed over? Wouldn't that be an intresting twist?

Awesome. The Jim character is one of the blandest, least interesting on TV.

It's not the first season they are talking about killing Jim. I really like the idea of having Jim become a ghost and hang around because he wants to help his wife. Imagine the possibilities. We could see the ghost world from Jim's perspective. Maybe Melinda will agree to not help him since she can't cope the loss, etc. Maybe he could even be lured to the "dark side" (or at least tempter) and Melinda must try to make him pass through the light.

Melinda and Jim are one of the few healthy, happy couples on TV. I like to see a good relationship **work** on tv once in awhile. I'll be seriously disappointed if the producers kill off Jim.

I agree, I like their relationship and hope that this is just a pr stunt and not a direction that the show is going to go in.
I'm one of those who watch (and have it on my dvr list) and enjoy it and the progressive mythology.

I hope it is just a rumor. I don't think I would watch any more if they killed off Jim.
Didn't it happen on another CBS show "Close to Home" at the beginning of the second season (kill off the very cute, supportive husband). I don't think it even finished the second season.

Perhaps they will move the Jamie Kennedy character to the other side. He is, after all, supposed to be a helper, isn't he?
