On a regular basis, we get press releases sent to us here in the palatial penthouse suites of TV Squad. Most of them are your standard write-ups about a upcoming series or television event that can't be missed. Others, while they seem to print all of the necessary information, actually have an underlying subtext to them, arousing curiosity about what the networks and/or studios are not revealing.
Take the recent press release from BBC America that mentioned the beginning of filming on the newest series of Torchwood. The press release mentioned the subtitle of the series, Torchwood: Children of Earth, and that this newest series (actually, mini-series ... only five episodes) will focus on one single adventure that has the team battling for the future of the human race. The release also mentioned the return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones.
And Noel Clarke? Well, it looks like Mickey Smith's return to the Earth he was born on was short-lived. Clarke is currently working on a new movie called Doghouse, currently in production and filming in London.
What this means is the Torchwood team will remain a trio for the near future. This is too bad. Despite the fact that both Mickey and Martha could be annoying at times they would have been an interesting fit in the Torchwood team. Doesn't mean I won't watch, though. Look for the new episodes of Torchwood to premiere on BBC America sometime in 2009.

Too bad about Martha and Mickey--I was kind of looking forward to them being around again. I wonder what they are up to with the (mini) season. I look forward to the return of Torchwood, though.

Mickey and Martha's Torchwood affiliation was never anything more than fan speculation. I hope it stays that way. I have nothing against the characters -- I just think Torchwood can and should move in a new direction.
It's very promising to see Peter Capaldi's name on the cast list for S3. The man can do no wrong.

Fan speculation? Sure, but at least it was justified off of the closing lines of those characters in the Doctor Who season finale.

Not only that, but with one being a doctor and the other a computer expert (at least what I witnessed on some episodes of Doctor Who), they would have been a perfect fit for Torchwoods current job vacancies.

With only 5 episodes, the focus needs to be on the relationships between Jack, Ianto and Gwen. I'm VERY happy that it seems Mickey and Martha won't be thrown into the mix.

Well Martha was actually going to join the show, but instead bounced to the UK version of Law and Order.
