Naked Cowboy snags a reality show

Naked cowboyIf you've ever been to New York City, chances are you've found yourself in the neon Disneyland of Times Square. If you've ever been to Times Square, then you've almost definitely run into The Naked Cowboy. The Naked Cowboy is neither naked, nor a cowboy. Rather, he is a dude who hangs out in the middle of Times Square in a pair of tighty-whities and charges tourists for pictures as he bangs away on an acoustic guitar. He's been doing this for years in all kinds of weather, so for his trouble, he's getting his own reality show.

And you went to law school, loser.

The Cowboy's show, brought to us by the producers of the upcoming Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Championship Wrestling, is described as basically an American Idol for street performers. However, prospective contestants needn't start on the song and dance lessons: this is purely style over substance.

Much like The Cowboy's act doesn't involve talent, he's not really looking for that in his contestants. Instead he says, "I'm looking for character more than anything. You could be the greatest musician in the world, but if you stand in jeans and a T-shirt next to me, no one will notice you." So I guess his advice is to ... wear a thong? I don't really know.

Actually, that doesn't even guarantee success in his cut-throat world of street performing. I used to have a job that put me out in Times Square a lot, so I would run into this guy pretty often (he's kind of a jerk, by the way). At one point, a Naked Cowgirl came along. She wore a teeny-tiny red spandex skirt and blue sequined pasties. She seemed sad and hungry and he didn't like the competition, so she only lasted about a week. Perhaps the folks on his show will fair better.
