(M9) "It's just the same as drinking water... right?" - Mike
All these guys do is eat, sleep, drink, and get laid. Occasionally, they fight fires. Seeing as how they do it so infrequently, I can't say that I'm surprised that Mike (still the Probie in this episode) forgot to fill the cooler with drinking water before going out on a call. All Mike does is eat, sleep, drink, get laid, and forget stuff.
I think this may have been the shortest minisode yet, but then again, there wasn't much to it. After finishing off their latest blaze, the guys discover that the cooler is empty. Moments later, they're saved when a Tastee Freeze truck pulls up. Who doesn't like ice cream?
Some thoughts...
- Leave it to Denis "No Cure For Cancer" Leary to bust out the AIDS jokes. Admit it. You laughed. And for the record, I would not want to drink "AIDS water." Or anything from an NYC hydrant for that matter.
- Didn't Mike realize how nasty the hydrant water smelled/tasted as he was shoving his head into the stream?
- This may be a minor continuity error, but was Mike still the Probie when Needles was around? Wasn't Jerry still Chief? Or was Mike still probationary even after Jerry's suicide? I can't remember.
- Needles likes strawberry shortcake ice cream bars. Somehow, that seems appropriate.
Only one more Rescue Me minisode to go. Next week is the finale, "Smoke." And the week after that? The Shield is back. Thank you FX.

I'm not sure why you think Mike was the probie in this episode. They didn't call him Probie, they called him Mike, which suggests to me that he certainly wasn't a probie. Also, as you point out, he wasn't the probie when Needles was around anyway.

You're right John, I thought I heard someone say "Probie" at one point, but I just re-watched it. Good catch.

Cut him some slack, John. This episode was almost three minutes long -- there was a lot to take in!
