I'm hesitant to get my hopes up, because there's always talk of TV shows making a leap to the big screen. Whether it's a great idea, as with Arrested Development, or a horrific one like Friends: The Movie, it seems that as soon as a show ends, the silver-screen talks begin. Regardless, I just about peed my pants when I read that a Veronica Mars movie may actually become a reality.Even though Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas has two pilots in the works (Cupid and Outrageous Fortune), he still hasn't forgotten the little detective show that is singlehandedly responsible for people no longer asking him if he's the dude from Matchbox Twenty. Apparently, Thomas's production office is located on the same lot where VM star Kristen Bell is currently shooting Heroes and the two sat down for a little chat.
Thomas confirms that "Kristen and I ran into each other, and we did discuss a Veronica movie." He even said that he's had a few conversations with VM executive producer, Joel Silver. Lest you think these are just idle chats between old friends, Thomas assures us that "as soon as I have any free time, [the movie is] my top priority."
So really, all I have to say about this is "Holy. Crap." It actually sounds like serious talk. I'd love to see a Veronica Mars movie, despite the fact that the logical part of me isn't convinced that it would actually do much business. After all, fans clamored for a Firefly movie, and Serenity didn't exactly take the box office by storm.
However, a Veronica Mars movie would have something that Serenity didn't have: Kristen Bell. As awesome as Nathan Fillion is, he's not a known quantity. Bell, on the other hand, is a cute blond who got half-naked in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a movie that people actually saw. Plus, her return to Heroes is probably going to inspire another wave of geek love toward her.
If the movie is marketed right and tries to get a broader audience than the six or so people who watched it on The CW, I have a feeling it could actually work. However, I freely admit that I often reside in the land of delusion when it comes to Veronica Mars. Am I the only one, or do you think seeing Mars on the big screen is a good idea too?

Though Serenity wasn't a box office hit, it more than turned a profit when you take into account the international market and the DVD sales. =)

I hope this is true! I love Veronica Mars but let me tell you season 3 I did not like at all and need more closure than the season 3 finale. I hope that Rob Thomas would write the movie for the fans rather than try to market it to get alot of people to watch it (ex. season 3).

I'd consider myself a huge fan and feel the answerless finale was inkeeping with the tone of the show.
Still, would love to see more :D

wow.. i'd love to see VM back! Nice comparison with Firefly/Serenity - I wonder how exactly that movie got greenlit though, especially since Fireflys numbers were not exactly stellar (ha) either..?

In the case of "Serenity" it was a combination of "Firefly" DVD sales and a shift from Fox (boo, hiss) to Universal.

And didn't Rob already do Cupid? I remember he did, because I was in high school when it was on. And Jeremy Piven was in it, as Cupid. I even e-mailed him, about one of his books [yes he was an author first] and asked him if he was the same guy who was doing Cupid. He responded, but that was almost ten years ago.

I doubt this would happen, but I'd love to see a VM TV Movie. However, not in the vein of the Brady's or Hallmark films, but what cable or British TV does. Unfortunately, no one puts a lot of money or writing effort into TV movies on the network side and since CW killed it, they probably wouldn't put money into a film to tie up lose ends with VM or other shows they canceled without a satisfying conclusion i.e. Gilmore Girls -

I think Gilmore Girls ended perfectly considering the mess the show had become, it was a wonderful ending.
However The CW didn't cancel it, it just ended, that's all. The CW wanted at least a 13 episode season 8 but actress who plays Rory didn't want to do it.

I just hope they ignore seasons 2 and 3. I can't believe how bad season 2 was.

Oh, man, I am TOTALLY in for a VM movie--but only if Keith and Logan and Wallace and Vinnie and Cliff and Weevil and Lamb (yeah, I know he's dead--that was a shite move) are in, too. But no Duncan. He was a pill.
@litehousebeacon: yes, Rob Thomas did the original Cupid. He's been given a chance to redo it, though, with a new cast. Which I also think is a shite move. Piven made that show.

Let's hope the movie gets made, is pushed by its film company, and comes out with lots of fanfare. Once it exist doesn't matter to me if I'm the only one in the theatre. I can say Rob made this movie for me, just like I can say Whedon made "Serenity" for me, I don't need to be one out of a 100 millon, I'll see it by myself.

If you've seen the DVD versoin of what the Veronica Mars FBI would have looked like, you wouldn't be so hot for a movie. That 15-20 minutes (whatever it was) was horrible, just horrible.
And a movie would have to move away from school, and probably wouldn't be able to shoehorn in all the characters from the show. Buy the DVDs and wallow in your memories of the show, and not destroy it with dreams of a movie (which would probably suck anyway).

Although hand-to-God, I'd pick an Arrested Development movie over it anyday.
Can some movie executive people please greenlight these two movies? They'll do well, in particular AD, which as a comedy can appeal to a broader market rather than its (pretty massive) fanbase.
UK poster here and I can promise you there's a market for an AD movie here. It's many people's favourite show.

Huge Veronica Mars fan. Huge Arrested Development fan. Hopefully neither one will ever be a movie. They had their time. It's over. Watch reruns if you must (don't understand why you would...but whatever) but please let us remember these shows fondly. A movie version would just cheapen the whole thing...
