I can't decide if this is good news or bad news. Moonlight star Alex O'Loughlin is staying at CBS. Unless you've been in another galaxy for the past year, you know that the Aussie actor cultivated an enormous fan base with his role as vampire P.I. Mick St. John on CBS' Moonlight. The uproar caused by the cancellation of the show in May can still be heard, well, in another galaxy.
At the Television Critics Association press tour in July, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the popularity of Moonlight was due in large part to O'Loughlin's fan base. So I can appreciate the fact that CBS wants to keep him around. But it's what they'll do with him that has me worried.
Under the one-year talent holding deal, O'Loughlin will star in a new series project for CBS to be developed by producer Mark Gordon, whose ABC Studio-based company is behind such series as ABC's Grey's Anatomy, Lifetime's Army Wives, and CBS' Criminal Minds.
It'll make my blood curl if they saddle him with some wimpy Grey's Anatomy-type show. I'm not dissing the show - I'm a huge fan, even during its crummiest seasons. But I'd hate to see O'Loughlin land in some milquetoast ensemble show when he clearly has the chops to headline a unique, fresh series.
You know, like Moonlight. Now if they could just create a show like that for him to star in...

Thanks for an early morning "yum!" pic of AO. What a hunk! I do hope CBS gives him something interesting rather than formulaic. I'd be first in line to see it!

Or CBS can just give Moonlight a second series ready made with millions of fans worldwide willing to follow. They get to keep Alex with CBS, we get our show back, it's a win-win situation.

As a loyal Moonlight fan, I pray that Alex and his new show are treated right this time. He deserves CBS's full support, especially in their promotional efforts. He's an amazing actor, and I can't wait to see his new project. I'll follow him anywhere, any time.

So many of us fell for Mick St. John...
Signing Alex to a one year contract is fine. After all, the man has to pay his bills like everyone else, but it in no way makes up for the fact that CBS killed an interesting and exciting show; MOONLIGHT.

Thank you for this wonderful article. I completely agree with your comment - if only they could find a show like Moonlight for him to star in. Alex O'Loughlin is a wonderful actor and he certainly was a large part of the appeal of Moonlight. However, it was his acting together with the other cast members, plus the great writers, the story lines, in fact the total package that was Moonlight that I believe drew in so many fans. With the current interest in the vampire genre being generated by Twilight many other networks including ABC and HBO are working on shows in this genre so I was more than a little surprised to see the lack of support for a second season of Moonlight. I wish Alex and the rest of the Moonlight cast the very best in finding work in the industry but must admit, that in my ideal world, that would involve many more seasons of Moonlight.

I'll be very happy to see Alex again on T.V.....but I'm hoping it's something different just as Moonlight was different and that he makes a wise choice. Hopefully the network will appreciate his talent, work ethic and commitment and not make a fool of him like they did in May.
I wish him the best of luck because he'll need it since the witch still likes to link her name with his.
I miss Moonlight and all the characters involved...there will never be another romance like Mick&Beth and Mick's snarky friend Josef

I'm hoping they are thinking of a mid-season replacement with Moonlight. With all the vampire buzz out there, what better way to bring it back. They had better treat him with the respect he deserves and as talented as he is, he should be headlining his own show.

Alex, as Mick, in Moonlight is the BEST use of his talents! CBS had treasure in Moonlight! I also want the entire cast back in Moonlight, because Mick needs Beth, Josef, Coraline, etc.

Now that they have Alex tied up all they need to do is bring back Sophia and Jason and give us more Moonlight. I didn't watch Moonlight just for Alex, and much as I think he is wonderful I won't watch him or anything on CBS. It isn't a boycott, it is just my choice. With the huge surge in vampire shows, it seems pretty strange to cancel a wonderful vampire show and put the star vampire in mortal role. Does that make sense?

Ohhhhhh Please Mr. Gordon let Alex's magic shine through on the screen!! Let him make the character his own and give him creative control. The man is pure magic and he will make you lots of money if you just let him lead the way!! I will be looking forward to seeing him again.

I just don't get Hollywood. Let Moonlight continue. The vampire craze is huge. Moonlight is unique, special and loved by a very large intact fan base. Why waste time trying to recreate what is already there. The viewers want Moonlight with its whole cast and original story line. Bring Moonlight back, please!

I'm glad for Alex (I think; I hope this is a good deal for him.) and I'd watch him read the newspaper, so I'll watch this new show too. But I hope he gets it in his new contract that CBS must actually promote this show, and I don't mean just running commercials during Ghost Whisperer. Perhaps this show could be about an immortal with a friend named Josef and an attraction to a lovely human girl...and I hear vampires are all the rage right now.

Thanks for the article. Great for Alex to be signed on for the next year. Moonlight is the only answer for why Alex has the fan base he has now. Moonlight fans know that Mick St. John is the Alex role that works, so keep that role alive. We can wait until midseason to open the door on Moonlight again.

I just don't understand Nina Tassler and the other guys at CBS. Like someone said, why create something new when they already have a wonderful show that has a large fanbase?? Nina was so wrong when she said that we were all about Alex (well most of us she said). It was Moonlight that we loved, the cast, the chemistry, the romance, everything about Moonlight, not just Alex O'Loughlin. They all created characthers that were loved. If Mrs. Tassler could just get that into her head! We want Jason, Sophia, Shannyn and all of them back too!

In my opinion, Ms. Nina has it backwards. I started Moonlight because the STORY was DIFFERENT than the usual - and it interested me! I liked Alex AFTER - when I saw how he made 'Mick' into a real-feeling being! I can't stand the regular plodding detective shows CBS likes to keep, and what captured me about Moonlight is that it WASN'T one of these. I resent how Ms. Nina treated and spoke of the Moonlight fans, and I won't forget that!
I just don't understand why when Moonlight was a growing winner, seeing as the New Wave is Vampires, and they had the Original right there in their hands... that they canned it when all it needed was a decent full season to grow, and has millions of fans globally that would watch it no matter what day or time-slot. Somehow it seems a waste of money to me - to throw out something already growing - and start all over from scratch with something that may work or may crash... than to keep, culture, and adequately promote something that's doing well and getting better.
I'll tell you about what I think here - I'm not one to like Alex cause he's young, cute, and verile... I like him as a PERSON and I like his technique that was shown off so well in Moonlight. I have sons his age, and I don't rob the cradle... I wish Ms. Tassler understood that, cause it sounds like she doesn't. If the film Ms. Tassler places him in is not to my taste - I won't watch it.
In my opinion, CBS should have kept Moonlight, supported it and promoted it well, and helped it to grow to it's potential! It's also my opinion, that Alex should have been allowed to keep Mick St. John.
