Recently, TV columnist Aaron Barnhart took note of the fact that Oprah Winfrey's show is sinking in the ratings. Her talk show, which is the centerpiece of her multimedia success -- a success that has made her the richest woman in show business -- has been losing ratings consistently for the last six months. At first blush, the politically minded of you might think it's because she endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, but I think it's more than that. After all, if anything, the vast amount of grassroots support that the Senator from Illinois has engendered might be a plus for Oprah rather than a minus. Therefore, there have to be other factors to explain why Oprah's landmark TV talk show has lost its luster -- at least ratings-wise. I've come up with six possible reasons.
1) Has she jumped the shark?
Oprah's gotten too serious, if you ask me. She's just not a lot of fun. The topics are too ponderous, like Dr. Oz scaring me about health issues -- what's in your poo -- or experts talking about hoarding and clutter or some other psychological ailment that's equally bizarre. Then there was all the stuff about the school in South Africa and the book club author who was a liar. Sorry, it was all a downer. Then, in what Barnhart calls a jump the shark moment, Oprah presented the pregnant man.
2) The urge to surf
If you've spent a sick day or two at home in the afternoon, you know that there's a lot more stuff to watch these days than there used to be. The cable revolution -- or satellite if you have a dish -- has resulted in choice galore. When Oprah's show comes on, whatever the time slot, Food Network has cooking shows, ESPN has sports, CNN has news, Bravo has repeats of Project Runway or one of their other primetime shows, Biography has biographies, and on and on. Unless Oprah has a really interesting subject, I'm enticed to surf around until I find something else that day.
3) The New Age angle
One theory put forth about Oprah's decline is that she's embraced too much New Age/personal power/the spirit within me/the secret philosophy to the extent that she's coming off as anti-Christian. I don't buy into this, but apparently a lot of other people do.
4) Time's up
Maybe Oprah has overstayed her welcome. She's been on the air for 22 years. That's a very long time. Oprah has made noises about giving up the show and concentrating on other endeavors, but she's still at it. To many fans, her presence day by day is a comfort. However, the other side of the coin is that she's overstayed her welcome. There's a lot to be said about knowing when to leave. In show business parlance, it's known as leaving them wanting more. If Oprah had ended her show after 20 years, she wouldn't be in this situation now. She could have ended the show on a high.
5) Politics
Okay, maybe her endorsement of Obama has made a difference. I think it wasn't Barack himself, it was the fact that Oprah has been non-political for years, or at least very discreet. This was the first time she injected herself into a political race and that might have turned some people off.
6) Too much commercialism
Oprah never struck me as a shill, not until she started those My Favorite Things shows. Free stuff for the folks in the studio audience, big commercials for the products. It just wreaked of commercialism. The same thing with the free car giveaway. They weren't free; it was an hour long commercial for Pontiac.
So, what do you think? Has Oprah jumped it? Is there a reason I've missed. Tell me...

My comment is that for many years it seems that Oprah stopped being an "everyperson". She has become very rich, which I think is great, however,I do not see her understand plain folk anymore. I do not begrudge her any of her acomplishment, she has worked hard to be where she is. Her shows use to represent what the average person was dealing with. I just don't see her as understanding how I live.

I never watch Oprah, but I did tune in when she had the Mary Tyler Moore Show reunion and while it was great to see the cast, she basically brought each one out, they had about 30 seconds to wave to the audience then Oprah said, "We'll be right back." It was extremely frustrating because the show is 1 minute segments between four minutes of commercials. If her regular shows are like that, then it's no wonder people are tuning out! I was just glad I watched that show from the DVR and not when it was actually on. Maybe that's what people are doing now to get away from all the commercials!

I think it has to do with her new-age cult and the derogatory comments she's made about Christianity. As a Christian man, I've never watched Oprah but have known plenty of women (my wife included) who have. It has been seen largely among Christians as a great, clean alternative to the filthy soap operas and Jerry Springer shows that come on at the same time during the day. Women used to speak of Oprah with respect at how far she has come and how many obstacles she has overcome. But now every Christian woman and even most men have heard of the remarks Oprah has made and most have personally viewed clips from her show on YouTube of her bashing Christianity and promoting her new cult. Most Christians can dismiss her political opinions the same way we can tolerate that one "crazy" uncle who always starts the political debate around the Thanksgiving table with the rest of the family. However when someone thinks herself so great that she can found her own arrogant self-worshiping religion and promote it on her show and then condemn Christian beliefs with horribly misunderstood scripture, she crosses a very clear and very grave line. Oprah's supreme arrogance in thinking that she is so popular that she can brainwash her viewers into thinking the same way she does has not only alienated many of her long-time fans, but has left them with a revulsion they will never forget.

Not that I was ever a massive fan, but I lost a huge amount of respect for her when she bear-baited James Frey, author of A Million Little Pieces.
While the author was pretty shameful in calling the book autobiographical and not fiction; Oprah's melodramatic, tears-welling-up, "you lied to me" performance did her absolutely no favours, and I lost all my respect for her. She absolutely humiliated him for the sake of publicity, and I could have slapped her when watching her performance. Check it on YouTube if you want to see what I mean.
Although personally, I have no problem with her bashing Christians! Reminds me of another book which is fiction and should be classed as such! I'm yet to find a religious text which doesn't lead to close-mindedness and bigotry.

Anti-christian????
People can't stand it when someone thinks out side of the box as if you're going to offend Jesus. You don't even know.
Christians (other religious folk) can be the most hyprocritical people on the damn planet.
Like Bill Maher said, religion makes people crazy and I agree.

ROFLMAO. Yeah, right. It couldn't POSSIBLY be "The One", "The Messiah", "Our Saviour", the man whose "Change" describes the only thing left in your pockets after his tax hikes.
In denial much?

I only really watch when it is Dr Oz, yes it'll scare the pants off you, but I did learn a lot and I'm in better health than ever, and it can be pretty funny too. I'll also watch when it is something to do more with real life situations and people.
I'm burned out by her celebrity interviews where she gushes all over everyone like a school girl. It's fine occasionally, or even once a week, but more times than not she's got fluffy celebrity interviews she tries to say is heavy, or pushing that 'Secret/A New Earth' nonsense.
I'm not a religious person per se, but that stuff she's shilling is just a new way to separate her fans from their money.

Oprah's still on? I mean seriously, I know she is, but I haven't given a thought to watching her in ages. I don't think it's because she's been on too long because if you stay fresh, that wouldn't matter. I'm a Christian, but I know nothing about the "Christianity issue" so that hasn't impacted my decision and it probably wouldn't. But I would definitely put on Food Network or HGTV before Oprah for a few reasons --
1) The commercialism you spoke of in the "My Favorites" shows. Man, did those shows rub me the wrong way. It's not like she needs the money or the advertisers and yet she's basically using her show as an hour long commercial. Plus, to spend an hour watching an audience "ooh!" and "aah!" and rub their cheeks on the finest cashmere and groan with delight as they eat gourment food while I'm there with my "nose pressed up against the window". That's not entertainment and it's not informative. It's rubbing my nose in what I can't afford. Thanks for the uplifting message Oprah. Which brings me to my next point.....
2) I used to watch Oprah because her shows were often inspirational and encouraged generosity, community service and spirit. Not so much anymore. Downer.
3) Gayle. She just annoys the flip out of me for some reason. That road trip she took with Oprah awhile back where they crashed people's weddings - OY! I thought it was rude, arrogant and in poor taste. That was probably the "jump the shark" moment for me.
As to politics, I always took her neutrality to be part of the journalistic code, even though I realize she's not a journalist in the strictest sense. But like you said, she went from being mum on politics to being all out there with this election and that can be devisive and could well have cost her some viewers. Me - I had already tuned out.

I used to watch her but she became all about her she
doesn't do good interviews she always has a story so
the interview becomes about her & noticed the camera
is almost always on her she has become heavier & promotes how she loses weight...& anyone that wants the camera on them needs to use makeup to rid herself of those bags under her eyes. I heard her say she isn't having fun anymore she is tired well its time to get out of the business.

Oprah comes on at 4pm here, but another local station runs that day's episode again at 9pm, and my GF occasionally watches the "late version" of the show.
We've talked about Oprah's "New Age" bent of the past couple of years. We don't consider her to be "anti-Christian", but we *do* consider it to be a bunch of "feel-good, mamby-pamby hooey". So when she does one of those shows, we don't think "oh, here's Oprah bashing our religion again", we think "what snake-oil salesman does Oprah have on today?"
For the record, I'm an Anglican and she's a Methodist, but neither of us wear our faith on our sleeves.

I'm not a huge Oprah fan, so maybe this is biased. However, her interviews (which is when I usually turn in) just aren't that interesting. She doesn't ask the questions that people want to know about. Or if she does and the person avoids the question, there is no follow up. You don't learn anything new from seeing someone interviewed on Oprah.
I agree with the poster who complained about the commercials. The set up (if it is still the same as it used to be) is that you get a 10-12 minute block at the beginning of the show and then it is 2 minutes show, 2 minutes commercials. I haven't clocked it, but it must be shorter than the one hour dramas in prime time.
