It's been several years since I've cared about the outcome of American Idol. The contestants are all starting to look the same to me and half the time I get them confused with people on Top Model. Apparently, I'm not alone. While it's still a ridiculously high-rated show, Last season's Idol did experience a ratings dip. Now, even its executive producer is jumping ship.Nigel Lythgoe has produced Idol for seven seasons, but according to sources, he's grown tired of the singing competition and has said privately that he's "not passionate about it anymore." Instead, Lythgoe is going to spend more time with his other successful Fox competition show, So You Think You Can Dance. This comes on the heels of news that Fox has picked up Dance for a 5th season.
Even though SYTYCD is a summer show, it attracts a good audience and a lot of buzz. Plus its stars are adorably crazy, as opposed to Paula Abdul crazy. Which show is your favorite? Are you still devoted to Idol, or does Dance take the formula and do it better?

I could care less about either show, but if I had to choose SYTYCD is the lesser evil of the two.

Reality TV? What's that? You couldn't PAY ME any amount of money to watch Idol, Dance or any other insipid Reality show.
I am too busy watching smart, well written shows such as Mad Men, Lost, The Office, 30 Rock, The Shield & Friday Night Lights.

Well it's called a VCR or a DVR. Maybe if you apply yourself, you can one day master them.
Okay, I half-joke. But yeah I don't get the whole lumping together of one genre. Reality shows like comedies, drama, and sci-fi have great shows and horrendous shows.
Of course you could've SEEN AI or SYTYCD and realized you didn't like either. That's fine. There's some people who don't like Lost and BSG (I call them insane, but whatever) but from the way you stated your comment you don't even give reality shows a chance. Which again is your prerogative. But yeah I don't get it.

I think the best thing about SYTYCD is that you see something fresh and new each season unlike AI where you see a new crop of wannabes singing Heart, Whitney and Celine.
And to Alex who is soooooo above watching reality tv: You can't be bothered to watch it, but you will take the time to comment on a show you have never seen? Who's the dull one?

I love all the people who came on here to state that they don't like either AI or SYTYCD. So if they're not into either show, why'd they even bother opening this SYTYCD post?

So You Think You Can Dance is one of our favorite programs to watch during the week and one of the few shows on tv that isn't trashy. Too bad you didn't have it on all year around.
As for American Idol it seems to be the same 'ol, same ol' and the only saving grace is Simon Cowell.

Yes American Idol show is getting OLD!!!!It is the same all the time. The producers has to change the concept..This contestants are young or very young and they should sing what is current and not sing songs that most of the contestants and the tv viewers were not even born yet. There are a lot of current songs that are challenging or come up w/ a different age group this time, like from ages 13-19 so it will be more exciting and are very young blood and our next generation.

So You Think You Can Dance is the most entertaining show on TV. Every summer our city is blessed with The American Dance Festival. The dance is wonderfully outrageous! Since I work weekend nights, we go to the ADF on Wednesday nights. Both last summer and this one we came home to SYTYCD and it was far more entertaining than dance companies we'd paid upwards of $50.00 a ticket to see live!
The contestants are so well screened and so talented compared to AI (which is faltering due to stale music and petty relationships between Simon, Paula, Randy, and Ryan--the first 3 being has-beens as far as I'm concerned.) While I love the Oldies-but-goodies, lets freshen AI up with younger contestants, mentors, and judges! At least lower the mentor age to 30! I'm so sick of hearing worn out songs and everyone seems to have to have that Gospel-rock voice that almost yodels!
So back to Dance! I wish the top 10 could just dance on TV all summer and fall without a contest or a winner! They are all so terrific! I didn't vote because I would have had to hand out at least 6 crowns!
Thank you Nigel et al, for producing such an entertaining and inspiring show!
One sour note on both shows—cut the auditions of the mentally and emotionally handicapped. It’s sad to see crushed feelings of those who are being laughed at for the sake of drama. And also I’m ashamed of what the judges did to Katee. That looks to be set up. And Katee didn’t say she’d give up dancing, she said she’d be emotionally exhausted trying out for SYTYCD for the third year! She knew that if she didn’t make the show in two seasons, she’d need to take her dancing in another direction! I hope she wins tonight, not just because I think she’s a beautiful dancer who surpassed every bar the show set, but because she was used to create drama in a show that doesn’t need that kind of negativity!
I believe that the world will come together through dance. Let’s keep it positive.
