The Supernatural Panel - Comic-Con Report

The cast of Supernatural at Comic-Con 2008

For most of my time at Comic-Con the TV show panels had a fairly diverse audience, with an equal amount of men and women. However, during the Sunday morning panels for Smallville and Supernatural I noticed a significant female shift in the audience. This was definitely prominent with Supernatural. Of course, being that the main characters of Sam and Dean (played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) are hot it's understandable. Well, at least that what I observed...I just think they're cute.

Regardless of your opinion of their looks these two stars, along with creator Eric Kripke, talked about season four of Supernatural and what's coming up for the demon hunting brothers.

After some time in Hell, Dean returns from the dead...again. The beginning of the season will deal with how he got out of Hell and what happened to Sam in the four months he was gone. It won't get any easier for Dean once he returns to the living. According to creator Kripke, Dean will wish for the pleasant days of Hell. Meanwhile, it looks like Sam is reinforcing his role as a demon killer. He believes more than ever that his rightful place in the world is for him to get rid of demons and ghosts, just like his father. To that effect, a big part of season four will be how Sam deals with his powers.

From these two events a new storyline will emerge for the brothers. They will both be holding secrets back from each other, which will make them work more independently of one another. Yet, there will still be plenty of moments where they join forces. It will just be a darker relationship, according to Kripke. Both Jared and Jensen are interested in where the characters are going. While Jared isn't surprised on the changes taking place with Sam. Jensen wasn't expecting the changes going on with Dean. Both agree that the changes will add a new layer of characterization to the two brothers.

When asked how the Writers Strike affected production of Supernatural, Kripke said it actually made it a meaner, leaner, and more concise show. Yet, there were still storylines that were not covered during the strike-shortened season. One of these storylines involved a look into the life of the boys' mother. This will be taking place very early in season four. During the audience Q&A someone asked if Kripke still has a plan to run the show for only five seasons. He replied yes, adding that he wanted to avoid jumping the shark. Kirpke would like to leave the audience satisfied rather than have the show slip into mediocrity.

Some other items from the Supernatural panel:

  • The season three DVD will be released on September 2nd in both standard and Blu-Ray formats.
  • The writers feel that season four has the best mythology going for the storyline since season one.
  • There may be a return by the Ghostfacers this season. There is even talk of giving them their own online miniseries. During the panel, Ed and Harry made a cameo appearance pretty much mocking Jared and Jensen as their characters on the show.
  • When asked what Asian horror films influenced the look of Supernatural, Kripke and the writers spouted off a number of titles, including The Two Sisters and the original editions of The Eye, The Grudge and The Ring.
  • Finally, the theme for season five according to its creator: "Pornography".
