(S04E06) Everyone was finding love--or lust--this week on Weeds. The presence of guest stars Julie Bowen and Demian Bichir just made the show significantly hotter. The Botwins and their tenants focused more on their personal lives, with mixed results. Celia developed her maternal side, Andy and Doug pondered their next move, and Silas got to know the neighbors.

Of the three new love interests, Esteban is probably the most promising. I wish that he and Nancy had taken more time to get acquainted, but their only scene together was brief. Did anyone else notice that their encounter didn't match the previews from last week? I hope we didn't miss out on anything good. In the end, Nancy's better off with someone who's also on the wrong side of the law (even if he is the mayor of Tijuana). She seemed far more intrigued by Esteban than by the underground tunnel's link to the drug operation. Loneliness can overpower curiosity, especially when you're as lonely as Nancy. We don't see that side of her too often. Will Esteban be more than a fling?

You can't blame Lisa the cheese merchant for going after Silas. During the hiatus he exchanged his goofy teenage demeanor for some serious pecs. If Nancy had followed through on her promise to be more present at home, she would have noticed a MILF hovering over her son. I'm really starting to feel my age with storylines like this. The shows that I grew up watching would have dealt with this rather differently. The adult would have come across as desperate or predatory; today it's way more casual. Julie Bowen was downright cute when she expressed an interest in Silas, who's only eight years older than her son. Weeds really knows how to mess with your sense of propriety. I'm rooting for an age-inappropriate couple and harboring a crush on a spank-obsessed government official.

Things are looking up for good old Doug. His slow-mo vision of Maria brought a sense of purpose into his life. I'm not sure what to expect from the benevolent coyote venture, but I know it will bring some laughs. I can totally picture a Doug and Andy spin-off series someday. Smaller moments, like the guys shooting the breeze down by the beach, bring a ton of humor to the Weeds world. The Ren Mar world is gradually being formed with scenes like these. Soon we can forget all about Agrestic.

I'm impressed by how quickly the writers got the remaining Agrestic residents (minus Dean) down to Ren Mar. How long before Isabelle becomes partners with Shane in his half of the weed business? Speaking of the weed trade, do you wish that Nancy was more directly involved with Esteban's operation? The preview implied that Nancy's anxious to have a bigger role in the company. That woman is addicted to being in over her head. I doubt that Esteban's mid-level employees will appreciate Nancy's premature attempt to get promoted, especially Guillermo. Hopefully Nancy won't forget that Guillermo got her the job in the first place. She has a bad habit of using people for her own purposes and leaving them in her dust.
