Why I'm nervous about the new X-Files movie

X-FilesOh, I'll be there, probably on opening weekend, but something about the new X-Files flick makes me nervous as hell.

Maybe it's the fact that it has been ten years since the last movie, and I wonder if people are still interested in it enough to make it a hit (and push another movie into production). I also worry about the plot, since nothing much has been leaked about what the film is about, other than it involves snow, mysterious happenings, and Billy Connolly bleeding from the eyes.

No, the real reason I'm worried is that the movie has a "standalone" plot and is not part of the mythology arc from the show and the first movie. I think this could be a mistake.

To be clear, I loved a lot of the standalone X-Files episodes too. I think they're some of the best episodes the series ever had. But we also have a huge story with the alien takeover, and it just seems a bit ridiculous to me that Scully and Mulder have gone on with their lives (working apart from each other and not seeing each other much, if what we see in the previews is clue) when the alien thing hasn't been solved yet. Is it going to be one of those things where fans are supposed to believe that Mulder and Scully reunite to catch a monster, demon, serial killer, whatever and not even wonder, "hey, how's that alien invasion thing coming?"

This always irritated me about the show too.

And what about that ten-year gap? If you're going to make a movie out of a TV show, especially ten years later, doesn't it seem like it has to be BIG, and answer questions from the show? Aren't fans entitled to that? I mean, my God, this plot is going to have to be really something to justify a standalone story ten years after we last heard from these people. I just hope that Mulder and Scully at least talk about the mytharc ... and their child.

Oh, and I'm still pissed about The Lone Gunmen being killed off the show. But that's another rant.
