First up, congratulations to The Daily Show for their multiple Emmy nominations! Hey, Jon Stewart even grabbed a nomination for hosting the Oscars. Well done, well done. Awards night will definitely be interesting, as The Colbert Report also got lots of Emmy attention, but in the very same categories as Jon and his team. I'm so torn between the two that I may have to avoid the issue all together and just blindly root for some other show.Secondly, if you saw The Colbert Report last night and felt a little embarrassed for Stephen Colbert for interrupting Rush's performance of "Tom Sawyer"... It was a planned joke about the length of the band's songs. I cannot believe the number of people who went online to rip on Colbert for being clueless enough to do that. Come on, as if Colbert would screw up Rush's first American TV appearance in 33 years with something like that. I feel silly for even having to clear this up.
"Indecision 2008": Our current administration holds strong to its core beliefs, and this includes not admitting to their own mistakes. Their way around problems is to change up definitions! This is not torture, this is not expensive, this is not negotiation. But it definitely is negotiation.
Enough about the still-president, though. In election news, John McCain made some rather nice remarks about Barack Obama, but only because he was addressing the NAACP. Hmm. The way TDS called out McCain's old stance on the MLK holiday made me want to hug the TV. Beautifully done. Barack Obama also addressed the NAACP with a strict talking-to. I guess he's not scared about Jesse Jackson cutting off his nuts. Both candidates went on to talk about the role of the Hispanic community in the country, and TDS used Lou Dobbs' anger to gauge the speeches' effectiveness. Lou Dobbs' increasingly angry faces literally made me gasp aloud. Do I scare easily or is Dobbs' head just extra horrifying? Let's just go with the latter.
Senior Women's Issues Commentator Kristen Schaal stopped by to talk about the damage caused by calling older women who like younger men "cougars". Bringing an older woman in Jack Hanna style was a pretty funny idea, but every time I see Schaal, I just keep thinking about how she shouldn't be there. Similar to the way TDS wants to grab the administration and force them to take a good hard look at where they are, I wish TDS would re-examine their correspondent reports. I'm a total broken record, but they don't pack quite the same punch as they used to. I must admit though, I will do my damnedest to incorporate "queef nugget" into my every day conversations. Thanks for that, Schaal.
The night's guest was Maggie Gyllenhaal, one of the stars of some small, art house flick called The Dark Knight. Gyllenhaal's doesn't have the same interview charisma as her brother, but comic book discussions are always cool with me. Also, her breathless fangirling was totally adorable and she probably managed to put a few more ladies in the seats just by talking about Batman making her weak in the knees. By the way, the trailers for Watchmen and The Spirit teaser are online, making this decade an even worse time for people who hate comics.
Moment of Zen: I don't think you can be a cougar in kindergarten, unless you had a really weird attraction to fetuses.

Until yesterday I didn't even know anything about "Rush" 'til I visited their Wikipedia-Entry during the commercial break. I know Stephen's Show though and the only explanation I have for people bashing TCR for cutting into the performance is that those people never before watched the show and tuned in to see a full-length "Tom Sawyer" and were angry that they didn't get one.
So I guess you didn't have to clear that up, I guess people were just angry that they tuned in to a show they never wanted to see to begin with anyway and then didn't get what they wanted. A free live song. From Rush. Whatever that is. I don't listen to that kind of music.

Or maybe they liked both and didn't get the joke. That's a possibility.

OK follow-up: I agree with your take on Schaal, though I am extremely content with Wyatt. I am glad that Rob Corddry is gone but miss his brother. I hate it that we don't see anything from Lewis Black anymore because of his own show (which you can watch about three episodes of, then it gets repeating).
Great. Until yesterday I knew nothing about Watchmen, now I have to go buy 12 comicbooks to be able to understand that trailer.
I hated "300" but this one looks darn cool.

You don't need to go out and buy 12 comic books. You can get "Watchmen" as one standalone graphic novel and, while it doesn't hurt, you don't even have to know anything really about the superhero genre to appreciate it. It is a true work of genius, and even made it onto Time magazine's list of the 100 Best Novels in the English Language.
I've read it more than once, and I love it more each time. But I don't think it will make a good movie, and I think it was a mistake to make it into one. For what it's worth, its author agrees:
