(S03E04) "You are what this show is about." - The Hoff
We've heard all three judges say that sentence many times over the past three years of America's Got Talent. Sometimes, they said it too fast and the performer tanked rather quickly in the next rounds. This week, 36-year-old Kyle, who auditioned in
Billy, singer - As expected, mostly because the editing of the show made us used to it, the first act is dreadful. Let's give it to 49-year-old Billy; he was able to sing the right notes most of the time. However, his high pitched voice makes his singing silly and no one will take him seriously as a singer. If Billy really wants to make it in the business, he may want to check out openings to be the voice of cartoon characters.
Alexandra, self-defence act - This 10-year-old showed spirit, had a positive attitude and a great smile! Her performance didn't impress me that much but it could be promising if she makes it more theatrical. Because of the nature of her act and the fact that similar performances are going to Vegas, I don't think she'll go very far.
Sarah, singer - 19-year-old Sarah showed us this week that she has what it takes to make it in the business. She has a strong voice, a positive attitude, good stage presence, confidence and can not only sing but also play guitar. Sarah will probably be voted through a few rounds, but competition will be tough because a lot of great singers moved through to Vegas.
SQ Entertainment - This family group offered a fun performance that was acrobatic and contained a lot of cool moves. One word: wow. They are not my favorite act of the type so far but they are definitely a group to watch for.
The James Gang - The Hoff said that Kyle, the last performer, was what AGT was all about. I think it could have been said to The James Gang as well, since all performers have a touching and sad story and gave a great performance. What may help or hurt The James Gang is that their act is rather unique. The crowd did love the act during the auditions but it's unknown what the voters will do. If they want to move on to the next rounds, they should aim at songs that people know from the style of music they perform.
Victoria, contortionist - Ouch! Victoria definitely has contortionist blood going through her veins because that was impressive. The move she made just before drinking was quite impressive. I doubt she'll win AGT but I wouldn't be surprise if Cirque du Soleil calls sometime this summer.
Matt & Elaine, Polka dancers - What was that? When you hear before an act that the performers created something, it's pretty much a given that the act will be painful to watch. Matt and Elaine's dancing was, as Sharon said, silly. The Hoff said it best: "It looked like to me you were in the blender."
Kyle, singer - The last act of the night = a heartbreaking story + a fantastic performance. I hate it when the show plays with my emotions like this. Yes Kyle is a great singer, but the way they edit the show makes it impossible for us to think for ourselves. Anyway, no matter the editing, I think Kyle would have come out on top this week. As soon as the first note came out of his mouth, I knew he would give an amazing performance. Not only did he make the song "his own," as American Idol judges would say, but he connected with the crowd and made them participate. He is one of the top contenders for the ultimate prize.
Other tidbits of interests and things to ponder:
- Too bad it was a one-hour show because those "good" acts they showed clips of seemed really entertaining, including Flambeaux, the man who performed an act with fire.
- We didn't see much of Nicole, the pole dancer, but what we saw definitely made her look like a gymnast.
- Dear contestants-to-be, Terry Fator spent years perfecting his act. So before going on stage, make sure you have a well-made doll and a fun act. However, the most important thing to remember is that your lips must not move (or the crowd should barely see them moving) when your doll "speaks."
- Oh, and I forgot, oh dear contestants-to-be, if you are Xed by all three judges and if the crowd boos you and is unhappy, please stop singing. It's not helping you at all to keep on going, and going and going.
