Nothing is exempt from betting, including television shows. According to Horizon Media's annual television report, Fox's new show Fringe and CBS' sci-fi drama Eleventh Hour will fare best of the new wave of freshman television shows. Doing worst would be NBC's Kath & Kim and CBS' Worst Week. The report produced some unsurprising claims, such as that Grey's Anatomy, Heroes and Survivor will continue to kick butt in the ratings. The report did produce some surprises such as ABC overthrowing CBS on Friday nights and the Fox sitcom Do Not Disturb finding success. I guess we'll have to wait until the fall season to see how correct the report is.
What irks me is that after combing through the article I found no mention of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. Did they forget to review that one? Is this a sign of things to come that Horizon Media didn't even find the show important enough to rank?

Ryan's got a point, though I've heard back and forth about when it premieres. As for The Dollhouse, I'm so excited about it, but with FOX's trackrecord, I fear it will be cancelled in the first four episodes! I'm curious to hear what others think, too...

I'm pretty sure Fox will cancel it before it even airs.

FOX better be careful, because if they treat this show like other cult hits that they've manhandled, I can't imagine them getting another show like this in the future. I know I will lobby any showrunners thinking of going to FOX in the future to spend more time shopping their show around, for whatever my little opinion is worth.

Hey, at the least Dollhouse is getting the pre 24 timeslot, which is much better treatment than any number of other new shows on Fox have gotten. It could be much worse, it could be airing in the Friday-night-death-slot.

Looking at the "hit" shows FOX is known for, I think that would actually work in FOX's favor.

You do know what I mean by cult hit, right? Firefly, Drive (less so), Wonderfalls, The Inside, etc.

Yes I do and they are all good show that I like but lets face it, Fox is a hit because there is a large percentage of morons in the world that think Moment of Truth is entertaining. That is their target demographic. So if they dont get these chances what do they care, their new show where contestants have sex with hookers in front of their wives will get triple the ratings that Drive did. I mean every show on that list was cancelled and replaced by a reality show that got better ratings. Its a sad sign of the times, but TV is a business and if Fox is making $ off of crap they are going to not care about the cult gems, they make them no money.
By the way I exclude House when I call Fox crap, that is their rare exception.

I do think Fox cares a little about maintaining a couple shows each year that are critical successes and thought to be quality shows. As much money as all those reality shows make them (compared to how much they cost to produce), Fox wants to be considered a serious network, and you don't get to be a serious network unless you have some top quality dramas or comedies. Otherwise, Fox could just move Fox Reality over to broadcast to replace Fox and be done with it.

Fox wouldn't continually spend the amazing amounts of money marketing and producing their couple of dramas a year if they didn't care. And showrunners will eventually stop bringing their shows to Fox if they continue to get treated like shit. At least I hope they eventually get the message.

I'm not so sure either Fringe or Eleventh Hour will do as well as they think-both pilots have been leaked and the response, for the most part, has been underwhelming. I think they're actually re-shooting the Eleventh Hour pilot. I know that few shows have stellar pilots, but this is not a promising start.
And I wouldn't be surprised if Grey's Anatomy and Heroes slip in the ratings. Grey's is no longer has the "buzz" it once had, and Heroes was a victim of the writers' strike-it's been off the air since December? and the episodes last fall were considered a disappointment.

The problem with Heroes is that it's not really a hit. The ratings are only a hit by NBC's very low standards.

Seeing as there seems to be no accounting for good taste in terms of what viewers choose to make a hit these days, reverse the order of what is expected to be a hit and what is expected to fail and we'll have the truth. :(

Didn't the post LOST sci-fi boom teach us anything? People don't like sci-fi when they know it's sci-fi. The only post LOST show to last was Heroes, and thats only because it's a superhero show. The only reason LOST made it is because you didn't know it was sci-fi until you were already hooked. Fringe will probably be the first show cancelled.
