NBC Universal, Donald Trump and Paula Shugart (president of the Miss Universe Organization) announced the celerbrity panel of judges today for the Miss Universe Pageant, which will be broadcast live from Vietnam this Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Telemundo.. Donald Trump, Jr., Roberto Cavalli, Nadine Velazquez, Jennifer Hawkins, Louis Licari, John Nguyen will judge the competition. So where are the celebrities? At least Nadine Velazquez is on My Name is Earl. I guess you could argue that Don, Jr. is on The Apprentice but I'd hardly classify him as a celebrity. I'm not saying that some of these judges aren't successful in their fields. Cavalli is an international designer. Licari is a colorist to the stars (I guess he'll be checking the girls for bad roots). John Nguyen is a successful entrepreneur. Jennifer Hawkins won the pageant in 2004. But, as far as Hawkins goes, it's like having Taylor Hicks be a guest mentor on Idol. Lame-O. At least they have real celebrities as hosts. Jerry Springer and Mel B. will led the ceremonies.

Ouch! Aussies everywhere are crying foul here...... Jen Hawkins is about as far from lame as you can get!!!
Maybe most American's have no clue who she is, but in Australia she is quite the celebrity. Co-hosts several TV shows, has been the Aussie face for a number of International Fashion lines, not to mention the fact that she is a previous winner - so how could any of the other judges have a BETTER idea than her what it takes????
And....after all.....it is Miss "Universe" not Miss USA, so what is wrong with having a former winner from outside the US????? Strange how the word "celebrity" seems only to apply to people who are tabloid news in the US......

Sorry Aussies! The press release said she was a former winner (but that's it--no specifics on shows).
And yes, for me celebrity does apply to those skanky people I see in the tabloids...here.
But you're right, it is an international competition so I shouldn't be so America-centric.

I am sorry too Kristin, quite a few of us Aussies are very protective of our Jen! heh heh
In truth, the Miss Universe pageant was hardly considered newsworthy in Australia until Jennifer Hawkins won and since then more Australian's have been paying attention. Erin McNaught in 2006 was considered a big hope to emulate Jen's success, but alas, it was not to be.
It wouldn't surprise me if the inclusion of Jennifer Hawkins as a judge is an attempt to add more interest here in Australia again.
