Amid controversy and the threat of certain world leaders boycotting the upcoming Beijing Olympics, the word came out yesterday that President George W. Bush would attend the opening ceremonies. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this is good news for NBC, and the companies that have bought advertising for the Games. While I can see how a boycott based on human rights abuses in China and Tibet would be a serious problem for the network -- and it still may lose viewers who choose to individually tune out rather than give positive sanction to China's misdeeds by watching -- I don't see how NBC can think a Bush appearance will bolster ratings.
Currently, George Bush has one of the lowest approval rating of any U.S. President ever in the twilight of his second term in office. The CNN/Opinion Research survey on June 26-29, 2008 found that only 30% of the country approved of his job performance, compared to 68% disapproval.
That means only three out of ten people like what W. is doing right now. Even if every one of that 30% tune in to the Olympic opening ceremony, will it really help NBC?
NBC has done some polling, too, and a majority of American viewers haven't been fazed by the political issues and separate the politics from the competition.
On the other hand, the AP reported that U.S. Representatives from the President's own party, Chris Smith, New Jersey, and Frank Wolf, Virginia, were in China and said W. shouldn't attend the Olympics at all unless China's human rights stance is changed.
As the Olympics draw nearer, the negative rhetoric about China's human rights violations are likely to grow louder. Will it effect NBC's broadcast? I wouldn't be surprised, and an appearance by an outgoing, unpopular president won't help.

I used to be a huge Olympic fan. Then, when I realized the networks only showed what they liked, I started to rebel. I love equestrian events, since horses are my thing. Yet, only if there is a medal chance are they shown. I realized that all anyone cares about are the medals. And only Gold. You 'settle' for silver or bronze. Shame. Just to be there is such an honor, and yet we take away their pride. "Oh, you didn't win? See ya." Is George so desperate for attention in his lame duck year that he has to shove his way in, and yet further reduce attention to the people who deserve to be there?

If Bush snubs China, the Chinese will NOT see it as a snub over human rights in Tibet or anywhere else. The Chinese PEOPLE will see it as a complete snub of them and an insult to ALL Chinese. Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but neither the Chinese people nor the Chinese government see any significant difference between them. Outsiders that insult one of them insult ALL of them. They;re not so bitterly divided as we are here.
Don't use your own narrow political views to filter the rest of the world. Get acquainted with all the details before you prattle on about how stupid Bush is being.
We need China for two big reasons right now.
1. The loss of Chinese goods would cripple our economy and make the current trouble seem like a walk in the park.
2. We need them to keep North Korea in check. Regardless of how some idiots in this country see NK, they are a danger to that part of the world and China knows it. Bush is shoring up Chinese support by attending the games when so many other stupid, Western morons are using the games to stage their own personal little melodramas.
Snubbing them and boycotting the Games will only solidify China's resolve to own, maipulate and destroy (if they feel like it) Tibet. It WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. The Chinese do not do *anything* because of outside pressure. They will move when they want to move, and the way to get them to *want* to move is to continue offering them the benefits of Western business and modernization.
China is an amazingly complicated, and yet amazingly simple place. Most Westerners don't get it at all.

#2 is valid, but the Chinese have never stopped selling goods to anyone because they felt "snubbed." You forgot a better #1, though, which is that they are financing the war in Iraq as well as lower US taxes by continuing to buy large amounts of US bonds.
Seriously, though, the Republican congressmen are only trying to make the administration be consistent in its policy of not "rewarding" bad actors with official visits and other attention. OTOH, the President thinks Vladimir Putin is a swell fellow, and he may think the same of Wen Jiabao, Hu Jintao, etc.

@bc: Oh that is so frigging ridiculous. All you've done is demonstrate your ignorance about international diplomacy, trade and relations with China.
Not everything requires full display of your BDS you know.

Obviously, George would have to accept campaign contributions from the Commies and give them missile technology (like the last guy) to earn any respect around here.

How can it solidify their resolve and have no effect on their decisions at the same time?

Oh for fuck's sake. It will not have the effect Westerners expect, but rather strengthen their resolve to do the opposite in order to demonstrate both sovereignty and Chinese pride. Is that better, Nitpicky McNotcontributing?

Very few people care, and the ones that do won't be watching anyways.

I was planning to tune in no matter who showed up. Now I'll just see how many times NBC cuts to Dubya's face
Also, sorry to be the grammar bitch, it's AFFECT NBC's broadcast, not EFFECT.

You've got it backward--basking in the glow of the Olympics will help Bush's approval rating.
If anything can, that is.

The post asks, "Will Bush help NBC?"
Seriously, aside from Big Oil and Halliburton, what has Bush ever helped?
