It looks like Jason Schwartzman isn't going to be the only one on HBO with problems. HBO has just announced that it is developing an hour-long drama titled Manic for the fall season. Based on Terri Cheney bestseller, Manic, A Memoir, the series focuses on a successful female attorney secretly struggling with bipolar disorder. Both the book and the series tell the story of Cheney's own life as a lawyer who kept her illness a secret form her boss as she dealt with her demons and tried to keep her career on track. While no details regarding casting have been announced, Cheney is set to serve as consulting producer. Janet Tamaro (Bones, Sleeper Cell) is set to create the pilot and executive produce.
Although Manic and Schwartzman's Bored to Death seem like steps in the right direction for HBO, I'm still a little wary. I only have to look back to a year ago when I was super-excited about a little show called John From Cincinnati that I thought would surely help soothe the pain left by a Six Feet Under and Sopranos-free network to remember how badly HBO has hurt me in the past. With that said, I'm nothing if not an optimist and HBO's new lineup may just get me to subscribe again--for a little while at least.

So how many new shows does this make for HBO, about 100? It seems like they are just gonna throw a whole bunch of crap on the wall and see what sticks. I saw some ads for some new comedies they are filming now and they are pure crap. 1 British show with 2 cross-dressers that looked dumb, 1 Aussie show that didn't look funny, and 1 cartoon that was both dumb and boring plus it was just 1 step up from stick figures. I guess at HBO they are going for quantity instead of quality. They have shown ads that say they have the most new shows on premium cable while Showtimes ads say they have the best shows on premium cable. If HBO doesn't go back to making quality and keeping quality on the air they will never catch back up to Showtime. It's a damn shame to see how far they've run HBO into the ground.
