TV Guide is reporting that the complete series of The Sopranos will be available as a box set on Nov. 11, 2008, with a $400 price tag. That seems like a heckuva deal to me, given that fact that most seasons of any given show cost anywhere from $30 to $60. The individual seasons of The Sopranos sell for $60 each on the HBO Web site, and the complete series was released last year for $515. So let's do the math here: Six seasons (TV Guide says seven, but the official HBO site refers to Season Six, Parts 1 and 2, as one season, so we'll go with that) divided by $400 comes out to $66.66 per season.
And it's not just ANY TV series. It's The Sopranos, for gosh sakes, with some cool extras. The 30-disc boxed set will feature all six seasons; an interview with series creator David Chase, conducted by Alec Baldwin; three soundtrack CDs; and two featurettes with the cast sitting down for dinner and reflecting on the series.
The only thing I'm thinking is that the individual seasons have even more extras. Like, for example, Season Two includes a featurette called "The Real Deal," with critics, psychiatrists, and former FBI agents discussing The Sopranos. Season Five features audio commentaries with directors Steve Buscemi, Peter Bogdanovich, Mike Figgis, and Rodrigo Garcia.
It would be nice if they included all of that in the complete set. And maybe a Satriales coffee mug or Bada Bing flip-flops or something. Then again, maybe we don't have all the intel yet either. No word on whether the complete set features alternative endings. I'm guessing not. (Rats, now I've got Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" playing over and over in my head.)
At any rate, I'll probably be shelling out the dough. What about you? Will you slap down 400 bucks for this DVD set?

$66 a season? Name me one, just one, other TV series that costs that much. And per episode, it's an even worse deal.
Sure, it's HBO. Sure, it's a good series. But the going rate for a 20-something episode season of an hour-long show is somewhere between $30 and maybe, tops, $50. When HBO brings their prices down to those levels, we'll talk. Until then, they're pricing themselves out of a large chunk of the DVD collectors' market.

Maybe $400 for everything on Blu-ray. But since I already own all the seasons on DVD I probably won't re-buy them.

Quite natural actually...an overrated show obviously demands overpriced dvd releases.

Wait, so you tell us that HBO is selling the individual seasons for $60, then when you figure out that this package costs $66.66 a season, you're calling it a good deal? Try that math again.

Seriously, are you TRYING to Bullshit us?
Seasons 1 to 5 cost 39.49 on Amazon.com, which is not the absolute cheapest source for DVDs - there's always a deal on some other page on the net. Let's just take this source for the sake of the argument. Season 6.1 and 6.2 sell for 50.99 and 51.99 respectively.
That's 5x 39.39 + 50.99 +51.99.
Sure, the complete set sells for 514.99 on amazon but if you take the "tedious" work of adding seven different sets to your cart then the grand total is: 300,43
Wow, WHAT A DEAL.
And to the above poster: before you start complaining about expensive box-sets you should actually do some research.
All of you.
Again I don't get it. Basic math. A single search query. calc.exe on windows.
Is it THAT hard to produce a post?
I am starting to think that you guys here in TVSquad put up posts with serious flaws just to spur wild discussions and angry replies. It's getting tedious.

You people are so incapable to calculate.
All HBO shows cost $60. The Wire sosts $60, SFU costs $60, Deadwood costs $60 and so on and on and on.
Don't worry I won't stop now. ;-)
There are 7 individual Sopranos boxes out there, that's why 7 divided by $400 comes out $57. Additonally the set contains 3 Soundtrack CDs plus two DVDs with bonus.
So yes, it is much cheaper than buying all seasons individually.$400 is the official HBO price for this set containing 33 discs. But you will get it a lot cheaper on amazon. $200 to $300?
The Six Feet Under Complete Set (25 discs) officially costs $280 on HBO but it costs $170 (new) on amazon
Work carefully at school, get your degrees and get a nice job and don't ask your parents to pay for ya, whiny beegees.

I don't think so.
Most problaby and most logically the set will contain the previous 28 DVDs with their extras plus two more DVDs with new extras plus 3 Soundtrack CDs.
