(S04E10) "I have a migraine...I have a migraine...I have a migraine." - Matt, who had a migraine
I worked with a couple of people like Matt in my restaurant days. Fine when things were perfect, but deep down inside there was something wrong with them, and it came out in scary, whiny, immature ways. Tonight we saw the side of Matt that was only hinted at in previous weeks. But will his cooking skills save him in the end?
But before we get to that, we find out that Corey and Christina want to make Jen's life a living hell, now that she's back on the red team (Matt is back on the blue team). It doesn't really matter though, since Chef Ramsay merges the two teams into one (black and white uniforms!) on top of the London West Hollywood, the restaurant one of these players will be in charge of at the end of this season (formerly referred to as London L.A. - maybe they should have kept that name because Los Angelenos and tourists could refer to it as "LoLa"). Ramsay shows them the cash they could win. Matt wants to smell it.
The first individual challenge is to take one ingredient and make a great dish in 45 minutes. And everyone does rather well except Bobby, whose duck in his Duck Noodle Soup was too tough. It comes down to Jen and Christina. The winner is Jen, who gets a Las Vegas trip as her reward. But she gets to take someone with her. Will she take Christina, who was the other finalist? No, she takes Corey, the person she hates. Not sure if this is a strategy thing or not, but Corey doesn't buy it.
As for Christina, she says "I don't want to go to Las Vegas with Jen. She's a bitch." Noted. Meanwhile, the other players have to unload delivery trucks. Matt complains of a sore shoulder (this will be the first of many complaints tonight). Matt starts dropping everything and swearing more than..well, more than Ramsay. He gets into a fierce argument with Christina, starts swearing at her, and then starts to get into it with everyone else, telling everyone to &%$#! themselves. He also starts slapping his own head, to show how crazy he is. Closeup of a knife in his hand (a little overdone there - we get the point FOX).
At service, Ramsay puts Jen's sirloin dish on the menu. A few observations about one of the worst dinner services of the season:
- There's no way Matt can win this game. He doesn't have the temperament, the personality, or the communication skills. I can't imagine Ramsay saying "here's $250,000 and the key to your new eating establishment."
- Corey falls apart very quickly. She gets more confused than ever and even burns her hand. Ramsay tells her to leave but she comes back after it is treated.
- Matt and Christina are put on the meat line together? Ramsay must have done that because he saw the tension between the two earlier (Matt: "Christina really needs to grow up. She's a nasty bitch with cellulite on her ass"), unless it's a big coincidence.
- Bobby and Petrozza are really flying under the radar, pretty consistent, and I can't imagine that they won't be in the final three.
- Matt wants to make it very clear to everyone that he has a migraine.
It's a typical service. Typically bad. Matt sends out overcooked and undercooked meat, the stations are sloppy, food goes out way too late, no one communicates, rice is burned. Ramsay delights in telling each person (except Bobby and Petrozza) to get the &*^% out and go to the dorm (he even leads Matt by the hand). The kitchen is closed. The team has to pick two nominees for elimination.
There's really not much suspense in who goes home. While Christina and Matt are both picked, and Corey picks herself, Matt is sent home. This is just after Matt tells everyone to go to hell because Chef Ramsay understands him and he's not going home. I think viewers knew at that moment knew that Matt was going bye-bye even if Matt didn't.
Next week: Hell's Kitchen welcomes supermodels with big breasts and slinky dresses! It's like all of the reality shows rolled into one!

It's sad that the entire lineup from the beginning wasn't that strong to begin with and here with 5 left there's still no clear front runner.

Totally agree with Kurifurisan. This group is the worst this show has had. The unfortunate part of it is that GR is going to be one's boss. I dread the thought.
In reality I don't think any of them has the talent to work in a Ramsay kitchen.

Man, do all those chefs smoke like chimneys? I wonder how they can taste anything.

Chefs who work a line usually are big smokers.

You have obviously never worked in a kitchen. Not only is there a lot of smoking, there's also usually a lot of drinking, snorting lines and smoking weed, too.
You should read Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" some time. Although Bourdain was more than an average party guy in his day, the overall tone of the book is pretty accurate in my experience.

Vincent, that has always been a common thread on this show. on all the seasons, most of the cooks competing are big chain smokers.
i agree with you Bob. out of all, Bobby and Petrozza are in the top three. don't know who the other third is, but it rotates between Jen and Christina.

Last year you could tell Rock had the talent and skills and Jen was real good too, but this year no on really stands out. Bobby is not bad, nor is Petrozza, but not spectacular. Jen is talented, but it seems not a good "employee". Corey and Christina don't seem bad, just meh. I think the past winners still work for him, but maybe this year will be the first for a firing. What would be a funny shocking twist, NO WINNER :P

h8rain, couldn't agree more. It would be a great swerve at the end if no one got the prize -- frankly not a one of them deserves it.
Maybe GR pulls a similar stunt to the first season and offers the winner a chance to cook alongside him for a time.
And what WAS the whole reason for putting Jen and Matt back on their old teams only to merge the next day -- unless as some have suspected this season, we're not seeing the whole picture. Maybe something had to be cut out of this season for whatever reason and we are only getting half the story.

Over the past several weeks Ramsay keeps calling Petrozza a pig or slob in the kitchen, so I don't see this as positioning him to become the winner (who would want to eat food from this slob?). I think Corey has a shot because she blamed herself for her failure, taking responsibility is a good thing. Bobby seems to be under the radar in every episode, not too many negative things ever said about him, makes me think that this has been edited to put a positive light on the winner, maybe Bobby. Quite frankly, I don't any of them deserve the top slot. I don't Gordon Ramsay putting any of them at the helm of his new restaurant---not a positive thing when you're opening a new restaurant---we've seen too much of these inadequate chefs to want to sample their wares at his place. GR isn't stupid, he may not name a winner.

This show shouldn't be as good as it is. All the contestants (no point in calling them chefs really) are horrible. Hmm... maybe Bobby and Petroza are merely bad, not terrible. They are all mediocre at cooking, and their individual levels of arrogance are quite stunning given the apparently corresponding disparity in talent. Maybe that's what makes the show enjoyable, getting to partake in Ramsay's perpetual tongue-lashing of folks who thoroughly deserve it.
Words of wisdom: "Take off your jacket. GET OUT!"

This is the worst bunch ever. Corey and Christina have leadership skills, but why cry? Jen I really hope loses, because she has a nasty attitude. I really didn't think her dish was that great. Bobby hides too much, and Petroza? Dirty people make dirty food. I am so glad Matt is gone.

Ramsay is right, they are a bunch of f'n losers.
Especially the diners. What? Your food is taking too long? Who ever would have expected that at HK?

I would never even push my head into a Hell's Kitchen eatery, not even if Ramsey were giving away thr food for free. He is a dirty little egomaniac who looks like he never showers. He is Nasty, Nasty, Nasty. I could never swallow food coming out of that hell hole where people are so abused.
I say, take that mess off the air; never mind wasting time with who is best.
And by the way, what became of Rock?
