You're probably not going to see this on Martha Stewart.
British chef Jamie Oliver made a point recently about the way that chickens (and other animals) are treated and killed in the manufacture and processing of food. Oliver has been an activist for years and really wants people to understand where their food comes from. He brought out a bunch of fluffy, cute baby chicks and let a studio audience pet them and get to see how they cute they were. Then he took the baby chicks and gassed them, live on stage. Then he fed one to a big snake.
It's a little disconcerting, with the wacky music and the audience oooooing and ahhhhhhing. Then the killing comes and the audience cries (though I wonder if they know that you have to kill chickens and cows and other animals you see dancing in Pixar films to make the food we love to eat). Video after the jump (though you won't actually get to see the snake eat the chick, you ghouls).
By sheer coincidence, I'm having chicken tonight.

Nice :-)
And remember, the other method is just throwing them into a mincer. Alive.

Jamie Oliver is a stupid idiot....what a cruel person to show this live........facts of life are not always pleasant but you don't have to flaunt it and not even feel bad about it....I for one will NEVER watch one of his shows again.

After seeing that video and then looking at the picture you chose to accompany this post, I can't stop laughing. Just look at Jamie Oliver, gleefully cutting up something mysterious and blood red.

I COULDN'T HELP BUT LAUGH TOO, HILARIOUS WITH HIM CUTTING UP THE MEAT THEN THIS TOPIC. I TELL YOU. I DIDN'T VIEW THE VIDEO, PROBABLY WOULD'VE CRIED FOR POOR CHICKS TOO. BUT NOW ANIMALS WEREN'T PUT ON THIS DAMN EARTH TO LOOK AT VEGANS. SORRY, AND I DO SKIP MEAT FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS AT A TIME, BUT THEIR PURPOSE IS FOR FOOD LOOK AT THE FOOD CHAIN. I SWEAR IF I GET A FUR AND SOMEONE THROWS PAINT ON IT I'M SERIOUSLY GOING TO KICK A** AND THEN MAKE YOU PAY FOR IT.

I agree. he can't make a point about being an animal activist and yet make meat dishes. However, I think in the picture in the top is of him chopping red peppers.

LOL!!! I laughed too at that picture. It looks like some kind of pepper that he's cutting up, but your comment was still hilarious.:P
I watched the video and I did cry for the poor little chickies because they WERE very cute and fluffy....but I still dig a stuffed chicked breast or some hot wings. I think the only thing that creeps me out about most meats now is all the hormones and crap they put in them. I work in a middle school and it seems like kids are 3 times the size that they were when I was a kid. I think it's the hormones messing with their growth.

You can't see this on Martha Stewart because it's illegal to kill animals on TV for entertainment.

I'm a long time vegan. I appreciate his efforts to show people how inhumane slaughter is, but he did the very same thing! So what did he prove? I am so tired of people saying that animals are here for us to eat. No they aren't. Why can you eat some but cringe at dog or cat? Because you don't know the animals you eat? They are raised in horrible ways, and killed. It doesn't matter if they are killed humanely, they are still killed.

Mmmmm..... meeeeeeeat... yummmmm.... Nothing like some tasty dead animals, tell ya what! 'Specially if ya kin throw 'em on th' grill and singe 'em just a little bit first! I bet vegans are even tastier! Yup.. Nothing like a nice chicken-fried vegan!! Hooo-BOY!
OK, seriously, the fact is, MJ, yes, we DO need animal protein for proper nutrition, and vegans and vegetarians can rail all they want against that fact with rebuttals that our protein needs can be met with vegetable protein, blah blah blah, but in fact they cannot. Side note: Ironically enough, many vegetarians/vegans have disproportionately high cholesterol, higher than those who eat red meat.
Eating meat is neither evil nor immoral, or unhealthy (assuming you're not eating something full of artificial stuff). It has been and always will be a necessary part of a healthy complete diet. It is naive and demonstrative of a misplaced empathy to believe otherwise. Should we be respectful of and thankful for the life we are taking in eating meat? Certainly. Are you respectful and thankful for the life you take in choosing to eat only plant matter? Yes, it's only a PLANT's life, but where's the cut-off point? The point I'm making is that it is a mistake to think that animals are not to be eaten - if you feel that they are, then you'd better ask yourself what you CAN eat that doesn't kill, exploit, use, or interrupt the life/propagation process of some sort of living organism for a purpose other than their natural tendency to propagate and survive.
Was it wrong for Oliver to kill the chicks on stage to make his point? Sure. It was pointless and shocking, and dreadfully tasteless. Should we treat our animals humanely and respectfully when we take their lives in order to provide meat? Absolutely. But should we delude ourselves into believing it WRONG or unnatural that we should eat meat? Absolutely NOT.
Man, all this talk about food and meat has made me hungry. Think I'll go have a Boca Burger with a side of fried pork rinds..... mmm.. KRUNCHY!!!

Hey, I'm a vegan too, and I wanted to completely disagree with the person who commented beneath you. From a strictly nutritional standpoint, if we are ignoring the inhumanity of the slaughterhouses, and just looking it as, well, humans gotta eat, no, we don't need animal protein, and many people survive just fine without it. Most vegetarians and vegans are in fact healthier than those consuming meat products, and are able to get the right amount of protein and other nutrients including calcium from soy products. Biologically, we are better suited to be herbivores, than omnivores or carnivores. Our jaw moves side to side in a grinding motion rather than up and down so as to swallow most of our food whole like other meat-eating animals. Don't even bring up, oh we have canines, when is the last time you tried to tear a hunk of raw meat from an animal carcass with those things? Horses also have sharp teeth in front, they are for tearing and sheering. We are most closely related to monkeys therefore we should probably be classified as frugivores, much like they are. Tell me the next time you see a dead animal and your mouth starts to water, you don't have the instincts to kill or eat an animal that hasn't been grilled or broiled, seasoned with spices or topped with sauce! I have many more reasons why we are not suited to be omnivores, but I'll stop.

take a meats processing course at a university. the only animals that are treated inhumanely are the ones that are (sadly) raised in ILLEGAL slaughterhouses. those illegal ones are shut own as soon as possible. PETA only shows videos of the bad places just to make people think that's how they all are. more power to you for being vegan, but i didn't climb to the top of the food chain to eat carrots...

Ok...no I did not watch the video. I have no interest in seeing anything that just the sound of it is disturbing. I am just wondering....has anyone seen the movie Untraceable? I find there to be an interesting correlation between this article and that movie.....if people refused to watch, it wouldn't be shown.
