If you watched the network morning shows this morning, you've seen the shocking sight of the Big Three evening news anchors -- Brian Williams, Katie Couric, and Charlie Gibson -- appearing on each show ... together! Gasp! How can that happen? Don't the networks have contract clauses and armies of lawyers to prevent these things from happening?Well, I guess the lawyers tend to stay home when a good cause is involved. The anchors went on the news shows this morning to announce a cross-network telethon called
It's rare to see the networks band together like this, especially when it's not in reaction to an immediate disaster like 9/11 or the tsunami from a few years back; both events generated similar cross-network telethons. But the really interesting thing about the day was seeing Couric on the Today show, almost two years after her departure. There seemed to be a lot of joking around -- Matt Lauer kiddingly told her "your time is up" when she tried to interject during a teaser for the next segment -- but did anyone notice how little interaction she had with Meredith Vieira? Odd, wasn't it?

Seems like the major US networks don't do telethons anymore.

Yes, this will step on the toes of the Jerry Lewis telethon, but let's face it: That show is a relic, and more people are affected by cancer, so this has the potential to raise A LOT more money.
I also don't think you can discount the role Fox's "Idol Gives Back" played in the networks' decision to stage this event.

Any woman who fights back against cancer deserves my entire suppport. I only have 3 direct daughters and many hundreds of female friends - guys, if you know what this means to them, join in my celebration of their survival. If you do not understand, simply shake your head and move away.

Well, sure, more people are affected by cancer, but when you speak to people trying to raise money for other causes, it doesn't take long before they admit cancer gets the lion's share of the attention. Is this telethon really going to cure cancer? Yet, Jerry's telethon--regardless of what a relic it may be--actually helped people with Muscular Dystrophy.
I guess they don't matter as much anymore.
