Thanks to everyone who commented on my Put Me Out of This Misery Award post. If there's one thing that people are passionate about, besides what their favorite shows are, are the shows that they don't want around anymore. Below are the five nominees for this award, the show that has overstayed its welcome and should be put down already, damn it! Also, after the jump, a poll for what you would choose for this award, what we're calling the Reader's Choice Award. Both awards will be announced next week.

The nominees, in alphabetical order...

1. According To Jim (ABC): This show has become so attached to the "why is this show still on the air?" phrase that TV fans seem to utter every May that maybe the award should have been called "The According To Jim Award." But that would mean it couldn't be in the running! Look, I have nothing against Jim Belushi and I've loved Courtney Thorne-Smith for 20 years, but it does baffle me that this show gets renewed every single year.

2. The Apprentice (NBC): The novelty of this show has really worn thin, if there was any novelty to being with. You know a show should probably go when they start having spinoffs and celebrity editions, and NBC has had both (remember the Martha Stewart version?). Honestly, I think there is a place for reality shows and reality game shows on television, but the fewer the better, and The Apprentice is definitely one that NBC should just put away for good.

3. CSI (CBS): I've never been a fan of this show (or any of the 22 spinoffs), but I've been hearing from hardcore CSI fans who think this show should be put to rest. And we here pretty much agree. The plots are getting more and more out there, the snazzy special effects are no longer special, and all the spinoffs lessen the original (though even the spinoffs could easily be added to this category as well).

4. Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC): I'll put up with a lot of TV, especially late at night, when I'm tired but awake and probably eating leftover pizza or Doritos, but have you ever actually seen this? My God, the person that Daly has on as his first guest, the big name, is the person that all of the other late night talk shows would have on as their third guest. Sometimes I look at the late night lineups and think "who the hell is that?" There's absolutely no reason to actually take the time to stay up late at night to watch this, and when it's a late, late, late show, you have to give viewers a reason not to go to bed. It's not even worth recording.

5. Law and Order (NBC): This show has become a shadow of its former self, almost a self-parody. What we loved about the early years (and even the middle years) of Law and Order was the fresh writing, the surprises, the play between the actors. The actors are still fine, even if they do seem to rotate a lot more often than they used to, but the plots and writing...honestly, "ripped from the headlines" has gone from a cool catchphrase to an order in the writers room. I don't want to see stories copied from what's going on in the news, because not only will the stories be less interesting than the real life versions (truth is indeed stranger than fiction), but the show starts to look like a gimmick and not an original drama.

For the record, both ER and Scrubs were considered, but since they have already been put out of our misery (both shows have announced that this fall is the final season), I figured that it would be a waste of space to nominate them to go away. Hmmm...both ER and Scrubs are NBC shows, as are three of the five nominees above. No wonder NBC is doing so badly.
