Ugly Betty will be better in New York says exec producer

Ugly bettyNow that we know that Ugly Betty is coming back next season (it was never in doubt) and that the Ugly Betty production is moving to New York, executive producer Silvio Horta has shared a few more bits of news and tidbits about Betty and company.

For starters, the producers are determined to streamline the show, taking advantage of being in NYC and sharpening the focus of the show. Horta said the goal for the Ugly Betty writing team for season three is "to make the show more about Betty's journey and to weave the characters into more unified, emotionally grounded plots."

"We needed to get back to the basics of what you felt in season one and the first few episodes of season two. We think there's much more that the show can be. The move will allow us to use the city more and to use the city in that very romantic, Sex and the City way. That was my goal from the get-go, to capture that," said Horta. The pilot for Ugly Betty was shot in New York, Horta noted. That's the kind of energy they're looking to attain once more. For one thing, scenes like the recent horse-drawn carriage in the city will look more realistic (not to mention actually being in the New York fashion district if they want, including the tents for Fashion Week).

Horta confirmed that Rebecca Romijn as Alexis will be a recurring character next season, but she's not being written off. Also, he explained that while the Lindsay Lohan mini-arc (starting with the finale this week) may seem on the surface to be a celebrity stunt guest turn, but the story is truly all about Betty. "We felt this could be a guest arc that could really inform Betty's journey -- where she's been and where she's going -- in a really cool, fun way. Lindsay now is just known for the tabloids, but she was – she is – an amazing actress. I hope the magic can be recaptured here, and we all believe it can." That means the Lindsay from Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, not Herbie Fully Loaded and Bobby.
