(S06E19) After two and a half months, it all comes down to this. As Tom put it, the end is near and the trophy is within reach. Like we have seen in the past, finals week brings with it the big freestyle numbers. There was a new twist this year though, the Cha Cha Faceoff. The couples were tasked with sharing a cha cha number, each of them providing a one minute segment. It all came together to make for a great night of dancing. Read on past the jump for the scores, and a look at each of the performances.
The couples drew numbers for the order in which they would perform in the faceoff. Cristián was happy to go first and set the tone. Jason liked second because he got to see where the bar was set, but didn't have to follow Kristi. And Kristi liked third because it gave her the chance to blow everyone away. An added twist was that the three couples practiced together to make the routines work together as one cohesive number. It was interesting as they got a chance to eyeball what each of the teams had planned.
Cristián & Cheryl started things off with a big leap from the stage for Cristián and then jumped into some synchronized hip shaking for the meat of the performance. The great Cristián charisma blended with a number of intricate steps to make for a very nice start to the group number. They finished their segment with a huge slide across the floor with Cheryl in Cristián's good arm.
Jason & Edyta jumped in next. Jason doesn't look nearly as natural in the cha cha, but he held his own. Their big trick had Jason vaulting over Edyta's shoulders and then sliding back through her legs. It wasn't as smooth as it could have been, but you have to respect his ambition in going for it. Overall a nice performance, but a step off from the other two.
Kristi & Mark got off to a big start with Kristi kissing Bruno at the judge's table before she joined Mark on the floor and again showed how technically amazing she is. Along with the technique we all expected was a great, fun loving, attitude. It really seemed that Kristi was having a lot of fun with their part of the routine. Once again, their biggest trick was their incredible spins. The couples joined up for the finish, with a fantastic move that left Jason and Cristián hoisting Kristi high into the air. Two thumbs way up for the cha cha faceoff.
Throwing it over to the judges, Len said that at his age it takes a lot to get excited, but this really got him going. He liked Cristián's hips and rhythm, saying he has all the gear at the rear. He said he felt a little sorry for Jason because Latin just isn't his thing. And of Kristi, he said that she had the style of Jason, and the hips of Cristián, the complete package.
Bruno said they all did so well. He noted how much Cristián has improved over the course of the show, saying he banged like the best. He thinks that Jason is always an imposing presence and thought he did a nice job. For Kristi, he said she is in a class of her own.
Carrie Ann thought it was interesting to see all three back to back. She thought Cristián was fantastic, but some of the movements were a little clipped. She was also sorry that Jason was stuck with Latin, but thought he pulled it off. And for Kristi, Carrie Ann said she won the faceoff hands down.
Scores:
Cristián & Cheryl: 26 (8,9,9)
Jason & Edyta: 24 (8,8,8)
Kristi & Mark: 30 (10,10,10)
All things considered, that was pretty good scoring. It's nice to see the judges play a role and not just swallow the whistle now that we are in the finals. I thought the cha chas came out in just that order, so Kristi should enjoy a small advantage heading into the freestyle form her performance. I would very much like to see the faceoff, whichever dance it takes the from of, as a regular finals tradition.
FREESTYLE
Kristi & Mark: Last week found Kristi back on top of the scoreboard. Mark thought that Jason would bring his strength to the freestyle, and Cristián would bring his personality. His strategy was to bring it all. In training we saw them practicing Kristi boosting Mark into a back-flip. For a little help, Julianne stopped by to help with the lifts. It all looked impressive in the learning of it.
They started with a cute little bit where both of them were just waking up and moved right into some funk. We keep saying it over and over, but it keeps being true, Kristi really is the most skilled dancer in the competition, and it showed as they made their way through a very difficult number. They were fast, and synchronized, and even managed to toss in a moonwalk. The lifts were big, but not completely polished. They pulled off the big back flip. A final lift found Kristi going over Mark's head, down his back, and back between his legs. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I thought they may have been a little ambitious with some of the lifts. It seemed that a couple of them actually pulled them out of the flow of the routine as they stopped to set up for the big move. Still, a very impressive freestyle.
Bruno said my god, what an inspiring fusion of mambo and hip hop. He said Kristi didn't miss a beat, and despite the difficulty, she made it look easy. Carrie Ann acknowledged that men tend to be the crowd pleasers, but not tonight, Kristi had the crowd going crazy. Len reminded us that he's not a lover of hip hop, but this held his attention from start to finish. It was quick, had great energy, and he absolutely loved it. Score: 30 (10,10,10)
Jason & Edyta: As we joined in on their training video, Jason was nervous about his height. Edyta was excited though, because she wanted to take advantage of his athleticism. For inspiration, Jason's wife and kids came in. His daughter just might be the cutest thing ever. The funny bit was the look as his wife started in on him, acting as a second coach, and he said, "Now I have two of them."
The routine got off to a big start as Jason pulled off Edyta's dress and she dove off the stage into his arms. That led to a little breaking for Jason and another huge lift. Jason really looked great here. Edyta did a good job giving him a lot to do, but not things that made him look awkward. More huge lifts followed as Jason boosted Edyta all the way over his 6'6" frame and spun around the floor. It wasn't' totally smooth getting in and out of the move, but highly impressive nonetheless. They ended with Edyta ripping Jason's shirt off, much to the delight of the women in the audience. The difficulty wasn't at the level of Kristi's freestyle, but pretty impressive all around. As evidenced by the huge crowd reaction in the studio.
Carrie Ann said that it was nice to see Edyta in the finals, and I wholeheartedly agree. She went on, who knew, Jason Taylor can get funky. She loved the lifts. Len liked the humor and the lifts and talked about going to South Beach with Jason in his speedo, and Len in his thong... Bruno said that watching them was like watching two centerfolds. It was funky, fun, and had great lifts. Score 27 (9,9,9) Did you catch Cristián popping up from the back urging everyone to vote for Jason?
Cristián & Cheryl: The challenge for the team was hiding the fact that Cristián wasn't using his left arm. Cheryl wanted to cut back on some of the tougher moves, but Cristián was determined. We even saw him take a spill on the arm. As a bit of inspiration Cheryl brought in one of her trophies.
Given the fact that she has been here before, Cristián probably had a bit of an advantage. They jumped right into a very sexy number, complete with some huge lifts. Cristián spinning around and around while holding Cheryl up with one arm was very impressive. It didn't have quite the visual impact that some of Jason's lifts had, but they were close on the difficulty. They did have a couple of slow moments tucked away in there where Cristián seemed to find himself between sections, but for the most part, another great finals routine.
Len loved the Latin American flavor. He said taking into consideration what he'd seen from the other two, the lifts weren't quite up to the standard. Bruno said he hasn't seen so much shaking since the last earthquake. He qualified his praise though, saying that for one arm, he did very well. Carrie Ann liked the performance, adding that with the freestyle they are looking for the winner. She didn't know if he beat Kristi, but when she looks at him she sees a winner for so many other reasons. I found it a bit odd that after nothing but praise for the first two couples, they seemed to take on a more negative tone with Cristián. Score 26 (9,8,9)
So, breaking out the calculator, heading into the big finale, things look like this.
Kristi & Mark: 60
Cristián & Cheryl: 52
Jason & Edyta: 51
Those totals will change tomorrow as each couple gets one last chance to impress the judges, bringing back their favorite routine of the season. Barring something catastrophic happening, Kristi should head into the final tally with a nice comfy margin. That being said, I have no idea who is going to win this. I think that huge crowd reaction from the studio audience as Jason & Edyta finished their freestyle could be very telling. They have ground to make up with the fan vote, but it's certainly not out of the question. That fan vote is just impossible to forecast.
No matter who wins, it has been one heck of a season. I'll see you all back here tomorrow for the big wrap up of season six. Until then, check out AOL's extensive Dancing With The Stars coverage, which includes photo galleries, polls, and a live chat.

If Kristi doesn't win that would be a real shame and be worse than when Sabrina Bryan was voted off the show last year. Kristi, no matter her skating background, is the most talented that is left and she is just so proficient. If someone didnt know Kristi they might think that she was the professional dancer. I really hope that she wins, if Cristian or Jason wins it just wouldn't be right.

I could not agree with you more. Kristi is the best dancer but I'm afraid that she has a lot to overcome by being a female -- no female has won since the beginning. And history has shown that the best dancer does not always win.

I love this show, its wonderful entainment. One problum the true winners should only be judged by the judges, not the people at home. They should not be allowed to continue because they have a better fan base then others. They should win because they are the best.
Like Kristi and Mark.they have been the best every week,if they dont win it would be a discrace.

I liked todays show-- loved the Cha Cha Faceoff. Here's what I haven't liked about the finals for several seasons -- the freestyle. I like the idea of the freestyle, with the lifts but why does the style of dance have to have no relation to what we've seen the last ten weeks. I actually liked Cristian's dance more cause it had more to do with the past ten weeks than the other pairs. I love Kristi and hope she wins -- but I agree the lifts did break the flow. It just seemed pure hip hop -- why not a freestyle tango, or jive. Hell I'd take some West Coast Swing. It just seems for the past several seasons the go the hip hop root-- and I'm not against hip hop in their dances, I was a fan of the Cha Cha that Len marked down due to the hip hop element.
Am I making sense, I don't know. Just my thoughts.
Just i always tend to get disappointed with the finals because of the freestyle and I want to love it

Kristi is the winner in my eyes. Yes, in some respects she has an advantage, given her experience with having to learn choreography. Ultimately, however, she has done much harder routines and she has worked hard to excel at doing them. I could fault her experience if she did the same level of choreography as the "less experienced" dancers. There would be an inherent unfairness in that. She instead set the bar higher for herself and as a result, she should win.
I like Cristian. It's great that he's persevered through his injury. The routines, however, have suffered. How many times can Cheryl leap awkwardly into his arms, wrap her legs around him and spin? If Kristi and Mark's lifts disrupted the flow of their routine, then Cristian and Cheryl's definitely had the same effect. I was glad that Len pointed out that Cristian is to be judged on the same level as the others with no special consideration for his injury. If a quarterback with a sprained ankle chooses to play in the Super Bowl, he doesn't get spotted an extra touchdown just for showing up anyway. The same should be true here.
I wasn't blown away by Jason's routine and I wanted to be. Jason's a class act but he looked awkward. I like Edyta but think she got out-choreographed. The freestyle routines too often wind up looking like alcohol-fueled nightclub mating rituals and I would include Jason and Edyta's in this category. Maybe I'm old-fashioned before my time, but that's how I feel. Sorry.
Which brings me to another pet peeve about DWTS: the tendency for the female pros to strip down more and more as the weeks go by, along with encouraging their male counterparts to do so. Maks tends to do this as well, so it's not exclusive to the female professionals, I know. It's just more prevalent with many of the females. I say, let the dancing speak for itself. Kristi and Mark kept their clothes on and were head and shoulders better than the other couples. Unfortunately, if you appreciate some modesty, you are accused of being jealous of the females who are more appropriately dressed for the bedroom. Not true. Mama just raised me right.

Great freestyle dances from all of them, but especially Kristi. If they made their top 10 dances of all time list now, her freestyle would be on there. Very difficult, and she nailed it.
With all due respect to Jason and Christian, there is no doubt who the best dancer is.

Watching the finals I was let down by how Cristian and Jason paled in comparison to past finalists who didn't win, like Mario, Mel B, and Stacy. I like Jason and I've come to like Cristian (who really turned me off at first). But they're nowhere near as good as past seasons' finalists.
Kristi will win, just like the informed viewer predicted she would when the couples were announced before the season started. Americans love their Olympic gold medal winning female figure skaters -- always have, always will, ya know?
I just hope DWTS stops inviting skaters and other quasi-dancers who have too big of an advantage over Hollywood celebrities with no formal training in dance or anything like it.

In addition to being the best dancer, Kristi has won week after week without the skimpy costumes and the vulgar dance moves. Not only is she a great dancer, she is also a good role model.

I believe what David said Kristi had to take all kinds of ballet classes to skate If you can dance on ice you can dance without skates She has an unfair advantage over al of them Of cousre she an do kicks straight and hold her legs straight along with doing lifts She had to learn them all for ice skating I beleive they need to stop having gold medal skaters on the show The yare so much fuather ahead then the dancers when the frist arrive at the show I do hope that most people realize this when they vote The other dancers have to work twice as hard as she does Leave the skaters offof the show Make it a real compition

While it's true that Kristi has had to learn choreography, so do other performers: Mel B, Sabrina, Mario (not Lopez), even Stacey....I hope you're not including Apolo in the "skaters". His sport is not at all like figure skating....it's more like a track sport. If you want the show to be interesting, it can't all be stiff white folks. Cuz that just gets painful after awhile to watch. I do love to see the progression of someone who has some talent and then the pro they dance with "coaxes" it out of them. Like when Lisa Rhinna was on. I think even Jenny Garth had that potential. Anyway, the powers that be want it to be interesting, so they're gonna pick someone who can wow us. I don't expect that's gonna change.

Kristi is the only gold medal-winning figure skater who has appeared on DWTS. Apolo Anton Ono won a gold medal in short track SPEED SKATING. No dancing, choreography, rhythm involved in speed skating.
Kristi, as a SINGLES figure skater with no partner, doesn't do lifts in her figure skating performances.
It seems easier to me, for two men who obviously were already involved in training with weights, to pick up and throw around a woman who weighs, what, 110 pounds than it is for a woman to learn to balance and be up in the air coordinating her body into position i.e. being the one who is thrown around. How hard can it be for Jason to do lifts? He pushes around 300-pound offensive linemen and slams 200-pound quarterbacks to the turf for a living.
Oh well, at least Kristi relies on what talent and experience she does have and doesn't strip down to a Victoria's Secret ensemble to steam up the screen for votes. Too bad the men couldn't keep their clothes on.

I love Kristi, and I hope she wins.
But, I do have to correct you on one issue. Kristi was a pairs skater before she became known as a singles skater. Her partner was Rudy Galindo (I believe that's the correct name), who also became a singles skater. She's also skated pairs for specials and ice shows. A quick YouTube search will produce some pretty good routines.
That being said, Jane Seymour danced ballet when she was young; most, if not all, of the singers/performers who've been on the show have had some amount of dance/choreography in their backgrounds. So, will the complainers be happy if all we have are athletes, actors, and reality show people who've never had any real exposure to performing to music?
It's good to have a range of experiences and talents. They people who are better give those who have to work harder something to aspire to. If Mario Lopez wasn't as good as he was, would Emmett have gotten as good as he did? It's something to consider.
I know I always ran faster when I was running against someone who was faster than I was.

Kristi ditched Rudy Galindo and pairs skating almost 20 years ago to focus on her singles skating. Rudy was pretty bitter about it for a long time. You're right...she has done a few exhibition pairs routines but she is still considered to be a singles skater.
Every season, one competitor is decried as having an unfair advantage. This year it was Kristi. I've never subscribed to those arguments because whoever is seen as having the advantage always raises the bar for himself or herself by performing more difficult routines. I've never understood why it is unfair to be more gifted at dancing if you are performing at a higher technical standard. If Kristi had coasted through by doing the same level of choreography as her less-skilled counterparts, then there would be some validity to the outcry. She hasn't done so and thus deserves to win.
People never consider the less obvious advantages that almost every person brings to the competition. Athletic ability, strength, flexibility, age or lack therof...Kristi is three years older than both Jason and Cristian. She's had two babies. Jason and Kristi are athletes and have had more wear and tear on their bodies than Cristian probably has. Kristi overcame physical deformities in both her feet. People could go on and on but as many have said, it comes down to who is the best dancer and for me it's Kristi, hands down.

Until the start of the current season, I thought I was simply tuning into DWTS for the ballroom dancing... Well, I was...sorta. Then I realized Maks had not returned for season 7. I've since tapered off to the point that I haven't tuned in for weeks. I did watch a couple segments of the 100th episode show, though. Guess which ones. Maks, please come back! By the way... "Brown" looks good on you.
I missed the season 6 final (schmoozing clients). Does anyone know if it's available anywhere on the Internet? I checked ABC.com, but only the current season's shows are available.

There are so many "experts" here commenting on the competitors. How about just judging who is the best dancer at the end like they did when the race car driver won, and the football player, the speed skater, etc. The modesty and good sportsmanship have won me over, not to mention the talent! Kristi, You go girl!

The final episode should have been called Commercials with the Stars. The way the judges cooed over Kristi was just low class. Let the public decide. If I hear, It is "Five years since a woman won" again, I will throw up!
I hope one of the men win!

I agree they pushed that a little over the top, but I don't blame Kristi for that. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching her this season, and I hope she wins it. I like all the finalists, but Kristi and Mark have been the most entertaining to me.
