I know, I know -- a lot of you are shrugging and saying "so?"
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that if ratings don't improve for the last place network, buzz is that The CW could actually vanish next year. Ratings in the 18-49 demographic are down 28%, and the ratings for the May sweeps are down 22%. I guess Gossip Girl just isn't enough to prop up an entire network, and they just lost Friday Night Smackdown, not to mention that Smallville, Supernatural, and Reaper are probably going into their last seasons.
This isn't a total surprise, of course. When they got rid of UPN and The WB, people didn't give much hope to this new CW network. Though I think most of the lack of enthusiasm was the awful name, the lame logo and the bad choice of color.
Maybe Hulu or AOL should start a network in its place, along with The CW's CBS and Warner Brothers. Imagine a TV network filled with reruns of classic shows and short-lived shows. Sort of a pumped up Trio. Hey, TV Land keeps getting further and further away from their original format, and they don't have the same shows in their vault as CBS and Warner Brothers do.

if there is an Actor's strike you bet the CW is cooked. The Writer's strike hurt ratings and another one will hurt even more. The CW can't afford lower ratings in any form. They need to be building their ratings. But overall Network TV ratings are bleeding and I have my doubts that the CW network will last. They have zero cushion.

Like I said in a previous post, The CW needs more variety; more shows that can connect with EVERYONE. It seems like Monday night is all about African Americans (nothing wrong with that) but maybe mix it up through the week instead of just Monday night. Tuesday Night seems to be Girls Night with Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. I don't know what even comes on Wednesday night. Thursday night is Guys and/or Sci-Fi Geek Night. Friday is wrestling. Maybe throw in a Crime Drama somewhere since all the other networks have one, and maybe cartoons on Sunday night to compete with FOX? Even get something sport related on The CW. I am just saying they need more than just the typical CW shows like Gossip Girl and Smallville. Oh and put up the shows online; last time I checked I couldn't watch reruns of Smallville, but they had reruns of Gossip Girl.

CW sucks big time. Why? Let me tell you. Digital Closed Caption doesn't meet well on ATSC.

Fox oughtta buy their decent shows and go to three hours of prime time programming.

If they did that, they'd have to be a real network and run PSAs and other such things that the big boys have to do because they program the full prime time spectrum.

What I don't see mentioned is if Warner Bros and CBS can break out of the contract with Tribune. As part of the closing of the WB (which Tribune was a part owner of), Tribune stations agreed to carry the CW for 10 years. I wonder how much it will cost them to break those agreements.

Watch the network that is responsible for killing "Veronica Mars" and "Angel"? Hmm, let me think about it, no.

I really miss TRIO. The CW has just been nothing since it was formed. I preferred the WB and UPN. I won't miss it.

Why don't the networks get together and form their own independent ratings measurement company? They could split the costs and have someone reputable and fair oversee it independently. They could collect data from all cable and sat receivers, dvrs, and internet sites. And give paper diaries to anyone who doesn't have any of those digital devices. That way everyone has a voice. The numbers that Nielsen provides are nowhere near accurate as they only sample 10,000 homes out of 100 million plus tv homes. Total viewer numbers would be higher plus the top 20 shows would have greater change from week to week, promoting less turnover of shows every year and saving the nets millions in development costs and raking in more ad money based on more total viewers.

Whoever at the WB decided to merge with UPN should be hanged. They should have just kept the WB and put some of the UPN shows. the affiliates changed, etc and ratings are half of what the WB was pulling in.

MERVE-THE-PERVE - The networks did that in Australia. AC Neilson were the official ratings company, but the networks in Australia formed their own ratings company (OzTam). However unlike ACNeilson, the OzTam only rates the people in the 5 biggest cities(they are also the only 5 cities where at least one of the networks own the local station), which they use for the whole country. They only count on what people watch live and through 1 pay TV provider (if you're with someone else.) People with OzTam boxes who watch network shows through their cable/satelite with another company don't count.
It's a joke, and the old system with AC Neilson was far better. AC Neilson still rate the whole country(I don't knwo the reason) and the ratings often differ significantly nationwide, and in the 5-markets that OzTam rate differ slightly. But the networks pay no attention to AC Neilson.

I'd hate to see The CW go, though the only thing I watch on the network is "Supernatural" - though I'd also watch "Moonlight" if they picked that up.
I think The CW's intent to go after the younger female demographic is fine, but they should go after the family demographic as well, like they did with "Gilmore Girls," "Everwood" and "7th Heaven." Families tuning in would bump their ratings. Plus, some additional scifi/fantasy programming wouldn't hurt; something more substantial than "Smallville."
Anyway, I hope the WB and CBS give it more than 3 years to flounder their way to a more sure footing. Plus, I'd like Eric Kripke to finish his 5-year "Supernatural" plan before that show goes off the air!
