(S07E40) This is it, the penultimate episode and possibly the most tense and contested results of the whole season. Based just on the comments here, fans of each contestant are passionate, so you can expect the world to erupt in chaos tonight, especially if David goes home. Syesha has been the comeback queen, but I don't know if she has what it takes to break through into the Finals, and after last night's performances I certainly don't think she did enough there. Join us here for our live chat and live out the excitement with billions (give or take billions) of other Idol fans and see who's going to vie for the title of American Idol in next week's finale! You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.
Three contestants remain which means there was a lot of vamping to be done to fill a one hour results show. Why not fill it with a former Idol winner who can show Syesha how "Fever" should be sung on that stage: Fantasia. At least the choreography for that horrible opening number was as horrible as expected. The three remaining contestants are so very different in singing style and genre that they should never really be singing together on the same song as it's just not going to work for all of them. Tonight the number went better for Syesha than the Davids. With all the potential of the Top 24, how did we end up with this Final Three? Are these the best three vocalists in the competition? I don't think so, but then this happened to us last year as well, didn't it. And this was the week we lost Melinda Doolittle, arguably the strongest vocalist of the Top 3.

Need more American Idol? Get an inside look at Season 7's contestants and think back to these scathing (and hilarious) Simon Cowell quotes.
Also: Don't forget to choose your favorite Idol!! |
The best part of this Ford commercial was how amazing Syesha looked in it. Beyond that, I can believe that Syesha dreams of gold records and David Cook of strings of guitars and cars, but does David really dream of his picture at the bottom of a pool? I doubt it.
"Bore Me (Yawn)," Fantasia
Fantasia always knew how to command the Idol stage with an infectious energy that's rarely been paralleled, save by fellow winner Taylor Hicks. I was one of those people who absolutely loved both singers for their unique voices, and Fantasia had some of the most amazing performances ever on the show. But this song was a bit strange for me. She sounded like classic Fantasia on it, but it was so frenetic throughout, it was an odd fit for the usually treacly performances that make up American Idol. I loved the cut to Simon's face, who wasn't getting it at all.
David Archuleta Goes Home
Little David was all smiles throughout his video package, I think he never stopped his awkwardly uncomfortable giggling on his entire trip home. He hit up the local news, radio and then hit the mall, declaring that he didn't think very many people would be there. I guess he's never watched the show as there's always a lot of people who show up to greet finalists, except I think for Katharine McPhee from jaded LA.
David was moved to tears by the tremendous support back home. And he said "Gosh" about a million times. It was a beautifully sincere moment for the Archuleta family and for the mayor's amazing mustache. After the video package he said "Gosh" again because we got to see him cry. Then they showed his American Idol journey so far, so I guess you can fill an hour by doing a goodbye package for all three finalists, too.
Syesha Mercado Goes Home
Syesha was all smiles and so appreciative to have made the Top 3. She hit the morning news show before heading off to sign some autographs and being moved to tears of her own when Syesha Mercado Day was declared for her home county. She was met by her entire extended family in her neighborhood for a brief visit before trekking off to her high school.
Syesha's trip didn't seem to have nearly the crowd support of David Archuleta until she came over the crowd in Sarasota by helicopter for her performance. In tears, she declared again that she was living her dream. Ryan then ran down her performances from the night before and we got her farewell package. She got Fantasia for her farewell video music, I guess because they're both black and both women. Way to put some effort into that selection, Idol.
David Cook Goes Home
Ryan revealed that at the Omaha audition, David went in having no intention of auditioning. But when cameramen were interviewing his brother, whom he was there to support, they started to interview him and essentially pushed him to audition as well. If he wins this thing, what a crazy story to tell about how he got his big break. He owes those folks something big. And his brother was a tremendous sport, brought up on stage to tell the story.
David one-upped the other contestants by giving the weather forecast during his morning news visit. Despite the weather, David was blown away to be greeted by a huge fan for his outdoor mini-concert. He then snuck to his elementary school to surprise his music teacher for inspiring him to get into music in the first place. This was done in the auditorium in front of the screaming student body; was it really a surprise? The Idol cameras tried to catch David in tears, but while overwhelmed he was able to keep things mostly under control. He even got to throw out the first pitch at a Royals game. All in all, an amazing experience for David. And he got Daughtry, another "rocker" for his farewell video proving that those folks at Idol are just that clever.
Finale Bound
Fifty-six million votes later, we're finally ready to see which of these kids is going to face off in the Idol finale next week. The writing would seem to be on the wall for Syesha, again, as the Davids seem to have been on a Finals collision course for months now. First through the gate was David Archuleta, but it was only to introduce his going home and farewell videos, which we were going to get for all three contestants. There's no reason to divide the kids up anymore. Syesha Mercado came out second to get her video treatment, followed by David Cook and his.
Rather than announce the people going home, Ryan announced the contestants heading to the finale, and it was the inevitable David v. David finale everyone's been anticipating. Syesha has nothing to be ashamed of as she did an amazing job to get this far. Had she put together a stellar Tuesday night yesterday maybe she could have gotten in to the finale, but even then it would have been a likely long shot.
My Picks
If I get it right next week, then I can wind up still just shy of .500, but I guess I'll take it. With the right pick on Syesha, I crept up to 10-12.
Your Picks
You guys kept up your strong run, picking Syesha as well elevating your total to 14-8.

How fair is it when the judges are critical of the song choice when the singers had no say-so in the choice (for instance, when the songs were picked by the judges and producers). I can understand beng critical of the singer's choice of songs. It seems like they should only be critical of the way they sang, not the choice, when they did not actually pick the song.

I agree. AI has made countless blunders this season, and in a lot of ways, it's been downright embarassing at times.
Well, at least it's almost over for this year Norma... they know they have tons to improve next year if they plan to keep return viewers. Criticism of contestants is one of the biggest things they need to work on, rather than having the judges sit and poke fun at each other for an hour. They waste too much time attempting to be funny. Hard to laugh at such disgustingly rich people.
Also, I'll miss you Syesha, but I'm sure I'll see you soon. You deserved to make it this far... love ya!

I want everyone, whether your a David A fan or David C fan to watch this video at this link. This show is so rigged it it not even funny and it is bull shit. I am an Archuleta fan, however I also think Cook can sing like crazy, however the show is rigging a cook win. How do you think this is making Cook feel? Knowing that he may not have won with ought the intervention? Did anyone else notice that he seemed very bummed out tonight? I think this is crap and the show needs to be over after this year. Anyways, please watch it.

This is no surprise, Joshua.
Simon Cowell has already admitted in the media that he would like to see David Cook win. Aside from these revelations about manipulated song choices, last minute arrangement changes, and strategic placement of songs by the producers in the the night's set that favor Cook, it's been very apparent that even Cook's stage visuals and lighting this season have been significantly enhanced above that of the other competitors.
It's a shame Syesha got the boot under these questionable circumstances. At least she sang in tune, which is something that can not be said about one of the remaining two finalists.

Hi. To Joshua who posted the almost pitiful harping by DA's voice coach. FFS, everyone has been whining on all season about how Archuleta has been pimped out time and time again. Even this week, getting plaudits where he really didn't deserve them. And now here's his voice coach whining on about how, for one show, they didn't pimp DA but pimped DC. Personally, and my opinion only, they pimped DC over DA because they categorically KNEW DA was in the final with his teeny bopper voters. They just needed to make sure that DC was his fellow finalist, to Syesha's detriment.
And for those of you who are whining about the show not being what it was; IT'S ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS! You're just getting bored of the same old, same old. Go watch something else instead of moaning on about a show that's had the same format for 7 years and isn't likely to change unless Paula goes into rehab.

It doesn't matter if the producers or judges choose the songs....the point is--you must be able to take it as a way to show America how good you really are by making the songs your own. Let's face it, Syesha was good but not outstanding with IF I AINT GOT YOU and the other songs. As a TRUE RECORDING ARTIST, you are given songs for your album and you must deliver. There's no point in whining that "The judge's pick the song!!"---because if you can't deliver it then you're not artist material.
Let Syesha go. It would be unfair for her to win anyway. would you buy her album?? Nah, I dont think so. She'll be another Taylor Hicks if that happens.

Yes, I would buy Syesha's album. I'd also watch any movie or TV show she was in and I'd see her on Broadway if given the opportunity.
I didn't like Syesha until about 4 weeks ago but I have to say she was the most improved of the whole lot. She has the whole idol package, she can sing, she can entertain and she has the look.

All I have to say after tonight's show is that I loved the My Morning jacket song used in the background of Archuleta's homecoming video.
Oh, and rock on next week, David Cook!

It should be interesting to see how next week pans out. I still think that Cook deserves the title more, but that it’ll be Archuleta walking away with it.

Am I crazy or delusional? David Cook has NO pesonality. He never smiles and looks like he's bored. His songs have no personality to them. He does have a good voice but in my opinion not even close to David Archuleta. David A seems to really sing to the audience and is full of personality.

A predictable top three elimination show is better than a predictable finale show, which is what we would've gotten if Syesha made it through since she would've surely lost to either Davids.

Syesha had the best personality, i feel like we knew her more, and she was more open. the david's seem a bit on the more too humble and "cinderelley" type, so shocked that they are super shy.

For some reason I felt the American Idol cameras were just clamorin for some tears on the homecoming trips. I loved David C's moment of tears. I can see it now
Producers: Okay David i'm gonna need some tears here
David: Ummmmm, I don't really feel like crying
Producers: Okay lets get the pepper spray in here!!!!
David: What?? Did you say pepper sp......... Ahhhhhhhh. My eyes!!!!!!!!!!!
Producers: Alright, here we go, lets get this shot, Ah yeah get those tears
David: What the hell, you guys are bastards!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I was surprised when Ryan gave credit for "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" to Chaka Khan. David Cook would have done a good job on "Killing Me Softly," too, had he sung that Tuesday night.

Is it me or has anyone else felt a disconnect with the show. It's begining to feel that the show is so over produced that I'm finding it hard to believe that they are truly looking for the next true American Idol. There was no way Syesha could have made the final two after the assault on her performances from Tuesday. I hope next season the producers make a more balanced and fair show. Manipulated reality is what we fans are having to endure. :(

Syesha did pull out all the stops and really thought she did the best last night -- but it is way too hard to overcome to fan bases of Archeleta and Cook. This is gonna be as close as Aiken and Ruben. I really don't think that Cook NEEDS the title -- he's got a career that I think will be bigger than daughtry.
they just need to release their first cds sooner.

Welcome to the Boomtown Again
I was not a big fan of Fantasia the year she won Idol. Tonight's performance reminded me of why I still feel the way I do. The song was called Bore Me! Feel free to supply your own jokes here.
Apparently, FOX will not have another search for the next great American band. This means Sheila E needs to replace Paula Abdul as soon as possible in my opinion.
I suppose this night was as inevitable as a Britney Spears fender-bender. Syesha goes home (kinda-- after all, aren't all the top 10 supposed to be on next week's finale?) I guess Syesha wasn't helped by her choice of Fever after all-- but her numbers must've been within a few million of Archie.
Yes, it could be said that Syesha was sabotaged a bit by the judges choice-- but the Davids had to tackle some tough songs as well. A few mistakes here and there and the outraged cries of a David fan might've filled the night sky with virulent rage.
David + David. Together again. (Yeah, the two guys who sang Welcome to the Boomtown were both named David. I realize only five people in North America got the reference. What's your point?)
So we have a final two for the ages. The rocker and the Osmond that Time Forgot. (Or, for those of you who read the tiny print in the sports pages-- an Osmond to be named later.)
The problem for me with Archie has always been that he peaked too soon. His version of Imagine was the best I heard from him, but that was very early in this year's competition. The majority of the rest were pretty much shrugs of the shoulders for me. Can he find his way back to when America was first floored by his talent? Or has he overstayed his welcome in the living rooms of America? I say he better bring it next week. Archie seems to have trouble with three songs a week.
Looking back over the season, I believe I had David Cook ranked near the top all year long. What has impressed me the most about him is that he has had a willingness to take risks that could have easily backfired in his face. Because of this, I really wasn't shocked that he did such a great job on the Roberta Flack song.
By the way, here's a memo to the Idol staff... Chaka Khan is not Roberta Flack.
(And thanks to Cricket, who pointed out I had the wrong name of the Aerosmith song from Armageddon. By the way, I was right. Cricket wasn't all that impressed with the song, either.)
It will be interesting, to say the least...

I am one of the five who got your Boomtown reference, but I'm one of probably millions who disagree with you about Fantasia. I might not be crazy about the song she did last night, but she was certainly a deserving Idol the year she won. That woman can sing.
