(S07E39) It only took until the Final Three, but finally the contestants are going to be able to sing at least one song that is entirely their own choice. No themes, no specific artists just whatever their little hearts content. Expect David Cook to do a rock song, Syesha to do a Whitney song and David Archuleta to do a ballad he's been singing his whole life. After that, the judges get to select a song for each and the producers get to do the same. Traditionally these Top 3 episodes have featured some pretty amazing performances, as the songs are better suited for the kind of vocalists we have left. Now, this may not be your favorite Top 3 (it's certainly not mine), but stop by anyway in our live chat during the episode and talk about how they're doing.
You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.
A high-schooler, an actress and a bartender. One of them is your next American Idol. The other two are going back to their day jobs. Who's it going to be? We have three songs each tonight to try and narrow that down. Could there be an upset in the making? Can Super-Syesha skate back once again and escape elimination or is the wall of Davids just too strong to break? My wife officially declared that Syesha's dress is too big for her, so I countered that David Cook's head is too big for him. "But she can change hers," she retorted. Point to the wife.
David Archuleta
"And So It Goes," Billy Joel (selected by Paula Abdul)
If David used a mic stand, would he be able to avoid holding out his right hand palm up at his side all the time. It would help him. I think this was a good showcase song for his vocal abilities as David has excellent vocal control and range. I like that he started a capella to really spotlight what he's capable of. But I think I'd rather he close his eyes completely than do that squinty thing of his. Ultimately, I worry that the performance, while technically very well done was pretty boring for a show opener.
Judges: Randy said the performance was dope and he was in it to win it. Paula thought it was a beautiful performance and Simon said it was good, though predictable.
"With You," Chris Brown (selected by David Archuleta)
He chose a song he hasn't performed in awhile (or a style, he wasn't clear) and wanted something more modern. This was a smart choice as it gave us a chance to see if David Archuleta could sound relevant. I can say that he doesn't move like a current pop star, and it felt like he struggled in the quicker parts of the song. But you could see in there the potential for an artist who could do well in the pop scene, so I applaud him for choosing something so current and showing us that potential.
Judges: Randy applauded as well his effort to be current as well but felt it lacked credibility (particularly with "my Boo"). Paula thought he should continue singing this type of song but needs to stop trying to make a ballad out of it with longer phrasing. Simon applauded the "not ballad"-ness of it but thought the whole thing was a bit awkward.
"Longer," Dan Fogelberg (selected by Idol producers)
This is a fantastic song and one that I wouldn't have picked as a perfect fit for David, but it is. He squinted his way through an amazing vocal rendition perched atop the stool that Ryan didn't use when he introduced David Cook last round. Well, I think tonight has proven that when it comes to sappy ballads there's almost no one better than David Archuleta, and for his age he is amazing at those, but when he steps out of that comfort zone, things are a lot less sure for him.
Judges: Randy said for the third time that David could sing the phone book (twice to David A. and once to David C. tonight) and just continued to cheerlead everything David does (I wonder if he cheers when David takes a pee break during commercials). Paula dubbed it lovely. Simon thought he sang the song well, but didn't care for the song itself and declared David would make it into the finals with his performances tonight.
Syesha Mercado
"If I Ain't Got You," Alicia Keys (selected by Randy Jackson)
Check it out, dog, a current song choice. Immediately when she started you could feel something missing. There's such a richness and passion in Keys' rendering of the lyrics, that Syesha felt kind of hollow when she started. It got better when she hit the chorus, though. She definitely is well-suited to this genre of music but I felt she could have wowed a lot more with that song than she did. Plus, there were a few sour notes sprinkled throughout.
Judges: Randy reiterated that Syesha is peaking in the competition at the right point and that she did an amazing job. Paula applauded her for tackling Alicia and said she looked great, meaning there was no direct critique of the singing. Simon said it was very good but he would have liked to see her change it up a bit more and agreed that she looked gorgeous.
"Fever," Peggy Lee (selected by Syesha Mercado)
This has been performed to great success on the Idol stage. Syesha chose to perform with a chair, making it more like a theatrical production than just a singing performance. This was an incredibly sexy performance that spotlighted her acting ability as well as her singing. I will say, though, that while fun the chair may have been unnecessary. But, if the alternative had been for her to sit on stage, her dress was way too short for that.
Judges: Randy felt she sang it very well, though it was an odd song choice. Paula was surprised by the song choice again and didn't think it showed her who Syesha was as an artist. Simon took it a bit further saying she would regret that choice as she had a great chance to be contemporary and instead was cabaret.
"Hit Me Up," Gia Farrell
After two dresses, Syesha went with a white top and tight black pants so she could get her move on. Like David Archuleta, she seemed not as confident vocally on this up-tempo piece and sprinkled it with bigger notes to make it something more like she would normally sing. But again, like him, I think with some training she could do this very well and hit a Beyonce-like niche in the industry. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if she did enough tonight to break the Davids wall, and wrapping her night on this number didn't do her any favors.
Judges: Randy called it Rihanna-esque, but just okay for him. Paula said she did the song very well, but doesn't think that's the type of song that defines her and isn't certain that can get her into the finals. Simon said it was better than her second song, but thinks she peaked last week with her Sam Cooke joint. She didn't get her defining moment.
David Cook
"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," Roberta Flack (selected by Simon Cowell)
Can I say that both David and Syesha's "impromptu" readings of their text messages was so contrived it hurt me. This one was a bigger departure from the kind of artist David has proven himself to me, so it's interesting that Simon was the only judge seeking to challenge the contestant. And by dammit if David didn't prove himself more than up to the challenge. He caressed every note throughout the performance and never kicked it too far into his "rocker" arena. But in exchange, he did drop in an ending Idol Power Note.
Judges: Randy loved the high note at the end but wished that Simon would have picked something less predictable and more "rock." Paula said he was her second favorite person to have sung the song, after Flack. Simon thought it was one of his best performances ever, and added that he took risks and made the piece original for him.
"Dare You to Move," Switchfoot (selected by David Cook)
Well, David stuck with his strong point picking a number by a rock group, and as he's done before I felt he started off a bit weak with this one. I've read in multiple places that David has a tendency to start softer and then "rock out" after a few lines, and this number followed that formula to perfection. Ultimately, it was just okay for me as he didn't do anything to impress me with it vocally and then it was just kind of over as if he stopped in the middle of his planned performance.
Judges: Randy had to namedrop a bit before throwing out his catch word: pitchy. Paula felt like he was just getting to the beginning of the song when he stopped, and she wanted more. Simon said it wasn't a very melodic choice and dubbed the middle round just okay for everyone.
"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," Aerosmith
I'm not sure what happened, but for the first time I think that this performance again started off a bit weak, but he more quickly put it together. I'm a huge fan of this song so each rearranged note really rung out to me, but I forced myself to listen to it how David was interpreting it and for what he did to it, he handled it very well, though I think he missed his final note before it's rise at the end.
Judges: For Randy it was very predictable and okay for him. Paula cheered the songwriter, Diane Warren, who was in the audience and declared David Finals-bound. Simon also liked the performance and declared David Cook the winner of the night.
Best of the Night
David Cook
Going Home
Syesha Mercado didn't do enough to break through so we're probably getting our Davids finale after all.

Who needs proof of something that is clearly true? It's a TV show, not a constitutionally protected democratic election...
David Archuleta
"And So It Goes," Billy Joel (selected by Paula Abdul)
"With You," Chris Brown (selected by David Archuleta)
"Longer," Dan Fogelberg (selected by Idol producers)
Short-hand: Boring, SCARY, Boring...
Long-hand: Okay, so he fumbled the lyrics at one point (Good spot ORKMommy! You and I couldn't have been the only ones...), his rendition of a Chris Brown was laughable, especially because he chose to do it. Simply put, he was blown away by the other two and they weren't even that good. On the last song, Randy sounded like he wanted to bash him, but then said his "Molten Lava" thing. The man simply has no credibility.
Syesha Mercado
"If I Ain't Got You," Alicia Keys (selected by Randy Jackson)
"Fever," Peggy Lee (selected by Syesha Mercado)
"Hit Me Up," Gia Farrell
Syesha is sexy. That much is true. Also, AI Producers don't want her to win, that much is clear too. From the harsh camera angles they give her (notice how they tend to focus on DA's face, DC's face, and then Syesha's backup singers?) to the clearly obvious choice by the producer to set her up to fail. It was a HORRIBLE song choice by the producers and is likely to kick her out. My girlfriend and I, however, cast our votes for her because she was clearly better than DA.
David Cook
"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," Roberta Flack (selected by Simon Cowell)
"Dare You to Move," Switchfoot (selected by David Cook)
"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," Aerosmith
His voice is pretty, but tonight was not a night where he was sounding tip-top. The producers want him to win, putting him last and closing with the "Armageddon" song made famous by Aerosmith, but he's clearly not at the top of his game anymore. I hope next week he brings it, and that he brings it against Syesha instead of David A.
On a final note, I listened to the studio version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" as sung by Jason Castro on youtube and was blown away. It was better than Dylan's, and I'm a huge Dylan fan.

All of the contestants stepped up this week and did pretty well. As usual, Randy immediately told Archuleta he was the bomb as soon as he walked on stage, but I didn't sense that they were rigging him to win this thing as much as they have in the past tonight.
They simply couldn't do it (Claim that Archuleta walks on water and turns rocks into gold) with Cook's strong performances. I hate to say it, but I guess it is time for Syesha to bow out. I can see her having a very successful career after this, doing the kinds of songs she likes, rather than Andrew Lloyd Webber or Neil Diamond bunk. I also think she deserved the top 3 spot, looking back on all those before her (Really, could you imagine Jason Castro as an American Idol... REALLY?).
So, these performances turned me around a bit tonight... I was super jaded with the show this year, and still am, but I think it's gonna be one heck of a finale this year. I'll reserve my judgment for then, but I can more or less see where it's headed.
One thing that bothers me... they waited too long to step up. They coasted through this season, you know they (Top 3) did, because of the mostly positive feedback they always received. I guess that's my main reason for being disappointed this year. No one seems delighted to be there, to have the chance to be "Idol".

David A. is just flatout boring. His interpretation of songs is to make them all the sound the same. He would turn a Black Sabbath song into a sappy ballad. How Randy can keep saying that he is the best, makes Randy look like a joke.

Did anyone else notice how David faltered on his lyrics about 1/4 of the way through the song? Am I the only person in America to notice that? How can someone in the top 3 of AI falter on notes? When Brooke and Jason did it, everyone was all over them. Now David does it during a top 3 performance and we don't hear a thing about it.
The kid is boring and needs to be done!

I think David A. had done that song before but tried to play it off like he hadn't done that style of song before. He is trying to be so careful with his words that he stumbles all over them or doesn't say anything at all. I think that is his Dad's doin'.
Syesha knew she wasn't going to win so she decided to audition for broadway. The actress made it clear that she wanted to sing and act. It was an audition for future roles.
I love David Cook but he did seem shaky at the beginning and Paula was dead on about the second song jsut getting started and then "bam" -- it stopped. He does start slow and then rock out but I think that is Idol formula. You have to end with that note, so it is a good format and works for him.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL DAVID ARCHELETA TO SING A POP SONG OR SING MICHAEL BUBLE -- the ballads are boring.
And Syesha came out the best tonight -- why did they criticize her so heavily for FEVER -- which was one of the best performances of the night -- they tell her that she's a broadway star and nothing showcased her more than that great great performance. She tries to sing Alicia or whitney --- they say she sounds too much like them -- it's a catch 22 for her where she cannot win, no matter what she sings.
I think if I had to base it on the three songs, I would say -- that Syesha was the best. The best song of the night -- David Cook's rendition of Don't want to miss a thing. Archeleta needs to step it up, he was great and deserves to be in the finals.
I also thought that the producers choices were the best -- what was Paula thinking when she had archeleta sing that song?

I was a bit disappointed as well, they are really pushing for a david-david finale. this is really obvious at the contestant's choice portion. man, david murdered chris brown's "with you", he did a very bad rendition of the song. Then comes S'yesha, she did a fantastic rendition of "Fever" - and what did we get from the judges? - Randy for sure liked it, but I dunno, the producers already whispered to them to not actually praise S'yesha. but man we are not deaf. I will go for a DAVID COOK - S'YESHA FINALE. David A, is boring.

i agree with most ppls comments, David A is BOOOORING!!!
he has a great voice, but is sooo plain, like a peanut butter sandwich. no intriguing personality, too clean, and obviously heavily controlled by his father. if this guy makes it, he'll be a junkie in 2 years tops!
so for everyones sake, i hope he doesnt go through, though that seems very unlikely.
maybe someone will shoot his dad, and he'll drop out?
let us all pray hard.

It's funny that the contestants get knocked week after week for their song choices, but the producers can't seem to do any better. Neither can Randy. Their choices (including Cook's overrated Aerosmith song) were universally bad.
With three exceptions -- Cook's Roberta Flack and Archuleta's Billy Joel and Chris Brown -- this show was totally uninspiring. I hope the finale is better.

Agreed Jimmy - Cook's Roberta Flack and Archie's Billy Joel were easily the surprise moments of the night. Nothing against Syesha's performances but she was much better the last two weeks than she was tonight. All in all, this was the best of the best performing tonight. A solid top three.
I'm in complete agreement with all the comments about this season being boring and predictable. At the beginning of the season, it looked like it would be a fantastic year with the talent pool but the producers kept giving us these lame shows instead. Syesha performing "Fever" tonight was a perfect example. I'm sure the Idols have a pool of songs they can select from and as great a song as "Fever" is, ITS BEEN DONE TO DEATH! I mean, two weeks of Beatles songs and under half of the song choices were worth listening too? I hate to admit it but I actually miss RockStar now that its been off the air a while. At least every song performed was a major hit by the original artist - Layla, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Man Who Sold The World - I could go on a LONG time...
The point is, AI is suffering from a ratings crunch and there's really no reason for it. How about a major overhaul next year?
After David Cook wins it all that is...

I was not impressed with Archuleta as you. I thought Archuleta was the least impressive tonight. It’s not that he doesn’t have a nice voice; it’s just that every song sounds the same with him. But since he’s a favorite of the judges, I’m going against my better judgment and predict that Syesha will be going home on Wednesday.

This really was David Cook's night. THe first and last songs were fantastic, while the second was forgettable. In fact, the song choices of the contestants were mostly lame.
Maybe it's because he doesn't appeal to my demographic but I just don't see what's all that great about Archuletta. Sure, he has a great voice, but he doesn't do anything original with that voice. He reminds me a lot of Taylor Hicks, and we all know what happened to him.
I thought the judges were way off base with Syesha, especially Archuletta-biased Randy. They really seemed to go out of their way to ruin any chance she has of being in the top 2. At least Syesha livened up her performances and didn't look stiff like David Cook or goofy like Archuletta. I hope some agent is taking notice of her and trying to ger the girl a gig on broadway. That's where she belongs, not dumbing herself down for American Idol's pre-teen demo.

I really didn't like Archuleta's performance of Brown's song. He stepped out of his comfort zone, which is commendable, but it didn't work at all for me.
Cook's version of "Dare You to Move" was also pretty lackluster to me. He was off-key and had a really slow start.
Overall it was a disappointing week for me. I think Cook deserves to still move, but Syesha and Archuleta didn't have any outstanding performances.

What the heck is it with David Cook that people love?! His voice is so raspy it's annoying... and really,.. he doesn't have much singing talent. He just butchers every song he sings.
David A. has a wonderful voice, but he has no stage presence. More than that, every song he sings sounds the same.
Syesha really is the whole package. I won't say she knocked it out of the park today, but she has what it takes to be the best singer/performer in the whole bunch.
