(S04E11) One of the few flashbacks of the season showed us John Locke's predestined connection to the island. Locke encountered some familiar faces before the crash, and each meeting guided him to his current situation. While Jack's mind is set on rescuing everyone on the island, Locke's focus in on saving the island itself. This episode put everyone, including the freighter folk, in place to carry out their plans. I'm already stoked for the finale.
John's flashback went as far into the past as possible, beginning with his birth. A rebellious young Emily Locke was hit by a car while running away from a fight with her mother. When she reached the hospital, Emily told the nurse that she was six months pregnant and gave birth to preemie John shortly after. Baby John survived pneumonia and other infections, and was dubbed a miracle baby by the hospital staff. Emily wanted nothing to do with her newborn son, special or not. Someone else was interested, though. Richard Alpert, eternally 40, watched baby Locke from the hallway.
Now in foster care, an older John received a visit from Richard Alpert. Alpert said he ran a special school and believed that Locke was a candidate for admission. He tested Locke by laying a series of objects before him: a book called the Book of Laws, a knife, a jar with grainy-looking contents, a comic book, a compass, and a baseball glove. Richard wanted John to pick the object that already belonged to him. When Locke chose the knife, Richard angrily said that it didn't belong to him and abruptly left.
Teenage Locke almost had another encounter with Alpert. After freeing John from his locker, a kind teacher showed Locke a pamphlet about Mittelos Laboratories Science Camp. When Locke tried to deny his interest in science, the teacher gave him a dose of reality. John wasn't going to be popular or athletic, and he should play to his strengths. Locke responded with his trademark phrase--"Don't tell me what I can't do."
Matthew Abaddon, posing as an orderly, caught up with an adult Locke in physical therapy. Locke was pessimistic about his chances of walking again, but Abaddon encouraged him to believe in miracles. A miracle happened to him when he went on a walkabout. He went in one man and came out another. Before leaving John in the elevator, he told him that he should listen to his advice and go on a walkabout. When they met again, John would owe him one.
The Freighter
The chopper made it back to the freighter, but the injured mercenary could not be saved. The ship's doctor, however, was alive and well. Keamy had bigger fish to fry, though. He wanted to know who gave Ben his name and personal history. When he discovered that Michael was the spy, Keamy beat Michael and tried to shoot him. Michael's island invincibility saved him, though; Keamy's gun wouldn't fire. Captain Gault protested when Keamy mentioned that he was going back to the island immediately and was ultimately going to torch it. The captain also learned that there was a second protocol that gave Keamy Ben's new location on the island.
Gault had a change of heart about his role in Widmore's mission and helped Desmond and Sayid get to the freighter's raft. Sayid wanted to get as many of his friends off the island as possible, and was taking the raft back to the beach. Desmond stayed behind; he'd had enough of the island and wanted to get back to Penny. Meanwhile, Frank found Michael and asked why he didn't trust him with his secret. Michael told him that Widmore was behind the 815 cover-up and begged him not to take Keamy back to the island.
As the rest of the mercenaries were loading up the chopper with weapons, Omar told the doctor about Daniel's strange Morse code message. Frank tried to refuse Keamy's order to fly the chopper, but ended up putting everyone's lives at risk. First, Keamy slit the doctor's throat to show that he was serious. He also shot and killed Captain Gault when he tried to intervene. During the confrontation, Keamy displayed something on his arm that looked like a remote for a bomb. Frank gave in, but hid a satellite phone in a satchel as they took off.
The Beach
Back at the beach, Jack ignored Juliet's orders to stay in his recovery tent. Everyone ran to beach when they heard the sound of the helicopter, and saw something fall from the sky. Jack found a bag with a satellite phone in it. The GPS tracking device was on, and Jack interpreted this a sign that they should follow the signal.
The Jungle
After making camp for the night, Locke had an enlightening dream. He still had no clue where Jacob's cabin was, but the man in his dream knew. Locke found Horace Goodspeed, Ben's old DHARMA friend, chopping down trees in the jungle. Horace was building a cabin for himself and his wife. Horace told Locke that once he found him, he would find Jacob. Jacob had been waiting for John for a long time. This vision inspired Locke to return to the DHARMA grave where Ben had left him for dead.
When they reached the pit, Locke searched the corpses and found the cabin's blueprints and a map in Horace's jumpsuit. Locke offered to let Hurley go back to the beach, but Hugo chose to stay. Ben teased Locke about manipulating Hurley into staying, but Locke said he wasn't like Ben. The two men had a discussion about their beliefs. Ben once believed that he was special, but his recent illness and Alex's death made him doubt his role on the island. He told John that there are consequences to being chosen.
Locke was the only one who wanted to enter the cabin, so Ben and Hurley stayed in the jungle. Christian Shephard was waiting for John when he came in. He was speaking on Jacob's behalf. Jack's father wasn't alone, either. Claire was sitting in a corner, all smiles. Naturally, John had tons of questions, but there was only time for one. How could he save the island? Locke returned to Ben and Hurley with the answer: he had to move the island.
Final remarks/questions:
- I know Keamy's a cold-blooded killer, but damn. That is one hot mercenary.
- Geronimo Jackson strikes again. Teen Locke had a poster for the band taped up in his locker. We saw one of their albums in the Swan station as well as in another of Locke's flashbacks.
- The Mystery Tales comic gave us some intriguing hints about the island's future. The cover read, "What was the secret of the mysterious hidden land? Does it pay to ignore the voice of warning?" The main image--a city with another city floating above it on a cloud--resembles Locke's new plan for the island. There was also a man looking out the window, terrified at the sight.
- Locke's love of backgammon goes back to his childhood. Back in the pilot, John tried to teach Walt the game.
- Why didn't Locke remember meeting Alpert as a child? I know he was young, but it was a strange moment in his life. Why did Alpert pretend not to know Locke when they met on the island?
- Michael Emerson's delivery--half bored, half annoyed--when Hurley asked Ben about shooting Locke was too perfect.
- It's strange that significant people are behind the 815ers' presence on the flight in the first place. Jack would never have been on the plane if Christian hadn't died in Australia, Claire was convinced to take the flight by the psychic Malkin, and now Locke and Abaddon. Did someone (maybe Widmore) want those specific people on Oceanic 815?
- "Destiny, John, is a fickle bitch." Best line of the episode. Ben has become a bitter man.

Mittelos is an anagram of "time lost".

And you would just be refreshing us, correct? It was more commonly referred to as "Lost Time" but either way works.

The firm that recruited Juliet in her "origin" flashback was Mittelos.

Oh, you should go back and watch the past seasons. I'm sure you're lost if you just started watching. :)

Did anyone else think the "special school" Alpert was trying to recruit Locke to was the Dharma school on the island, and "Mittelos science camp" was part of Dharma on the island as well? Or am I totally off-base?

Off base. Alpert was not part of Darhma. He was part of the "hostiles" that helped Ben kill off Darhma.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Hurley and Ben splitting a Snickers(?). That scene made me chuckle pretty good.

That moment was priceless. =D
Just take that clip out of the show and instant commerical. XD

I don't think that was a Snickers. That probably came from a Dharma food drop and was probably an Apollo bar. I think they were made to keep intact in the jungle heat.

@Imp. I think it's a possibility. It also explains some of the Others fixation with children.
The line Alpert spoke to Locke early in the episode "You have a good sense of the game" is telling. Especially in the light of last weeks episode.

Dan--That's a good point about the Others going after children off the island as well as on it. It makes me wonder what they would do if they got hold of Aaron.
On a different note, did the drawing at Locke's house (age 6) look a little like the smoke monster?

I believe it was a drawing of the smoke monster. I'm sure Locke wasn't sure of what he was drawing, but Alpert certainly took a keen interest in it.

Any thought that Alpert is also a time traveler, and that his meetings with Locke only happened AFTER the crash?
I was looking forward to an on-island Locke flashfoward. Oh well...

I was thinking the same thing too. We already know that the Island is out of time sync with the rest of the world, so it may be that those close to the Island, such as Alpert, may be able to control what point in time of the real world they appear in.

I sensed some time travel too. When Locke chose the knife I wondered if he'd traveled back and forth in time. However, then I thought that if he knew that the knife was his, he'd know who Alpert is. But, not remembering Alpert (as an adult on the island) from his childhood and choosing the knife could be an indication that the childhood stuff was happening only after he went back in time when he was already on the island.
(Then I guess child Locke would remember Alpert from the future, which is sort of what I already said.)

Christian Shephard...do you think he is just that, a Christian sheppard, leading his flock? The writers could have given him any name, yet they chose that one. And John as the chosen phrophet.

Touching on the bit about Locke denying his scientific aptitude as a teen, remember that on the island, Locke said that jack was a man of science and he was a man of faith. So, he is still denying the interest in science just as much at his current age.

This episode has seriously f'd my mind. We really can't believe anything we see on LOST.
Did Claire die?
Did Christian really die?
WTF IS UP WITH LOCKE?
Who is Locke's father?
Is the guy that got Ben on the island - Jacob?
*head explodes*
