Grey's Anatomy: The Becoming

Sara Ramirez and Eric Dane
(S04E14) "Hey, everything I did was consensual. In fact, some of 'em even begged for it." - Sloan

I'm gonna start at the end. Why? Because I loved it. More often than not Grey's Anatomy gets awfully convoluted; full of itself even. It makes me just want to yell at the TV and scream, "Get to the point already!" Then Dr. Wyatt did just that. She cut the crap! She finally came out and made an obvious statement. We don't get those too often on Grey's. It was refreshing. Makes me feel like I'm not crazy.

Meredith, on the other hand, might be. After Wyatt informed Grey that her insurance only covered 20 therapy sessions (thus prompting her candidness), she made clear what we all knew anyway: as long as Derek is with Rose, Meredith is not going to be happy (or sane for that matter). On an unrelated note, why does Meredith only get 20 sessions? You work at McDonald's, you get all the free Big Macs you want.

Back to Meredith and Derek. Beyond the fact that their clinical trial has turned into an annoying metaphor for their relationship, I'm tolerating it because we know what the outcome is going to be. For once, I feel like this is going somewhere. They've now killed five test patients in the name of science, but the second someone lives... naked time. Goodbye Rose, hello Meredith. That's what Derek wants anyway. He finally slept with Rose but could only think about Meredith. I will say that I was surprised that it took Sloan calling Rose a tease (or more specifically, terrified to "give it up") to prompt her to finally hop in the sack with Shepherd. It's really just a matter of time now before that bottle of celebratory champagne Derek bought gets popped open. The success of the clinical trial won't be all they're toasting to though.

The biggest development of the episode had to be the return of Burke... sort of. Weber posted a newspaper clipping that said Burke had won some prestigious heart surgeons award. Naturally, this sent Yang into a downward spiral. She ducked out of Hahn's service for the day, retired to the morgue to cut hearts from cadavers, and sang "Like a Virgin" over and over again. I couldn't quite decipher if her singing that particular song was somehow an homage to how Burke made her feel or if it was just meant to be ironic since she was "cutting for the very first time" into the dead bodies in the room.

Regardless, it really seemed like she had cracked. But Meredith was able to cheer her up. The one thing that surprised me? Yang is constantly bitching about how Hahn treats her. Burke's award had the power to unite them and Hahn even reached out to Yang. They could trash talk him together. She didn't bite though. I guess can understand why. It's like Yang said - she was the unseen hand to his brilliance. If not for her, Burke ain't in the paper. But was she mentioned in any of his research? Nope. Almost makes you wonder why she chooses to stay at Seattle Grace. Also, anyone else notice that Burke was referred to as an "area surgeon" in the article? Does that mean he works at another Seattle hospital? The one where Hahn used to work maybe? All I'm saying is that makes it awfully easy to bring him back for a guest stint should Washington ever heal any of his wounds with his ex-cast mates.

Moving on to the Chief. I was hoping Adele would be back at some point. Why couldn't she have just shown up at the hospital though? Making her the new union rep for SGH's nurses felt a little forced to me. She's not some unknown that needs a reason for an appearance. Anyway, I'm glad her and Richard seem to be back on track.

Sloan had some great lines in this episode, one of which I quoted at the beginning of the post. If anyone should have gotten a spin-off from Grey's, it should have been him. Anyway, ignoring the fact that he's sleeping with Callie again, it looks like he finally may have developed some self-respect. Credit Bailey's "he's a whore" speech to all of the striking nurses. Bailey made a good point: they all knew he got around, so why are they complaining?

Now speaking of Callie, she's been acting awfully awkward around Hahn ever since Addison made those lesbian remarks. Naturally, Hahn played right into it and she made all sorts of questionable remarks. Like the "it's because I don't have a penis" one. However, she actually grew into a better character in this episode if you ask me. When she came clean with Callie about having issues about making friends and how she was hurt that Callie didn't talk to her about Sloan, I actually felt bad for Hahn. She isn't exactly brimming with human emotion, so it was nice to see that side to her. That being said, she could still be gay. He reaction to Callie when she brought it up at Joe's was pretty ambiguous. So who knows. It would explain why Hahn was so disinterested in Sloan when he made a pass at her.

More thoughts and observations:

  • Hahn needs cadaver hearts for her research. I wonder what she's looking into? And is it that easy to just take all the hearts from bodies in the morgue? She told Yang there were about 50, right? Don't you need consent to take someone's heart? I mean, I assume next of kin did consent... but 50 seemed like a lot.
  • Maybe I'm mean, but I thought it was hilarious that Alex forgot about sleeping with Lexie. Speaks to her character in general. Forgettable.
  • And speaking of that other Grey girl, it seems pretty obvious that her and George are going to end up sleeping together. However, I wonder how George's new title ("George O'Malley: Intern to the Chief") will affect Lexie's standing with the other interns? If George is a brown-noser, what does that make her?
  • I remember reading somewhere that it was a big deal they were casting for two gay soldiers. Well this was it. The big deal was... ? What? The kiss? So what?
  • Again, call me mean, but I'm starting to get really annoyed with Bailey. She got mad at Weber because he assumed she couldn't possibly be having sex with someone else at the hospital. Well, yeah... I agree. Are we forgetting that her nickname is the Nazi? Plus, she's moody, condescending, and has her kid with her at all times now. I know she's going through a phase of self-doubt (especially since Tucker is already dating), but I don't think she's much of a catch.
  • Isn't disclosure of an office romance pretty standard HR procedure for most workplaces? Anyone else find it odd that SGH didn't already have this type of agreement in effect?
  • While it was great to see Alex bond with his patient's children, it just makes Ava/Rebecca's lie that much more real. She isn't having a kid and Izzie knows it. Patient confidentiality or not, I can't believe she didn't tell him the truth or even do something like leave her chart with the ultrasound results just lying around so that Karev might see it.

So what does everyone think? There's only one episode left before the two-hour finale and for the most part, I feel like we know what to expect. Derek and Meredith are going to get together, George and Lexie are probably going to get naked, and Alex is going to find out the truth about Ava/Rebecca. My point? I don't see much conflict. What's the big cliffhanger going to be? Any predictions? I just hope the finale doesn't hinge on the outcome of some bizarre case.

Who should Sloan sleep with next?
