(S04E06) "I don't want to mess with someone crazier than I am." - Matt
Welcome to week 6 of Hell's Kitchen, also known as Everybody Hates Matt. This was one episode where I didn't buy Chef Ramsay's decision at all. He had to choose between three people at the end, and the one who should have gone - clearly - didn't. The one who should have gone second? That person didn't go either. I really think this week was all about "how can we guarantee more reality show tension in the weeks to come?" and not a professional decision. And that's really disappointing to me.
This week both teams had to cook for a girl's Sweet 16 party. Both teams go to Farmers Market and have to decide which food to buy. This is a really funny sequence, if only for the fact that no one listens to a thing Matt says. First he suggests sushi for the teens, and that is laughed off (funny, I thought California girls would be hip to sushi), and when he tries to point them in the direction of a separate store at the Farmer's Market (he must say "there's a little supermarket over there" five or six times), they ignore that too. They don't like him.
They get back to Hell's Kitchen and have 45 minutes to prepare dishes. Of course, the teen girl, Melissa, is the one that will make the decision about what food she wants at the party (odd comment from Petrozza: "It's not a professionals opinion anymore" - yeah Petrozza, get used to that if you work in restaurants). Mom comes along too, and I think she'd be at home over on Bravo's Real Housewives. The teams are tied, and just when it looks like Melissa is going to pick the women's dishes, Mom pushes her into choosing the guys'. That means for the first time, the men win a challenge, and they get to go act like teens again, eating lots of desserts at Simon L.A. and riding go-karts.
Back at Hell's Kitchen, it's Francisco time! He's the rather, um, flamboyant party planner who is in charge of helping the women decorate the place for the party. Let's just say that Melissa's mom doesn't like the decoration or the colors ("I want silver, not red"). Francisco wants the place to look "sparkalicious," but Christina makes the observation that she's not really "friendalicious" with him.
If I were to tell you that a lot of the food goes out undercooked, would that surprise you? Of course not. It always goes out undercooked. Unfortunately, the victims this time are the honoree of the night, Melissa, and her picky mom. Melissa's beef is undercooked and mom's fish isn't doing too well either. Bobby manhandles Matt and takes over his station, Rosann screws up her station (again), and Ben seriously insults Shayna's avocado mango salsa, which she spent all morning chopping up. This isn't brought up to Chef Ramsay, and I bet it's because he would probably find such perfectionism endearing (more on Shayna later though).
The service is over, and while The Pink Spiders play outside for the guests, Ramsay tells the teams that once again he can't pick a losing team, because the party guests both gave high marks to both teams. Matt interrupts and says "thank you for your generosity," and Ramsay just says "fuck generosity, Matt," which I find hysterical. Matt doesn't know when to "not talk." The teams have to pick one person each. Matt is hated by everyone and goes to pack because he knows he's going, and the women can't decide between Roseann and Shayna.
The men do indeed pick Matt, and the women pick...Shayna! This is more confusing to Chef Ramsay than an episode of Lost. He tells Rosann to join the group. It's at this point that I think it's a no-brainer that Matt is going: his team hates him, he's always screwing up, and he has that really unpleasant look of constipation and sadness/anger that irritates everyone, including Ramsay.
So what does Ramsay do? He tells Matt he's safe! I think Matt actually helped himself by saying "if I stay, I'd be happy to go on the women's team." I think this could have turned the tables a bit, with Ramsay and FOX saying, "hey, that would be a neat twist!" Anyway, at this point I think that the one to pick is Roseann. It's not the first time she screwed up and won't be the last. But Ramsay picks Shayna! He tells her she has heart but she's slow. I think this is a nice way of saying what one of the women said, that she's overweight.
So, to repeat what I said at the start, I think this was more of a reality show decision than a real-life decision.
Next week: Matt gets his wish...he's joining the women! I have to admit I can't wait to see that.

I like Top Chef a lot. I think it's a different animal though.
Don't you think they both have their place?
Ramsay is looking for someone to take over cooking a certain way for him. Not looking for someone who has their own ideas on how a menu should run. All of the Top Chef contestants have a style unique to them, and have recipes they have worked on and perfected and wish to open a restaurant to express that taste. Whilst there's nothing wrong with that, Ramsay isn't looking for a Future Michelin Star winner for their menu. He's looking for someone that can run his kitchen fast, efficienty, and proffessionally, with other professionals that he, himself, has trained or recruited from other top culinary institutes around the country.
I just don't think one can compare the two...or even the value or quality of one over the other.

I think they meant Ramsay, when he took over Rosanne's station to get the girl's entree done.

I think you're right that this is "Kitchen Survivor" but I take issue with the idea that this is somehow comparable with "Top Chef." I've watched both and I like both but they're different critters.
When watching "Top Chef" I usually end up wondering if most of the dishes that they serve could be produced consistently in a large restaurant setting, and in many cases I decide that they couldn't. If there is one thing that you see on "Hell's Kitchen" and both versions of Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares" shows it is the frequent need to sacrifice artistic presentation and complexity in the name of getting a consistently good product out to the customer in a timely fashion. If I'm going to sum up about the two shows, "Top Chef" is about the 'art' of cooking, while "Hell's Kitchen" is about the business of producing food in a restaurant.

I loved the episode, but many of the points felt very fake to me. The mother and daughter seemed liked actors, and the party planner MUST be an actor.
Also, could the producers of the show told Matt to suggest a switch?
I'm glad Matt is still there, if only to make fun of him and all his poor qualities.

Is anyone else weirded out that Cory seems to think that all it takes to beat the guys is getting them to get in the hot tub with her? First it was that sexist bald guy (don't remember his name) and then tonight it was Louross...
She keeps saying that she'll 'do whatever it takes'...
I just don't get it. Does she think that any guy that flirts back with her will magically become a bad cook?

I think Shayna should have gone. She was too slow. Have you ever seen Ramsay cook? He's faster than anything. He did a Live cooking event with the whole of Britian recently, and he amazed. People, across the country, on webcams, straining to keep up. He's demanding, and if Shayna were to run his kitchen, she'd never keep up. As to the comment of being overweight, I'm sure it didn't play into his decision, but I'm equally sure it played in Cory's, who obviously is stupid on so many levels with the things she says(she's the female Josh).
Another reason to keep Matt, is that, quite honestly, he's a sous chef....so the chances of him straightening up, if he stays on the girls team, means that he has experience doing what Ramsay is looking for. That's the reason why Bobby will make it(he's an executive chef) or why Rock from last year won...these homegrown chefs can't cut it, which is why he generally targets them first.
I personally cant stand matt, but Shayna couldn't keep up...nor could Rosanne.
Oh and by the way, Bob, the men have won the opening task before. This was their second win.

Wasn't it last week's episode they were bringing someone back? I remember seeing the shadows at the door, but nothing. My DH seems to think it was putting Matt on the girls teams, but IDK. I def think Matt or Roseann should've went home this week. Matt def has that look like he's alwaying sh!tting himself. His facial expression are hilarious!

Yeah I wondered what happened to the mystery chef as well. I thought it was the cook from last year who Ramsay, paid for to go to culinary school, and said she should then come back on the show.

I think Shayna's lethargic arse should have gotten the boot too. None of the chefs seem all that great, and they would get blown out of the water by the Top Chef chefs. But I think most of them have the potential to improve their performances if they could learn to focus better and cut out stupid mistakes. Better focus isn't going to cure "slow as dirt" however. I think Ramsay made the right choice.
Best quote of the night... Ramsay to Matt: "Louross's s are bigger than yours!"

It's not that he suggested sushi, it's that he suggested the disgusting-sounding combination of a "sushi pizza on a tortilla" (shades of his "exotic tartare" signature dish - raw venison, raw scallops, raw quail egg, lime zest, caviar & white chocolate). The guy's simply a pretentious cook, favoring originality over quality.
I agree that choosing Shayna to go home was not a professional decision based on ability but a decision based on dramatics. I think at this point in the competition, Chef Ramsay had already come to the conclusion that neither Shayna, Rosann or Matt could possibly win this, so he sent the most boring one of them home first, not the least capable.
