There have been approximately 400 stories written about CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric in the past few weeks: she's thinking about leaving, she's getting her lowest ratings ever, etc, etc. And now TV viewers are weighing in on what Katie should do.
A Gallup Poll asked 1,016 adults (I'd love to hear why they come up with such numbers, why they didn't keep calling until it was 1100 or at least stop calling at 1000) what Katie should do. And you know what? 46% of respondents say she should stay as anchor of the show! Where are those viewers when she needs them?
Here are some other results from the poll:
- Katie should return to a morning show: 35%
- Katie should be on 60 Minutes full-time: 28%
- Katie should replace Larry King over on CNN: 17%
- Katie should host a daytime talk show: 8%
- Katie should open up a muffin shop in Frenso, CA: 6%
OK, I'm just kidding on that last one (though I'd rather see her do that than host a daytime talk show).
I wonder about Katie leaving. No idea on who would replace her if she left (for the record, Les Moonves is standing by her and says she's not going anywhere). I think that unless Brian Williams or Charles Gibson comes over to take over for Katie, then the CBS Evening News is always going to be in third place. And then what will the Katie-haters say when that happens?

Katie does a decent job with the evening news. When she took over, CBS was in third place and continues to be there. I don't watch the evening news much but it seems to me that the CBS news has the same problem it's always had in that it's kind of lighter, fluffy news.

not that you probably REALLY wanted to know, but I think the Gallup people were shooting for 1000 in their poll but overshot--they try to ensure a good mix of women/men, all ages, races, etc and have several people making calls. So sometimes they go over a bit to ensure they have enough of all the groups they want to poll. Also with several people making the calls sometimes it's hard to coordinate the end right at 1000.

The reason that the number of respondents is 1,016 has to do with statistics. It is probably the sample size needed to achieve a targeted margin of error given the population that they're using. An introductory college statistics class covers this sort of issue.
