I'd like to say I'm surprised by this, but I'm not. ABC has canceled Men in Trees. Despite being one of the genuinely sweet and funny comedy/dramas on the network -- one that's more rooted in reality than flights of whimsy and pretentiousness -- Men in Trees has struggled to find a home on ABC. It's been shuttled about from day to day, time slot to time slot, in and out of the line up so that it became a gypsy. How were you as a viewer to invest in the romantic adventure that Marin Frist was on in the wilds of Alaska when you weren't sure when the dang show was going to air? A failed attempt to put the show on Lifetime back in March spelled doom for the show. If there's a glass half-full way of accepting this, here it is: instead of just fading into oblivion, the creator of Men in Trees, Jenny Bicks, will be able to wrap up the storylines and give viewers closure. Michael Ausiello spoke with her and while she expressed gratitude for the fans loyalty -- and they are loyal because I've received many emails from them, too, about the fate of Trees -- she also agreed that all the time shifting by the programmers mucked up her show. "I wish the show had not been moved six times and put onto two long hiatuses. No show could survive that," she conceded.
Now that the fate has been cast, the writers will be able to pen an ending to the story, give relationship coach and writer Marin her happy ending which presumably will be with Jack, although love may not be the ultimate wrap up for this modern woman. She's writing a book about her Elmo life so perhaps that's the real happy ending -- a bestseller. And we'll also, I hope, get Annie and Patrick reunited. Maybe the hockey team will win a game, too. The remaining Men in Trees are slated for a summer run on ABC. I'll be tuned in, happy to savor the last of a series that was short, but very sweet.

Another good show murdered by a network. A show simply can't survive being yanked aound like this one was. What a pity!

I love this show and will miss it. First Las Vegas and now Men in Trees. It was like Terminator 2 when I saw Linda Hamiltons arms. I had to begin working out. Men in Trees makes me want to visit Alaska. I'll miss that show. At least we'll get an ending.

This really breaks my heart. I loved this show and the characters. It was one of my must watch shows. Though the schedule did make it hard, but if I happened to miss it, I always caught it online. I will truly miss my hour spent in Elmo each week.

I think I saw the first ten minutes of the premiere episode, but since then haven't seen it. Having said that, it doesn't take a big fan of the show (just a big fan of TV) to know that ABC definitely screwed up with this show.
But hey two years is better than 13 episodes--Firefly, Wonderfalls... BIG SIGH. Still, stay strong MiT fans. Stay strong.

At least ABC is giving us a chance to get an ending and wrap up the story lines. This show could have been a success if it had been given a proper chance. They murdered it, but it's nice that they're attempting to put it to rest properly. I hope Jenny Bicks creates another show and takes it to cable, where it'll be given a chance.

Men in Trees was doomed from from the start. ABC picked up the MiT pilot script with a hefty "penalty" because it was written by Jenny Bicks, who had penned several Sex and the City episodes. ABC was thinking MiT might be the SitC clone that they wanted-they immediately found out they were wrong and they were forced to put the series on in order not to pay Bicks. They fully expected the show to crash and burn quickly-wrong again. It attracted a small cult following and ABC pretty much had to renew it. So ABC went to Plan B: yank it around the schedule so it couldn't gain any traction and take it off the air for lengthy hiatuses.
I will say I don't think the second season was as good at the first. But the threat of the writers' strike, and then the reality of it, affected the quality of just about every scripted network show this season.
I also suspect ABC has another ulterior motive here. I won't be surprised to hear the announcement of Boston Legal's cancellation in the next couple of weeks. I also won't be shocked if the critically acclaimed Eli Stone is not picked up for another season. I think ABC wants to dump everything that's performing marginally, except for Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money.

i watched this show throughout the first fall that it was on. when it finally came back, can't remember when, i really lost interest. it's one of the very few shows that i ever gave up on. everything became predictable after awhile. i liked patrick and annie, but that's about it (and that's mostly annie).
even though i'm no longer a fan, my condolences to the fans.

This is terrible news. How awful that the network can't keep a wholesome and genuinely cute original show. Don't we have enough reality crap and crap crap on t.v. already?

One of the few shows we actually look forward to watching. Heche is terrific. Hope they find another spot for her. Just a good clean show.

Men in Trees & October Road are both good shows. Not hard to pick back up on when they do show a few episodes like LOST which has so many charaters& is so unbelievible. This writers strike has messed up tv watching big time. Dull Dull winter viewing & then they take away good shows.

So sorry to hear that this great show was cancelled. I loved Anne Heche. She made Marin such a believable character. Hope another show will come along with Anne as the star. We really enjoyed watching this one.

As a few other commenters, I loved the first season, and I still favour some of the characters, but the stories in Season 2 became overdramatic and sometimes just plain ridiculous.

I am disappointed to see yet another entertaining show taken away from us! I agree season 2 could be better but the characters are marvelous and what a great goup of actors they have gathered. New writers would bring happy faces to all us viewers that want the show to stay. Wish we could vote! Love Heche & Alaska too!

MIT was a welcome departure from the overabundance of "reality" series out there. I watched for the very reason there was nothing else like it on the air. It was not a clone and it was not a copy cat. I'm sure that was a problem from the jump for ABC. The characters were different too, funny, quirky, easy to like. The show was about people working together not tearing each other down for some prize. It was about people caring for each other inspite of their differences and their difficulties.
I can't believe Lifetime didn't think a show full of strong, smart, but very different women didn't deserve to be picked up! These women are definitely not desperate housewives, another reason I watched this show. The actors were all great as well, a great cast, who made you believe these people could really exist.
If anyone out there has Jenny Bicks' ear, tell her to try CBS. I remember they picked up JAG when NBC let it go. JAG was a hit for them for years. Keep the unique series coming Jenny. ABC y'all didn't give MIT the chance it deserved. Hopefully another network can. I just can't get enough of the funny, humorous, crazy, citizens of Elmo. Makes me want to move to Alaska and find such a town.

I just can't believe ABC has given uo on MIT. It was the best show on TV (I'm sick to death of all the reality, ugh). What a mistake on ABC's part. I hope another network picks it up and I know I'll be watching. I absolutely loved that show. It was light, funny and what I would love to be the "reality" in my life. I'll miss you Elmo!

I LOVE this show!! ABC killed it by constantly moving it around. First Las Vegas...then Men in Trees...and now Moonlight. Which one is next? I wonder if that means Jerry will go back to "ER" now?
